[QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]Halo invented the FPS genre and was a big influence for Valve when they were developing Half Life.
Seriously though, Doom.

Jesus, it can't be that hard to read sarcastic text, can it....
[QUOTE="Vaan7"][QUOTE="scottie300z"][QUOTE="Vaan7"]Doom did as a single game, but Halo as a series far surpased it.scottie300z
Do you know how many Doom games there are?
Only one of them was good, do You know which?
That's funny cause I could ask you the same thing about the halo series.
lol ouch.Though Doom1 and Doom2 were amazing.
Quite different from eachother (surprisingly), but both awesome games.
Doom 3 was a return to a style seen in Doom1, rather Doom2. Serious Sam and Painkiller were much more alike Doom2.
haze :P
lol joking CoD4 because it is so awesome8)
pizzatastesgood
CoD4 is a good game, but the only impact it had on the FPS industry is adding an extra game to an already oversaturated genre.
Doom its what essentially created so many of the formulas and designs for future shooters to come
Halo Combat Evolved it was at the time a CONSOLE FPS that stood tall and claimed itself as a equal among PC shooters(even the PC shooter got AAA scores)
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark comes in third but the impact was huge in the sense that it made shooters popular and showed the basics for analog controls for console shooters until Halo set an entirely new standard.
With that said id say Hale Life had more of an impact than Goldeneye/perfect dark and Halo.
IF i had to list shooters in terms of impact
Doom
Half Life
Halo(for consoles)
Goldeney/Perfect Dark(for consoles)
Console shooters never brought anything to the genre, but they always helped close the gap between console shooters and PC shooters.
Problem is that since Halo, nothing else has really closed the gap, if anything it has gotten bigger.
Heck no Goldeneye and PD didnt make shooters popular..... It made them popular on console for sure, but Shooters in general, Doom and the Quake series did just that.jg4xchamp

doom prob had the biggest impact
but goldeneye really took FPSs to the next level after that, and made console FPSs popular
i'm annoyed to see people voting halo as having the biggest impact .. surely just fanboys, because halo hasn't added much to the fundementals of a FPS IMO
i will have to say goldeneye because after that game we began to see plenty of FPs on consolesEmperorZeruelWithout doom, there would have been no goldeneye. Well maybe not strictly true, but most of what was in goldeneye was pioneered in doom. Goldeneye simply brought it into a new graphical era (especially for consoles) and improved on what Doom started. For that reason doom has to come first IMO. Same again with Halo, it simply added epic scale to a game for the first time and did a great job incorperating vehicles. But it essentially just did what Goldeneye did before, but better due to new better hardware.
Doom.
Really, if you say anything besides Doom here, then you are either misinformed or you are allowing your personal preferences to affect your judgement.
Here's what I think. Doom may have changed the way we play shooters on the PC. Trust me, it's a good game. It had the most innovative content of the time, and it has vastly improved over Wolfenstein 3D. It was the game that made the FPS genre popular. This has brought a new wave of shooters over time. in Goldeneye's case, this was the first shooter that actually played well on a console. Thanks to the N64's analog stick, it made controlling the camera a breeze and it made the game fun to play. Even though Doom made the genre popular, Goldeneye made tyhe genre even bigger. It has now moved to consoles and it has brought many new FPS games to consoles. Because of Goldeneye, we now have games like Halo, Perfect Dark, Turok, Call of Duty consoles, etc. So for my pick, I chose Goldeneye.blizzvalveGoldeneye didnt make the genre bigger... compared toDoom 1 and Doom 2, hell even quake.
Its control scheme did suit the n64 controller, yes, but Medal of Honour really nailed it - with its dual analouge controls - on the PS1, without having huge autoaim like Goldeneye.
Goldeneye popularised the genre on consoles only, and it was a great shooter. However Its most noteable achievement is its split screen multiplayer.
Id say Doom. I remeber playign this on my old windows 98 when i was like 6 years old :D
Other than that Halo pretty much started all these moderns though!
Well, I think Half Life has had the most impact. Half Life was the first game to offer in game scripted sequences. That's now found in not just almost every FPS, but in almost every game in any genra. For that reason, I'd give it to Half Life.
Barring Half Life, I'd give it to Golden Eye 007. It was the first FPS to actualy have mission objectives other than "reach the end of the stage." This is something that we see in pretty much any FPS now.
heck no.Id say Doom. I remeber playign this on my old windows 98 when i was like 6 years old :D

