He could play both. It's just that he also enjoys certain games which happen to be exclusive to a system. Thus owning that system.

TheMoreYouOwn

I see, although I don't understand how a bunch of exclusives can determine the purchase of a system, especailly when they got no replayability

Exclusives are the driving element behind gaming systems. Been that way since the late 70's and early 80's. Atari, Colecovision fighing over the Pac-Mans and Donkey Kong's of the gaming industry. This isn't anything new. Not sure how you can say no re-playability either. (I'm assuming you have a PS3 so you can validate that statement)

I'm sure there are games worth replayin on the ps3, too, but surely they don't fall under the name of: Metal Gear Solid 4 God of War 3 Heavy Rain which happen to also be the games I played and finished

basically because they're masochist or don't give much value to money at all..

Heirren

That is in no way true. A big part of why consoles are so popular is because of the age demographic and convenience. Around the time of the nes/snes/genesis is really when games began to become engulfed in our culture. It was this generation of gamers that supported the industry and continued to do so into adulthood. Now that these gamers are much older, priorities change. And, while they still may enjoy the occasional videogame, it is nowhere near a priority. Simple tasks on the pc, which aren't even complicated, become a "eh, why bother" as your prime focus is on more important aspects in your life.

I was being ironic

What a coincidence....I've played through MGS4 twice, GoW3 like...I don't know...5 times? And am actually on my 3rd playthrough of Heavy Rain. Personal preferences are quite the thing, huh?

Price. For me to get a great PC started up, I'd need at least US$3500,00 (I don't live in the U.S., don't rush me like a moron saying that I'm exagerating), while I can easily import a console for ~US$450,00. Other than that, PC's get outdated after a while -- consoles don't. They end abruptly, and you'll know when it's time to get a new one -- when the next generation comes out.

But I really do dislike not having a service like Steam. If my current videogames ever break, I'm probably going to sell all my games, scrap the hardware (You can actually get US$500,00 for a console with RROD, here) and use that money with a bit of my own to make a good PC.

I highly doubt that building a good PC would cost that much anywhere unless you live on the moon.

Not as intimidating that's why!! Until i built my custom rig by hand just to play PC games i thought the latter.. I thought switching to a k/m, getting scared of potential bugs would be a problem. Its really all in your head pc gaming is just like console gaming except your given more options on every game weather its mods or graphical tweaks etc.. So don't be scared console gamers. In the end, your playing videogames which is what your already doing.

Brazil. But when I say a good PC, I mean a PC better than any you'll ever see (certainly better than anything in the topics concerning PC setups). You can get a PC strong enough to run Crysis on high quality for US$1800,00, maybe. The problem I'd have with building a computer like that is that, although cheaper and good, it'd become invalid before the more expensive one.

Do you really want me to name them all? Not sure where you're going with this to be quite honest. It's perplexing how playing a game multiple times is out of the norm.

I built a full PC over 3 years ago (incl. monitor, Windows license and everything) for less than that and it ran Crysis just fine. Is it really that expensive to get parts in Brazil?

I bought a budget PC back in 2007 and it still plays just about every game on high or max at 1680x1050.

Brazil prices are high but not that high.

You can always find sites that ship to your area.

Also you can use websites like this to ship to your area.

The min. tax for importing items that the country already produces (albeit not with as high a performance) is 60%, with a few exceptions. It's probably more for PC hardware, since Brazil's been taking some steps in national production. Add that to having to import the items, and you have a high price tag.

You want to have a solid idea of how anything imported is expensive here? My mother bought my a copy of AC: Brotherhood, for Xmas, and that game is selling for US$125,00 here (same as Black Ops). I've seen games that are more than a couple years old selling for US$150,00 (last time I saw this was a copy of Mirror's Edge -- isn't that a 2008 game?!).

@Hakkai: I'd still need to pay the tax if I bought something online and had it shipped over. If I ever decide to build a PC, I'll most likely buy it from our equivalent of eBay -- not used, of course. A lot of people import things from Paraguai or bring that kind of stuff when they travel to Europe or the U.S.

so, in brief, a computer for you would cost more than all 3 consoles put together?

People complain about games for consoles not being backwards compatable then people act like its not a big deal then they act like it does matter..THIS is the one thing PC has over consoles. PC is a better deal just for the fact that you can play 30 year old games on a new pc. That is the best part of PCgaming to me. AND im a console gamer to the core.

Everytime I buy a console game these days...All I think of is...man, I wont be able to play this game in 20 years if my current system breaks down OR if the nextgen consoles are not bc..AND yes it does matter to me..IF a game is good...Its good no matter the age.

THIS is one reason im going to sink MOST of my gaming money into pc from this point on. Im just tired of being ripped off and feeling underwhelmed these days..

THIS however is jmho..

Out of the box, consoles are easier to set up and provide enjoyment equivalent to that found on the PC. Any compromises in resolution or even control scheme are balanced by convenience and ease-of-use.

At the end of the day, it's going to boil down to preference.

No consoles do not provide experience equivalent to PC. Someone who doesn't own a PC might say that though.

