Anyone that thinks the Batman games have good combat is a moron.
Snugenz
It's as deep as a puddle but it is fun.
Anyway, obligatory mentions of NG and Bayonetta, Demon's/Dark Souls, JC2's combat can be fun as hell also Monster Hunter Tri.
I don't think Batman's combat can be considered shallow to any extent. It's simple in execution, but that's different than having no depth. There is much to be found while utilizing all the gadgets (I'm really thinking of AC here, with AA I can concede the combat being fairly shallow), and that depth is required to get anywhere near the high-scores on the leader-boards. There are different enemy types which different techniques have to be utilized to get around. There's explosive gel, the grappling hook, ice grenade, electric shock, cape/bat stun, take and beat-downs, weapons and shields disarms (only with Batman though). You have to also know how to prioritize enemies based on threat and location, save your combos until needed, all the while keeping up an unbreakable flow. Believe me, to become proficient at it requires skill, and skill demands depth.
I find AC's combat to be anything but shallow. The only thing Batman does differently is it abitrarily uses contextual combat animations to give the impression of the Batman's combat style and prowess fighting numerous enemies at once. I think any other combat system would be extremely cumbersome and overly complex. How the heck could they make a system with right punch, left punch, right kick, left kick etc. taking into account Batman's fighting style? Do people really expect Virtua Fighter here? Countering is simple as is attacking, they have to be, but again, that's not an indication of no depth. Positioning, timing, gadgets and tactics are where it's at. I mean really, saying (AC's) combat is shallow is like saying chess is shallow because you simply move pieces around a board. That's not the point, the point resides in which pieces are chosen and utilized at what time. Rocksteady did a magnificent job given what was required, and I don't see how they could have done it any other way. It frustrates me to see people downplay Batman's combat as simplistic and shallow, and it gives me the impression that they didn't take the time nor effort to explore it fully and/or get good at it.