Half Life did, it marked the birth of the 'modern shooter'. Nearly every shooter since it follows in its footsteps... It was pretty much the 'second comming' to the genre, as Doom was to it initially.

agreed, i loved half life over any console shooter of that time period but doom is still no1!!
Goldeneye is what revolutioned FPS on colsoles, but Doom is what revolutionised FPS in general since it cam first. Doom is the grandfarther of FPS Goldeneye is the farther and halo is the son EmperorZeruelWhat?
Wolf is the grandad, Doom is the godfather, Half Life is the father of the modern FPS, and Goldeneye and Halo? Well on the broad spectrum of the genre, they are just siblings like most of them, though better siblings at that.
System Shock 1/2, Marathon, Dues Ex and many more, come before.....
How do you praise Goldeneye and PD for doing what they did and not Halo?doom prob had the biggest impact

Most impact on the industry. Halo. You don't hear someone mention fps without halo. Even though Doom pretty much created fps.
The fact of the matter is at the end of the day halo is a household name and doom isn't. That is true impact.

Doom isn't a household name? Maybe you should step out of your household. :|
Wolfenstien is to Goldeneye as Halo is to Doom.
In other words, Wolfenstien and GoldenEye were the first of their kind. Wolf being the first FPS game, and Goldeneye being the first good console FPS game.
However it wasnt til Doom came along till it really lit a fire under the genre and things really started jumping. In Halo's case, up until then GoldenEye was still the only good FPS game on a console. Everything else just sucked horribly. Bungie came along, actually did things right for a console shooter, which caused other game designers to take notice. So GoldenEye may have started it, but Halo was the game that pushed console gaming in a new direction.
However, lets give credit where credit is due.
Yeah Doom may have revolutionized FPS gaming as we know it, but it was Quake that took it into the 3D realm.
Half life was the game that gave us vent crawling, and instead of hunting for the red key, we had to hunt for the darkened passage through. A seemless gameplay, levels lead directly into one another with the ability to backtrack in previous areas.
Halo: Combat Evolved. Tell me a game that's been called "Doom" killer. Doom is not popular and didn't change anything. TheUtmostWhat?
Dooms popularity eclipsed any shooter up until Quake, and then Half Life :|
Doom didnt change anything? Exactly how well informed are you? :|
What did Halo do for the genre that was so groundbreaking? :|
People are going to say Wolfenstein. Yes it started it but Doom made it explode.
I just have to squeeze this in though. Why is it that NO FREAKKING game follows Goldeneye and Perfect Dark trails? Levels with plenty of different in-missions? The only game on the market openly influenced by Goldeneye would have to be No One Lives Forever 2 which reminds me a whole lot the game except with humor and a bit more stealth.
I'm too tired to spellcheck.
Doom easily had the biggest impact, although Wolfenstein 3D was the very first first person shooter.-Jiggles-
What? Wolfenstein 3D wasn't even iD's first FPS game, let alone the very first FPS game.
No wolfenstein 3D (inventor) ? no Half Life (perfector) ? No Doom II (MP) ?
I hate to say this but this poll is ****
R4gn4r0k
Wolfenstein 3D did not Invent the genre, HL did not perfect it and Doom 2 was hardly known as a MP experience. But I agree... this poll makes little sense without Doom or Quake on the list. its really subjective between those two simply because of what they offered the end user and how what was offered is still such a large part of the genre today.
