Regarding the reviews, I disagreed with VanOrd's score for the first, though he does have valid complaints (the Mako, and the bugginess overall) but during my first playthrough, those things didn't bother me at all. They were so miniscule in the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't knock off 1.5 points.
Then Mass Effect 2 came along, and that crapped all over Mass Effect. Sure they removed most of the RPG elements (if not all), but that's not ME2's weakness. If anything, it makes it a different, and IMO more enjoyable experience. I love KoTOR, I love Dragon Age, and I like finding loot in Mass Effect, but having to deal with item management was more trouble than it was worth. Too many times I want to press on with the story (Mass Effect's greatest strength) then I'd be caught at the inventory menu comparing items, trying to deal them out to my crew members, making sure I'm not selling or destroying the wrong item. In terms of pace, Kotor and Dragon Age are much slower than Mass Effect. There's more downtime, to just talk to your crew and take a break and do some sidequests. ME1 sidequests are garbage, doable, but garbage. The fantastic main story makes up for that, in my eyes. Even moreso in Mass Effect 2, where stuff just keeps happening.
I like RPGs just fine, but I think what made Mass Effect 1 for me was the setting, the writing, and the character interaction. When I came away from watching my very first ME E3 clip with Shepard in the bar, I got really excited for the game. Yeah, KoTOR had talk options, but having a fully-voiced player character sweetens the experience.
So that being said, in terms of GS scores, there is no way Mass Effect 2 is just .5 higher than ME1. I wouldn't give ME2 a perfect, but as an improvement over the first in every way, it deserves more recognition.

[QUOTE="godzillavskong"] I was the exact opposite. I was excited for Dragon Age after playing ME2, then feeling let down after finally getting my copy of Dragon Age. While Dragon Age seemed to have much more RPG elements, it seemed a lot less polished then ME. Maybe ME was Bioware's golden horse if you will, but I felt ME was leaps above Dragon Age.Also, in terms of graphics, Dragon Age looked last gen compared to ME2.jg4xchamp
I don't know why people seem to like Mass Effect 2 ,but hate Dragon Age. I loved Dragon Age and played through the game at least four times. I could only manage to struggle through Mass Effect 2 once despite having multiple saves from the original. The graphics on the PC version of Dragon Age were fine for an RPG,so I am beginning to think this concensus is coming from people who played the console versions.
Mass Effect 2 was painfully linear imo.
I played it on PC. My biggest dislikes were the aesthetic and game world(incredibly generic from top to bottom) But what kills it for me is the combat/level design combo. Mostly the level design. It is forrest after dungeon after mine after forrest after tower of battle after battle after battle after battle after battle after battle. With so many stupid combat scenarios(like archers lined up perfectly in a row), and just lacked in any serious variation. It's a more pure RPG than ME2, and I'll admit to just not being a fan of pause and play combat(as I find it sinfully easy), but the game when it's not throwing it's narrative/presentation in your face is just utterly boring. I only finished it because Bioware's writing is as usual good enough to get me to the end. Plus Shale and Morrigan were chill.I just thought since Bioware made ME2 look so wonderful on the 360 what happened to Dragon Age? godzillavskongDragon Age has much bigger battles than Mass Effect 2. Sometimes there's 20 or more enemies on the screen.

Hmm, well I know Bioware developed both titles, but I wonder if they had the same engineers actually working on both?Dragon Age does have a lot more enemies on the screen at times, but ME2 has some large detailed environments, which are amazing in scope, and seems to have little to no slow-down during heavy action sequences. I guess I just enjoy more action oriented RPGs, vs more story driven ones.
honestly im not a fan of wrpgs except oblivion but me looks avg to me ill check it out in jan for ps3 but it didnt even get a 9.5 but Uncharted 2 did jus saying it needs to step its game up its slipping right now prob why it went multi plat people should stop lying to themselves just be real its avg game nothing morecoltgamesI liked it more than Uncharted 2, and they both have an average review score of 96 on metacritic. Its hardly average.
ME2 is clearly underated here on GS. I see the game this year that recieved the same scores as ME2 or higher and it's make me sad.
.
One of the problens with GS score policy besides the fact that it doesn't exist is that they praize a 10 much more them one should.
A 9 is pretty realistic. The game isn't 10 material. It has to be compared to other games in the genre, and it's less in depth than a lot of them.ME2 is clearly underated here on GS. I see the game this year that recieved the same scores as ME2 or higher and it's make me sad.

I love the Mass Effect series and I'm ok with the scores. I don't think it's perfect but it's my favorite series of this gen. I love the setting, the music and the combat (in both games). It has some great characters and the story isn't mindnumbingly stupid. It's my favorite genre done in an old school type of style.
Did I say it wasn't perfect? I lied.

Yes. It is perfect in my eyes also. One of my favorite titles I have played. From the more action-oriented theme, to the amazing graphics, story, and sound, this one was epic. The second game has short and weak side-quests. They really don't feel engaging either.[QUOTE="heretrix"]

Perfect game isn't perfect. But when you look closely enough, no game ever is.
It was perfect for me. Do I think it deserves a 10? Hell no. But I've been playing it since it came out in January and I still play it regularly. I didn't mean it literally.Wow I haven't heard the whole "This is GS and we go by GS scores" for a while now, good to see someone bringing back the dumbest argument in SW history.
First off we all have opinions, and my opinion, as well as the general opinion, is that ME2 is an amazing game. It's currently my GOTG, tied with Super Mario Galaxy 2, Demon's Souls, and Starcraft II.
Second, on Metacritic it has a 96, putting in the elite league of games scoring above a 95, along with both SMGs, GTAIV (although I think we all disagree), Uncharted 2, Bioshock, Half-Life 2, Twilight Princess (GC version), and Resident Evil 4. So it's one of the highest rated games there. I'm sure most of GS' staff likes it more than a 9.0 rating indicates, just one employee wasn't completely blown away. So what?
Because GS scores are only the final decider when people agree with them.
I would of given 1 a 9.5 and 2 a 9.
There both good games, but no where near as good as everyone makes them up to be. ME1 is like a 7 to me, the story was not that good and the combat can get annoying at times, but it was still good. ME2 is like a 8, it was better but i just felt something was missing.

So it's metaphoricaly perfect? What does that mean? :PI loved them. My only problem with them is that I was never able to get myself to do a second play through. Iantheone
I agree when it comes to me1. I literally just finished a second playthrough of it last night and I was just itching to finish it. Between the bugs and repetition, its a hard bone to swallow. I had to do it though for me2. Also, I'd say both scores on both platforms are right on the money.
The mass effect series made me play a game for 11hrs straight the 1st time this ever happened to me and well i guess u could say i lost my virginity from the awesomeness and epicness of the last stage and cutscene of ME2 so much o i still get the same thrill every time i play it

He makes it sound like he made love to his 360... Oh god.
They're great games, I prefered ME1 - ME2 felt less of an RPG - but both worthy of AAA.
Biggest problem with them I had is that they felt too similar and at the same time totally inferior to KOTOR.
