Why couldn't Sony have made the PS3 bluray player a peripheral add-on?

Nobody cares about disk swapping.

Bluray movies are nice, but why not sell that component separately?

The mistake Sony made was not to cater to the core gamer first.

When you think long and hard about it, you don't really need a bluray player to enjoy this...

People arent even gonna be complaining about bluray in another 2 years

Without the Bluray player, Playstation 3 would have cost around about $350.

The HD-DVD add on is failing/not doing too good, the same could happen to a BR add on.tegovoltio

I can't believe people are defending Sony milking them.

Imagine if you had to buy a Sony Digital Camera with every Playstation 2, ramping the cost up to $600. You would be pissed.

Well even thoug PS3 sold less those are BR players selling at the same time, and no, PS3 wouldn't cost 350 without BR, it would cost somewhat less or around the Elite.

They would have sold more INITIAL  PS3's that's probably a given, but they hope to edge out the competition over time.
The other thing is DEV's wouldn't have used it much as an addon.

FInally, Sony wanted an edge in the Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD war.

Gamers suffered, but HD Movie watchers got more support....in the end, with Blu-ray coming out on top (That's what the sales point to anyways, but that's Sony's vision.)

True but PS3 costs around 800, Sony wouldn't be taking that much loss without it since they seem to belive BR is the way.

Also you say ppl are letting them get milked but seriously are Sony the only ones? What about ppl who like BR? Certainly many ppl don't care paying 250 for the Wii which you are paying way more than what you are getting, same for the Elite HDD.

I'm Not defending them, I said Gamers Suffered.

I'm a gamer, I just happen to be a High Tech HDTV guy also, way before this gen, back in the PS2/Xbox/GC days. I wanted a next gen movie player, I just didn't want it at the expense of my other love....Gaming.

Anyways, I don't like what Sony Did, however I did like that the PS3 was only $600 for a Blu-Ray player.

It's a Minus and a Plus.

I do know it was expected of Sony, since they always lead the way with a new format for all their systems...especially the CONSOLES.

Yes, they do cost way more than that, read my post, PS3 doesn't cost Sony 600.

The price reduction comes from overhead on games. They would still have been able to bring the cost of the Playstation 3 to about $300 if they had discluded the Bluray.

So you honestly belive that? You think BR is the only thing that pushes PS3s Price? Look at the elite, PS3 has the 60 HDD also the HDMI. If anything without BR PS3 would cost somewhat a bit less than the Elite.

By making me buy peripherals for HD movies, Wi-fi, HDD, XBL, charging me for repairs on my guaranteed-to-eventually-die 360, charging $60 for online-only games, forcing me to buy their OS to play any game released in the coming years? I like the Wii, and I'm glad Nintendo managed to keep the price reasonable. 

If price was no object I would still rather play Metroid than Resistance.

This isn't milking. The HD-DVD addon is milking, the Elite is milking, selling the Nunchuck and Wiimote separately is milking,  the HDD for the PS2 is milking. All the versions on the GBA is milking.

Bluray is the very definition of milking. It's an additional mandatory component that you do not need to play games.
