I mean, I liked them and all, but this is SW and so we go by GS scores.

8.5

9.0

Really, they're good games, but why are they constantly referred to as if they got a 10? I've heard multiple times that ME2 should get GOTY, or is even GOTG.

Did I miss something? Did GS screw up their reviews? I'd like to know the general consensus on how good SW considers these games. Vote or be shot.

It's a AAA series on PC. Fantastic scores, and a fantastic story. Now, personal opinions on the game doesn't depend upon GS or other site's scores.

Edit: Lulz, I meant to press 9.5 and pressed 9 :P

GOTY + GOTG, as I have said many times.

A game's scores, and the game's most vocal opinion, aren't always in the same boat. Good example? Halo and MW2. If all you based opinion about it on was what you read online, they'd be terrible. That being said, the point is I guess, a score doesn't dictate how people other than the reviewer felt about the game.

I loved them. My only problem with them is that I was never able to get myself to do a second play through.

you are giving reviewers too much significance, and Mass Effect 2 has a 96 on metacritic if we mean to go by scores, which is close enough to a 10.

I rated the first a 9 and the second a 9.5. They are just absolutely wonderful games that pulled me in and would not let go.

Fixed.

9 for both ME and ME2 from me.

ME got repetitive fast with the "charm/intimadate or shoot" model applied to every single occasion and the Mako was painfully boring, ME2 has completely screwed up the clas.ses and the powers and an intro skip would be very welcome.

I've played all the way through ME1. It was a decent game but nothing out of the ordinary really showed itself to me.

I'd give it an 8.5/10

I haven't played ME2 yet, I might when it becomes really cheap through a steam sale or something.

Hello

Head_of_games

Because when games like MGS4 or GTA 4 get 10s and Mass Effect (which is superior to both games) gets less than 10s, people tend to view them more highly? common knowledge... remarkable what an opinion can do

I don't really know. The characters in the original were pretty bland outside of Saren and maybe Wrex. The gunplay/jedi mind tricks are not satisfying at all, moving around the field feels wooden and clunky. Choice and consequence aren't as well done as in The Witcher. Only a few missions within the games are all that memorable or fun to play though. Story wise it's pretty alright though.

In short, I love Mass Effect. However, it is important to note that it was the characters that ultimately made the game as popular as it is. I daresay that Mass Effect features one of the most memorable video game characters of all time.

They're great games, and while I played the AAA versions on the PC, I do agree it's slightly overrated - especially the second game. I really enjoyed ME2, but it's not worthy of the 'GOTY', 'GOTG' remarks that get thrown its way.

I'd say this is one of those times GS hit the nail on head.

I really think people are so desperate to have a real story in their games that they will accept sub-par gameplay.

I haven't played ME2, but I'm about halfway through ME1 and it really hasn't hooked me yet. The plot is lame; what really stands out is the above-average dialogue and great voice acting. But the combat, level-ups, and inventory really don't excite me. So far I'd probably give it an 8 or 8.5 just because of how well it builds a cohesive world with these great alien races in it (if you ignore the somewhat obnoxious fancrufty reason for the Asari being all-female and actually pay attention to Liara's explanation without fapping inordinately, it's pretty cool). The turians are epic.

But nothing else outside of the interactions have wowed me. I just can't get into it for some reason, which makes me sad, because this is my favourite genre (sci-fi!) and it would seem like, to pardon the stupid phrase, a dream come true. But it's just another video game.

A good video game, but still a video game.

Meh. Objectively, there are games with better gameplay, better sidequests, less tech issues, and a better story that doesn't end in you killing a space Terminator. I mean, you can claim opinion, and that's fine. If you like Avatar better than Citizen Kane, that's fine, too. But, objectively, Citizen Kane is the better film.

Nope. Bad sidequests, mediocre gameplay and a fairly poor narrative, especially compared to other RPGs, do not make the best "package" this gen. For one thing, it doesn't have mutiplayer. Not a necessity, but that's not a very complete package if you ask me.

Agreed. I liked ME 1 a lot, but ME2 was simply an amazing experience! Its one of those games you have to sit and play for a while, to really get into it to understand why it deserves it's reputation as a superb title.

I thought the 9 was on the money for both Mass Effect and the second one. Planet Scanning and bugs that can force a restart on the mission are what prevented ME2 from getting a 10.

Both games felt far too linear to me. Most of the "choices" you make don't really have any sort of affect on the game. Choosing to do something the good way or the bad way doesn't actually change the outcome. Not to mention Mass Effect 2 was incredibly light on the RPG elements. Its to the point where I would go as far as to consider it more of an Action TPS.

People can criticize Mass Effect 2 for many things: streamlined/stipped gameplay, lack of RPG elements, side quests, scanning, etc, but poor narrative, that's definitely stretching an obvious hatred for the game or bioware or both.

I wouldn't say the game has bad narrative, but I'd definitely say it has too much. Although I don't want to calculate it exactly, but there should always be at least a certain ratio of Gameplay to non-gameplay. ME is more on the MGS4 side of this ratio, and that's not good.
