KOTOR was a landmark game that allowed WRPGs to breakthrough in the console market. Yes its better than FFX and DQVIIItexasgoldrush

I strongly disagree good sir. You might have enjoyed it more but that certainly doesn't make it so for everyone else.

I enjoyed KOTOR as well, but the characters were not as interesting as they were in the games I mentioned.

I find KOTOR slightly overrated and helped by its liscence, but it was the breakthrough console RPG and it had its merits.

And as far as I´ve heard,it was widely considered the best console RPG ever made. Even today I hear such things.

Dude now you're making me sad thinking about how great the old days of RPGs were. :(

Last gen was king for good jrpgs. But the .hack games were crap, animal, crap I tell you!

I would argue the PS1 era was better. Im a huge Chrono Cross fanboy though :P

And the SNES era was even better. Actually WRPGs were better in the PS1 era as well, Baldurs Gate series, Fallout series, M&M VI, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, and more.

its one of them, but FFVI and Chrono Trigger are also considered the top console RPGs.

And if the critics reviews are factored, it would be Mass Effect 2.

Sad part is FFVI and Chrono Trigger had better story telling than JRPG since basically back then. Other than graphics JRPG has gone ass backwards. All you need is a J-Pop haircut and a tacky n flashy combat system to please the genre lovers now.

Seriously, mechanically FFVI and Chrono Trigger are two of the most evolved JRPGs. They actually let you role play and affect the ending and the story in general.
For example, I can beat the game with Chrono dead and not revive him. The ending reflects this. Celes can either save or lose Cid, its up to the player. Losing Shadow on the Floating Island affects who I rescue in the Cave of Veldt. I can also not even recruit Terra altering the ending somewhat. Chrono Trigger had more than 10 endings depending on when I kill Lavos. I also had to choose between breaking Frog's curse or Magus.
JRPGs have regressed (the success of FFVII cemented this regression) since then, despite some what should have been evolutionary JRPGs in Suikoden II, which had a few game altering choices, and the highly underrated "JRPG/WRPG hybrid" Legend of Mana. JRPGs still continously railroad players, and one of the reasons why WRPGs have overtaken them is they do it far less and when they do have to be linear, they offer alternate outcomes. They use the freedom the medium allows while JRPG developers continously restrict themselves.

I think it'll be a few more years before JRPGs live up to the legacy they've created. (Final Fantasy 1-10, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Persona 3, Persona 4 and so on). I think the new Persona game will do just that :D.

I've heard good thing about Persona...guess those might not "count" at this gen though? Lost Odyssey was really good too. Old School? Yeh, still a lot of fun though. I liked the little "position players on the battlefield" mechanic. The Thousand Years of Dreams stories were awesome as well. Hard game though, towards the end, or maybe i just didn't know what i was doing.

Either that, or I grinded like hell because the final boss was a piece of cake. The Ancient Ruins, however, do not get me started.
