[QUOTE="The_RedLion"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"] WarCraft III plays nothing like StarCraft aside from the fact that it's an RTS. Same with StarCraft II. The only people who say otherwise really don't understand how those games work.DarkLink77
i've played almost 50 hours of the three of them, and they're are more similar than they're different, so I think I'm right.

If you've played for more than 50 hours, you should know better. WarCraft III and StarCraft are completely different in terms of play style. StarCraft II is more subtle, but the switch from soft counters to hard counters really changed the game, plus faction abilities, etc.

they still follow the exact same core design

Nah. WarCraft III is all about small battles and managing your heroes, whereas StarCraft is about big battles. WarCraft penalizes you for having a large force. And again, hard counters versus soft counters. Big difference.

ask any cod fan about cod being the same and you'll get answers like that. ask a detractor and you'll get that they're exactly the same what's a big difference varies depending on who you ask, and to me the difference sc to wc3 to sc2 isn't big at all

That's completely uncalled for. This generation alone they've produced 3 AAAE (Subsistence, Portable Ops and Peace Walker) and 1 AAAAE (MGS4) and have Rising on the way and Metal Gear collection on the way, both will most likely be AAA :D

The only thing that is overrated in this world is the word overrated itself. Even my least favorite developer Bioware is not overrated. Bioware gets a lot of hate these days anyway, so I dont see how they can be overrated.

also nintendo: same three games over 20 years blizzard: sc1 recycled over and over againThe_RedLion

So F-Zero, Mario, Wii Sports, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Mario Kart, Pikmin, Ice Climbers, Wave Race, Donkey Kong, Flipnote Studios and a whole lot of other games=3 games? That is not even including the innovation seen in the various series mentioned above.

I didnt know that StarCraft, Warcraft 3, WoW and Diablo 2 had similar gameplay. StarCrat 2 and Warcraft 3 play very different despite both being in the same genre.

Ohhhh, I thought we were talking about overrated as in... praised too much by its fans/followers. In which case, Nintendo takes the cake. Zelda: OOT a 10? SMG 2 a 10? SMG1 a 9.5? loled.

But why are so many saying Blizzard then? Diablo 2 got 8.2 or something which is disgusting for a game with one of the best multiplayers of all time.

Yet all of those 3 are leagues better than Metal Gear Solid 4 with its awful stealth mechanics, terribly told plot and weak gunplay. Dont get me started on some of the (very awkward) cutscenes.

And yet MGS4 has the best voice acting in any video game, the aforementioned Nintendo games have none at all. (lol'd at Mario voice) And the best soundtracks... And yes, it has some awkward cutscenes but it also has the best cutscenes found anywhere outside of hollywood. The plot was told perfectly and reviewers agree with that fact. Weak gunplay? It played like a third person shooter, just like Gears (just less clunky) or Uncharted (just less monkey like). Awful stealth mechanics? I'm sorry no, but they worked flawlessly and were many of unique and creative ways of getting around this (MK II/III, Octocamo or barrel for instance) You can't give a game a 10 just because its fun to play. Metal Gear Solid 4 also has the greatest storyline in any video game, you forget to mention that.

I don't know, some of the voicework didn't really seem to sync with the cutscenes, particularly in those horrible melodramatic scenes where Naomi suddenly announces she has cancer and becomes an hero and Otacon cries and brays like a little girl. You never get a sense of the emotion jutting out of the characters, transcending the restrictions of video games and achieving what makes critically acclaimed Hollywood movies so great. The best voice acting was on the part of David Hayter, who really managed to make Snake (who up till this point had seemed a near-2D stoic hero with no real depth) a dying old man you can really sympathize with. The script is also terribly redundant, particularly at the end: Big Boss repeats over and over how the Patriots failed to respect the will of the Boss, how Zero is the cause of all the evil, how Snake should live his life left in peace; what could have been a five-minute cameo became a twenty-five minute redundant, rambling monologue. Not to mention it's poor storytelling to place the key plot twists and story revelations literally at the last minute of the game rather than develop them at the climax. I also hate how every explanation for everything in the game is nanomachines. It's silly and awfully repetitive--Vamp is immortal because of them, Naomi's cancer is suppressed because of them, Meryl's Rat Patrol team can "see through each other's eyes" because of them--I'm all for wild and interesting technologies being introduced to game's world, but I'd like that they actually make some sense. Other than that, the gameplay is pretty solid and the stealth can be very fun. It's a great game, to be sure, but I found MGS3 and MGS1 a whole lot better. Both those games seem to have the most believable plots of the bunch, and the best character development out of all the games.

  • Lack of VA is a design choice, nothing else. Though, David Hayter did a darn good job with Snake.
  • I disagree with Soundtracks, none in MGS4 were particulary memorable. Outside of this, I cant really say I found any of the MGS soundtracks particulary memorable.
  • I disagree, the cutscenes in MGS4 are generally poorly written and just dont feel very well executed at all. Though there were a few good scenes, but those did not make up for the majority of cutscenes in the game. This is one of hte worst cutscenes I have ever seen,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R61cCBUWNQM
  • Stealth is inferior to what the thief games did over a decade ago.
  • MGS4 does not have the best storyline ever, that honor goes to Planescape: Torment, then there are titles like The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango and Deus Ex. Even on consoles there are titles like Wind Waker, Seisen no Keifu and Shadow of the Colossus.

