Alan Wake did have fun combat. Finished AW+American Nightmare like two weeks ago. But it was a little bit too simple in terms of variety. But never got tired of getting that slow-mo dodge, or lighting up a group of monsters with a flare gun :P!
Best combat for me is Arkham City's though. That stuff is just addictive. Super fun, feels great "in your thumbs", a good level of strategy (if you're going for high scores there are a lot to think about to build the combo meter, while simultaniously getting variety bonuses and then get some high scores finisher towards the end. Calculator is a must :)! All while considering risk/reward), it looks superb, fantastic pacing: intense beatdowns mixed with slow knife dodge etc. Best gameplay achievement this gen imo.

Dat flare, best grenade alternative this gen.Arkham City
Anyone that thinks the Batman games have good combat is a moron.

Dat flare, best grenade alternative this gen. Not gonna argue with that! I hope they make a proper sequel next gen. The real game was mindblowingly good in many ways. A real pageturner. One of the few games lately I literaly just couldn't stop playing. But American Nightmare was just such a huge let down :(.Alan Wake did have fun combat. I'm going to play American Nightmare right after finishing the original.Well, it's open to interpretation so yeah quake live works.I'm gonna go with Quake Live. Not really sure if you meant combat like that though.

That's really simplistic. Certainly not the best. Dark Souls has good combat, The Witcher 2 also had good combat.Mario. Gotta stick with the classics. Plus it's simple and easy. Jump, fireball, twirl. Can't beat it.

I prefer dogfights. Any flight sim from the last 10 years will do:
IL2: Cliffs of Dover (and my sig too).
Is CoD still a buggy mess or is it playable at this point?MirkoS77
It's playable. It was patched by the time I bought it lthough it's still a hog when maxed out. There is still some poor terminology such as using the word afterburner instead of turbocharger/supecharger or Emergency War Power. Otherwise, it seems okay. I haven't really tried the campaign. I'm satisfied with just a quick mission or free flight.
Ninja Gaiden combat is just the pinnacle in a non fighting game. Precise, fast and very lethal. Every weapon is just so well realised and have their use in certain situations.
Sword Swipe, sword upper, air slashes followed by Izuna drop...... Euphoria.
Hm... as far as pure satisfaction I might say Madworld. That, and No More Heroes. The games are so ridiculously and unnecassarily bloody and over the top.... and they're awesome because of that.
As far as pure fun goes, I might have to say Red Steel 2. The controls worked great, and it made the game so much better than it should have been. Killing the guys was so much fun, I think it might be the most pure fun I've ever had with an action game. The mix of gunplay and swordplay was genius.
[QUOTE="Heirren"]I like Uncharted 3. It mixes gunplay with hand to hand, very well. Halo is great as well. ...Viewtiful Joe from last gen also deserves to be mentioned.Blabadon>Uncharted 3 >Anything with its hand-to-hand combat being good Lololol
Have you played Viewtiful Joe? Easily one of the best games of last generation.
Batman combat isn't that good. It's just okay.
Devil may Cry 3 probably has some of the best combat out there. I'm also fond to the combat in Tales of Grace f. Vanquish combat is pretty good out of other third person shooters. Doom and TF2 for fps maybe. Just random games I can think of. >.>
I like how Chaz did it so I will do the same,
Non turn based: Quake Live
Turn Based: XCOM: Ufo Defense
[QUOTE="charizard1605"]Turn Based: Pokemon Non Turn Based: God of War Only correct answers, IMO.GreySeal9
Really?
God of War's combat is pretty shallow as far as hack and slash games go and tho I love the Pokemon games and think they are some of the best RPGS out there, I think most RPGs with a decent battle system has a better battle system than Pokemon. I mean, it only has four moves. Compare that to something like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, which give you a myriad of options, and it comes across as unreasonably limited. The saving grace is that Pokemon lets you have so many potential party members.
Combat in Final Fantasy VI
Spam the attack spell/special move that does the highest numbers or spam the attack command until foe dies, heal when necessary. Someone dies? No worries, just cast full life on him. Out of mp? Just cast osmose.
Combat in Pokemon
Spam attack skills in PvE, predict foes in PvP. In PvP 1 mistake can cost you the entire fight. Dont forget that htere are both indirect and direct ways to take out foes, stealth rock, sandstorm, weather, mirror coat/counter, status ailments and probably a bunch more that I missed. Furthermore, some skills synergize really well.
Combat in FF6 and CT is shallow compared to combat in pokemon. Combat in pokemon is shallow compared to Guild Wars. Guild Wars is shallow compared to Magic the Gathering.
How come no one is mentioning Final Fantasy 13? I mean Auto Attack is the best combat system I have ever seen.
Ninja Gaiden was probably the best one from the ones I´ve played,DMC3 is also good but not quite as good and Ninja Gaiden.Nanomage

Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2. Only right answers. NG 3 doesn't exist.
Icarian
Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 have the most satisfying combat of any series I've played. Demon's Souls' combat is tight as a drum. Both Arkham games have fun combat. I agree about Alan Wake's combat, light 'em, shoot 'em, escape, repeat. Check out AW American Nightmare if you haven't already, great little game.getyeryayasout

I really hope that game lives up to the dev. There has been a major void in my gaming routine without new Itagaki developed NGs. I need that precision in my life!