Is setting up a console really easier than setting up a pre-built PC though? All you really have to do is unpack the PC, hook up monitor, m+kb, plug in ethernet cable, download Steam, and go! You don't even have to ever leave your house again, and you have virtually every PC game ever made at your fingertips, provided that you have a credit card.

Problems like this are the #1 reason I never jumped fully into PCgaming. BUT after going through 2 360s and one being repaired 5x its almost equal these days..Seems everything has problems cause nobody takes pride in craftsmanship these days..SAD really.

Im building a new pc and rather I play pc games fully on it or not..im going to enjoy getting out from under this hunk of junk ive had for 5 or so years..

Support what, DRM? No..It can be annoying to legit consumers and it doesn't stop piracy. But it's not really a problem. Same thing happened to me, i contacted EA and they gave me another code for Mirrors Edge.

I always buy the pc version and if it is on steam the price is also much lower most times. However if I was a kid with no money then chances are console gaming would be my only option from daddy.

Actually, most parents I know prefer the pc format for their children. PCs are useful tools, and even in playing games they are still learning something.

Console-only gamers are generally younger so they don't have the exposure to the inner workings of Windows.

Having to handle drivers, Service programs, Task Manager, can seem a bit overwhelming.

I could see that for a young child - there is some good educational software out there, but maintaining a gaming PC for a child is a lot of work and difficult to control. For a kid older than 9 or so, purchasing a Wii and putting in some simple parental controls is probably a much easier proposition that requires less supervision.

Well, I gamed a lot on the PC when I was younger, but my parents never kept an up to date PC.

I did play lots of educational games, and flash games (I used to love Neopets), and when I was 10 I discovered Half Life  lol

Of course there were a few games here, and there that weren't a part of those groups. I remember playing the first Rayman on my computer when I was young, and also Roller Coaster Tycoon sometime later.

Nowadays it seems there's way way more for kids than when I was younger. There's a lot of free to play online games, and cheap software in all the stores I go to.

I did always have a Nintendo growing up as well, but I don't think it'd be a stretch to think a PC isn't a suitable system for a kid to use :)

I hear you. I mean, all PCs (even the low-end ones you pick up in Best Buy) are capable of running quite a bit of software, and then there's online games too. I run Diablo 2 on an Eee PC that I certainly had no intention of actually using for gaming when I bought it. So a PC is always a viable gaming system in some capacity.

But if I were making a choice between maintaining an actual mid-end gaming PC, or picking up a console for a child, I'd probably choose the latter in the heartbeat. First, for a feeling of relative control over what games he or she could access; second, the ease of setup; and third, the potential of bringing the entire family in on some games.

Anyway, everything on SW is somehow turned into an either-or situation - despite the fact that pretty much everyone here owns a console or handheld for whatever reason, even the PC gamers. There's room enough for multiple gaming systems out there and multiple preferences. :)

I always buy the pc version and if it is on steam the price is also much lower most times. However if I was a kid with no money then chances are console gaming would be my only option from daddy.

Actually, most parents I know prefer the pc format for their children. PCs are useful tools, and even in playing games they are still learning something.

I could see that for a young child - there is some good educational software out there, but maintaining a gaming PC for a child is a lot of work and difficult to control. For a kid older than 9 or so, purchasing a Wii and putting in some simple parental controls is probably a much easier proposition that requires less supervision.

That's probably true but hard to understand for those of us born in the 80s. We (some of us) practically grew up with PCs and as such passed the complicated barrier before we even understood there was one. I was probably below 10 when first exposed to computers and back then there were no GUIs. It may be easier for the parents but the children should understand just find.

I have kids and they have consoles they know better than to touch daddy's pc. I let them use my ex-wife's pc and it blue screened in about 1 week and had to be wiped.

They don't. PC gaming is the largest gaming market in the world. And considering most console features from previous console gens are basically non-existent on modern consoles, I don't see how there are any advantages to playing on a console over a PC... especially when you can hook a PC up to that giant TV and get a better experience (with any gamepad you want).

Why do I prefer gaming on my PC when I have a perfectly good HD TV, consoles and couch right behind me? It's called preference.

Consoles are pre-assembled devices that are marketed. If there were a device that were 5 times more efficient than a refrigerator while also having all kinds of other useful functions but required some rudimentary assembly and knowledge to function, people would still prefer their 'fridges' because it's what they know---it's what's in stores, what their friends and families use, and what the TV is telling them about.

Console gamers are mainly poor and come from uneducated backgrounds, so yes PC is to complicated for them. Easy as that. Everyconsole gamer would choose my gaming rig over a **** cheap console IF they had the choice. But luckely they don't, will keep the retards out of PC gaming.

Your source for that income and education data? And no, I'd still take a PS3 or 360 over whatever PC you have.

Cause it is easy. When you're not used to using a computer for anything more then facebook, then installing games becomes a hassle. Just think about all the things you've actually have to take into consideration compared to consoles. You have to make sure your pc is able to run it, many don't know what their hardware is, what drive to install it, patching, cd-key's, etc. And for us who have grown up with gaming on pc or at least have used a computer a lot, this is instinct. For others it isn't. And compared to just popping in the game disc into your console, it is like performing brain surgery. Its no "just" installing the game to people who have no experience with these things.
