Doom obviously.
Halflife afterwords, this lead on to the intruduction of steam.
Console wise, halo.

Ok, I still like Half Life more, but people I work with have at least heard of the marketing juggernaut that is Halo. If I say Half life they say "how old was he?"; Goldeneye, "you're so sweet!"; Doom, "isn't that a movie with the Rock?"
well i'd say halo i mean sure it isn't revolutionary but it basically set the "formula" for modern shooterscrunchUK
No it didn't. You never played Doom or Half-Life did you?
Doom, any other answer is raw ignorance and/or fanboyism.DucksBrainsI love when people think their opinion is "right".
Goldeneye? Please fanboy. Halo was more innovative for console fps by far[QUOTE="DivergeUnify"][QUOTE="EmperorZeruel"]i will have to say goldeneye because after that game we began to see plenty of FPs on consolesmuffin200
You being for real or joking? I'm not sure?
Yeah, I came off like a jerk there. Serious, thoughWait this is a terrible poll.
So Goldeneye and Halo, but
NO Half Life?
No System Shock 2?
No Deus Ex?
No Quake?
No Tribes?
No Counter Strike?
No Medal of Honor Allied Assault?
No Wolfenstein?
No Team Fortress?
No Battlefield?
ect. ect.
These games were MUCH more important to the genre than Goldeneye and Halo
From this selection obviously Doom, the rest are like leftovers in comparison.
So what next we are going to have TIMESPLITTERS there?
*Faceplam*
I mean Halo and Goldeneye. Great games yes, most impact on the industry, NO.

Prove me wrong buddy.
WTH.. Wheres the Quake option? Quake wins hands down.

Facts are facts. If the question happened to be "What's your favorite FPS?" opinions would be valid, but that's not the case. It's like asking what platformer had the biggest impact on the industry; the correct answer is Super Mario Bros. You may like Sonic or any other platformer better, but Super Mario Bros. had the biggest impact, and there's no possible debate on that fact. The exact same thing happens with Doom and First Person Shooters. If you disagree with any of those FACTS, you are wrong and an ignorant fanboy.
Some types of games may be open for some debate, though. It's hard to say which RPG had the biggest impact. There's Final Fantasy I, but Dragon Warrior was released earlier, and a lot of PC RPGs are older than that, including text-based adventures. But when it comes to FPS and platformers, there are FACTS, and facts can't be debated.

ID stole idea's from ID, those rotters.
Quake however was the instigator of true multiplayer gaming over the web and also led the charge with regards to user made mods (including the CTF mode of play). Two, i think you would agree, pretty big issues when answering this question. I still say Doom overall though, hands down.BadgerNSW
I agree Quake did enough to warrent being on this list. I'd say it was more important than Doom if not for the fact that Doom led to Quake.
Halo invented the FPS genre and was a big influence for Valve when they were developing Half Life.
Seriously though, Doom.
Floppy_Jim
Half life came out in 98. Halo in 2001.

In my opinion, quake was still the game that had a bigger Impact despite coming after Doom, simply because of the true 3D environments and the accessible Online and mod tools. Not to mention CTF and TF mods originated as Quake mods. Quake is responsible for a lot of what FPS games are today, more so than Doom.
Doom did as a single game, but Halo as a series far surpased it.Vaan7
Do you know how many Doom games there are?

only one doom was good? wth are u talking about, doom, ultimate doom, doom 2 were all great games, doom 3 took a little side turn but it still had a doom soul within the game.
halo is just another run of the mill fps that created an international hype machine of mediocrity that noobs follow and toss off as the "greatest fps of all time" halo will and has nothing on doom at all and thats not opinion, anyone with half a brain who has lived through the doom series does and always knows that this game came first and everything after it was just a homage to doom..

I played Halo CE on PC. I thought it was a good game, SP wise, but not the "BEST EVAR!!!!!".
Console-wise, I would say Goldeneye. The influence it had on console gaming is just too big to ignore. Without it, there would've been no Perfect Dark or Halo: CE. It pretty much set the blueprint for console FPS for years to follow.
Overall, I would say either Doom or Castle Wolfenstein.
i thought Goldeneye was just a pure masterpiece. man, i wish I bought that game. i rented it so much...
bulletsword
lol you probably rented it so much you paid for it in full.
I remember I bought MK64 and Goldeneye for my first 64 games

Floppy_Jim
how does that work when half life came out years before halo?
Doom easily had the biggest impact, although Wolfenstein 3D was the very first first person shooter.-Jiggles-
Actually, no. For starters, there's Catacomb/Abyss, made by Carmack back in his SoftDisk days... and there were others.
Wolfenstein defined the genre, though.
Of those three, I'll have to go with Doom. Goldeneye might have popularized the genre on consoles, but it was already thriving. Halo was rather influential, especially on consoles, and many of it's mechanics have come to be standard.... but Doom formalized the genre in such a way that most FPS today still follow many of it's conventions.