What makes me sad is this...

Getting a 9.5. MGS3 on the PS2 had better animations.

And don't get me started on the mindless uninspired scenarios where nothing makes scence, random builds and boxes that really don't make any sence, what are they for, i mean honestly?

Repectiveness gameplay is also on the dish, along with kiddy weapons design and sound effects.

Kane04

Didn't understand a word of that.

and you didn't notice the animations? i guess some people miss a lot and turn a bilnd eye, you didnt used a counter argument or try to disprove me, you're not right just because you think you are.

Hey man, that's a guy in multiplayer. The map is Boneyard and the Core container is right there. It might have been the Pillar of Autumn level if it hadn't been for that.

So... the old Crash Bandicoot games were overrated? Jak & Daxter too? Not really.

The only overated game they made was Uncharted 2. That game does not deserve a 96/100 Metacrtic score.

But that one game alone shouldn't make Naughty Dog an overrated dev.

I dont think anyones saying that ND's games are overrated, but that the company itself is overrated these days, as far as popular opinion goes atleast.

Most overrated developer is either Peter Molineux or Hideo Kojima.

I'm leaning towards Molyneux because he hasn't made a decent game since Black and White.

Looking through this topic again, I think it's safe to assume that most people don't know what "overrated" means....

SquirrelTamer

Then what's your definition of overrated?

Mine is a game developer that everybody loves to death for some reason with incredible scores on all of their games (and maybe used to be great) but in reality just isn't that great anymore.

Developers like Rockstar and Blizzard fit that bill wonderfully.

nintendo even more. I see much more rockstar bashing(although relatively deserved) than nintendo bashing

how is nitnendo or rockstar overrated?

So Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy don't score high? Nintendo is a perfect example. Super mario galaxy is like one of the highest rated games ever.

Nintendo makes some good games but they make some really lame ones too. That's why I feel that they're overrated. Some people act like they can do no wrong. I actually like some of Nintendo's first party devs more than Nintendo themselves(for instance, Retro and Gamefreak are in my favorite dev list)

Exactly my point. People only see the good they have done and put the up on a throne. But there is a lot of s*** piled underneath that throne too

thats every dev but consistency nintnedo is at the top theres no denying that

Nintendo, Naughty Dog, Bethesda, Platinum Games, Crytek and Insomniac.

GD1551

This is probably the only credible post. I think people here all mentioned a big name developer just because they didn't like a certain game that came out of them. But Insomniac is the answer or reply that I was waiting for in this thread. A truly overrated developer. Why? Ratchet and Clank games are milked to death yet no one will come out and say that but point the finger and Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed as being milked. Secondly, Resistance 1 still stands one of the most overrated games of all time.. It only got the credit it did because it was the only decent game that came out for the PS3 when none was to be found. Thirdly, Resistance 2 sucked just as bad, and Resistance 3 was the only good game they made but it received ho-hum reception.

My second pick is easily Platinum Games. Sure, they made good games but no where near the admiration and hype that they get. Most people I find that love the games that come from PG, are usually the ones that are extremely biase towards other games, especially in reviewing them.

The reasons you gave for both developers are exactly why I put them on my list.

im waiting for him to answer the other three since im starting to believe people dont know what overrated is.

You could pretty much call any developer overated.....as long as they have some popularity.

I would say Rockstar, there games just aren't that fun I mean GTAIV wasn't nearly as good as San Andreas. I guess Blizzard too people are still hyped from them because of Diablo 2 and Starcraft....

Also I don't think Nintendo is overated they still make fun games (a lot of the games i've enjoyed most this gen are from them) not all there games get perfect scores either.

How is R* overrated? They make different kinds of games and excel in all of them.LOXO7

They're too popular with the mainstream to hold much street cred with the "edgy" kids around here. Even though games like RDR are comfortably amongst the best games this generation.

My choice would be Nintendo. Nothing they can do can be wrong in some people's eyes. Just because people grew up with them. Some of their franchises haven't progressed since the SNES days.

The so-called "overrated" developers are great developers and they've given me a lot of games I enjoyed. So,for me,there are no overrated developers.
Good and bad developers is more like it.

Or *gasp* they actually don't like the games. I didn't like RDR, and thought GTA4 was ok. Or am I not entitled to that opinion?

Blizzard for me. WoW is by far the worst game I've ever played. I thought Diablo was fun, but I never really saw why it was the best action RPG... the game gets really reptitive quick. Still need to beat Diablo 2 as a matter of fact, but I just can't force myself through that damn isometric point-and-click style gameplay.

Never played Starcraft or Warcraft... so maybe the redeem them for that.

You're entitled to think anything you like, as long as you understand that it isn't prevalent and you're basically the odd man out.

GTA IV was one of my favorite games of all time and RDR was friggin awesome.

I also think the hatorade is laced with a fair amount of hyperbole.

You may think IV wasn't as good SA or III, but it wasn't "not fun", it was simply a different game and you liked the other one better.

I thought IV was incredible, but needed more "open world" features and jobs.

Also the "friend dates" stuff was goddamn annoying, and the parlor games (darts, bowling, golf, etc) were garbage.

The base game (the story) basically rocked and I spent hundreds of hours driving around Liberty City listening to the radio with a big goofy smile on my face.
