Their some of my favourite games this gen.

Nope. Bad sidequests, mediocre gameplay and a fairly poor narrative, especially compared to other RPGs, do not make the best "package" this gen. For one thing, it doesn't have mutiplayer. Not a necessity, but that's not a very complete package if you ask me.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"]
[QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"] I don't think so. As a package ME2 is the best game this gen.tempest91
People can criticize Mass Effect 2 for many things: streamlined/stipped gameplay, lack of RPG elements, side quests, scanning, etc, but poor narrative, that's definitely stretching an obvious hatred for the game or bioware or both.
The narrative is not that great, sorry. The characters are good. The game has a phenomenal cast, but the overall story is lacking. ME blows it away in that regard. The overarching narrative with the Collectors falls flat. I don't hate the game. I enjoyed it while I played it. I like BioWare games. It just has flaws, and I'm going to call them when I see them.I'd give the original a 9.5 and the sequel an 8.5. Both are great games, but the original actually felt more like a sequel than the sequel did. The sequel polished a lot of pre-existing features but it added next nothing while taking away the main RPG components of the original.

It might be "lacking" compared to a few other games, but I really can't buy poor. But, that's what opinions are for I guess.

Perhaps I overstated it. It's not poor, and that is a little unfair. However, I did find it to be unsatisfying, especially considering the conclusion. Its a very fantastic game, but it suffers a few flaws that keep it from a 9.5 for me. The combat is much mroe fluid and AI is better, but the cover system is stickier and simpler than most you see today (except Mafia II), it also takes away a lot of RPG for the sake of TPS. I also think it could have done with a few more plot threads and instead of taking the lazy route of removing the Mako, ME2 should have improved on it.
great games... loved ME1 on 360, great game... currently playing ME2 on PC and so far its amazing :)
I am unsure about ME2 due to the fact i havent played it. Tho i felt ME1 was a lackluster attempt at a futuristic D&D game Neverwinters Nights 2 is superior. I have Mass Effect on the PC and the Elevators uninteresting and bland environments coupled with boring dialogue drove me to boredom. I can see a highish score for Mass Effect being deserved but it just did not float my boat and 8.5 was generous considering the technical difficulty's the game had on the 360.
1.) The universe / lore created by Bioware is interesting and captivating.
2.) The writing and characters are superb.
3.) It used to be a PC/360 game.
4.) It's now on PS3.
5.) You can have sex with aliens.

It's my favourite game this gen because I got the most enjoyment out of it, nothing is going to change how I feel about it. It's my opinion, not hard to accept.[QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"] Meh. Objectively, there are games with better gameplay, better sidequests, less tech issues, and a better story that doesn't end in you killing a space Terminator. I mean, you can claim opinion, and that's fine. I mean, if you like Avatar better than Citizen Kane, that's fine. But, objectively, Citizen Kane is the better film.DarkLink77
Because they are awesome games. Gamespot rated both games below what most reviewers rated them, and way below what I would rate them. I preferred ME2 because the leaps forward in gameplay more than made up for the removal of some of the more tedious RPG elements.
Well most people are intelligent enough to know that GS and other site's reviews are just opinions, and for the most part wrong opinions. I'd personally give ME a 9.5, and ME2 a 10.0. I don't really care what GS rated them as, especially since GS gave GTA4 a 10, and at the most it deserved an 8.0.
ME2 is the only game I can remember in a long time playing through as many times as I have. On last count 5 times and on the 6th play though trying to finish on insanity level. Most games now are not worth a second play though let alone a third, or fourth.
The games also appeal to a wide range of players, my wife, and daughter have both played both games through multiple times. I can't think of any other game I own that they have done that on, except Dragon Age.
ME2 is the perfect blend of RPG, Action Adventure, and TPS. ME does the same things, but with more story, and more RPG elements.
I was excited for it after playing Dragon Age, but I felt it was highly overrated. ME > ME2 for me.TheRaptureI was the exact opposite. I was excited for Dragon Age after playing ME2, then feeling let down after finally getting my copy of Dragon Age. While Dragon Age seemed to have much more RPG elements, it seemed a lot less polished then ME. Maybe ME was Bioware's golden horse if you will, but I felt ME was leaps above Dragon Age.Also, in terms of graphics, Dragon Age looked last gen compared to ME2.

I don't know why people seem to like Mass Effect 2 ,but hate Dragon Age. I loved Dragon Age and played through the game at least four times. I could only manage to struggle through Mass Effect 2 once despite having multiple saves from the original. The graphics on the PC version of Dragon Age were fine for an RPG,so I am beginning to think this concensus is coming from people who played the console versions.
Mass Effect 2 was painfully linear imo.
[QUOTE="Parasomniac"]I give them 8.5 because I judge them as RPGs.UnknownSniper65

Barely. They basically turned all the leveling options from the first game into upgrades that you have to planet scan for.I was the exact opposite. I played it on PC. My biggest dislikes were the aesthetic and game world(incredibly generic from top to bottom) But what kills it for me is the combat/level design combo. Mostly the level design. It is forrest after dungeon after mine after forrest after tower of battle after battle after battle after battle after battle after battle. With so many stupid combat scenarios(like archers lined up perfectly in a row), and just lacked in any serious variation. It's a more pure RPG than ME2, and I'll admit to just not being a fan of pause and play combat(as I find it sinfully easy), but the game when it's not throwing it's narrative/presentation in your face is just utterly boring. I only finished it because Bioware's writing is as usual good enough to get me to the end. Plus Shale and Morrigan were chill.[QUOTE="UnknownSniper65"][QUOTE="Parasomniac"]I give them 8.5 because I judge them as RPGs.Parasomniac

Gah... planet scanning is AWFUL.TBH I can see why it would be praised alot but ME2 was a real letdown IMO. The game felt too shooter focused and they bogged down all the RPG gameplay elements to basically nothing. Most of the choices in the game don't even matter except for the last few...
