Why do PC gamers rarely hype things?

No seriously. 90% of the Hype Threads started over here are started by console gamers. Why is that?

Because PC gamers realize that hype only sets a person up for disappointment.

Consoles are reliant on constant shinies, every game is out for a few months and then forgotten forever. Only the occasional game comes out anymore that gets played and replayed on consoles.

The structure of PC games allows for games to last ages and be played for ages so it's easy to alleviate anticipation for upcoming titles.

For example, Guild Wars 2 is my most hyped game, probably ever, but I can easily pass the time with WoW or LoL or WiC. Right now I'm replaying Baldur's Gate 2 all the way through again which is a colossal time sink. Or other people who still play CS after all these years.

But then maybe that's just me.

More popular PC games have hype threads just like console exclusives. Last year i remember Witcher 2, Shogun 2, Starcraft 2, SWTOR, Red Orchestra 2 off the top of my head having hype threads

Hype is bs.

Remember the new Medal of Honor in 2010? I had friends pumped about that game for weeks based solely upon a cinematical trailer. Then they all couldn't stop talking about how much they hated it for days after it released. I ended up buying it for $10 and for that price it was decent, but I feel sorry for people who actually give into this consumer crap.

They can control themselves / they have nothing to hype.

It maybe due to age and demographics. I would like to know the age and demographic (nationality, education, occupation, income level, etc.) differences between console and PC gamers if there is a connection between hype and age/demographics.mario-galaxys

PC got three AAe games today alone. The real reason is that there are simply too many games coming out for PC, if a hype thread was created for each one this forum would be spammed. That isn't a problem for consoles, however.

We don't hype pc games as much because we know they're going to be spectacular and we don't need to shout it off the rooftops to feel more secure about it. Having said that, I've never been more hyped for a game than I am for Diablo 3 :P

I used to hype stuff when I was a kid. Now? I usually wait until the game is either:

1. Reviewed by magazines or gaming sites.

or

2. User reviews start trickling in.

I already have a substantial backlog of games to worry too much about games not released yet.

On topic, I believe its just because there isn't as many high profile exclusives as all the consoles put together. Not saying there isn't great pc-centic titles, but the precentage of high profile, hyed games like WoW, Diablo, Starcraft,etc. Isn't as high as the amount of console centric games.

Hype is created with marketing BS. On PC there are few companies that can feed hermits, unlike consoles where they get it from the big three almost daily.

PC only has a few big franchises worth hyping. Most are made by Blizz and Valve.

Alot of the A-AAEs are really obscure titles only a few people know (which IMO, makes a hype thread even more relevant).

Because many PC games are indie titles and lower budgeted, riskier titles, so if they hype, say, "Jason Jackson's Fish Simulator 5000" nobody knows what GS will think of it. If a game sounds amazing to a PC gamer, it could be really niche and bomb with certain critics. In some cases the game might genuinely be bad despite developer promises just because its so damn unpolished or something.

Really, the PC is a risky platform when it comes to the games, and there are a lot of bad games with the good so that is my theory.

Of course if a game is a major, AAA budget title like Diablo 3, The Witcher 2 or Starcraft then they'll still hype the hell out of it.

Its not low, but it does remind me that Tribes was hyped, wasn't it? And it flopped, not a bad game, but it got lower then predicted.

So yeah, PC gamers hype like anyone else here, people just don't want to make a hype thread for every unproven indie title that comes along unless it looks good.

one cant really hype their games when they have a 90% piracy rate, are drowning in facebook and f2p games, and have to spend 800 or so to acquire a worthwhile computer...and why hype something that the majority wont be paying for?
