because they are awesome quality titles maybe? i've been playing cod since cod2 anyway, i'm not going to stop now. people have different tastes, quit acting like yours is somehow better than anyone elses kid. personally i think gta, halflife2, bioshock, and the like are overrated garbage but i don't feel the need to make a thread about it.

cod as a whole is good stupid fun where you can hop on and play a few matches in 20 mins, ain't a damn thing wrong with that.

@DocSanchez: Don't mean you personally, just in general. There's a lot that gets said here on SW that is stupid and hyperbolic, even by me, that would never be uttered IRL. You shouldn't take stuff like "dudebro" personally.

You guys are going to be so upset if they make anymore COD games. You'll be on suicide watch and will claim you are going to quit gaming all together! No actually you guys love it and will use the fact to circle jerk each other reaffirming your fantastic taste in games and laughing at the poor uneducated unwashed masses. This is actually truly pitiful as we are, in fact, discussing Video GAMES! Like it or don't! It does not matter and is not worth discussing at such length as we so often do! This is completely lost on you isn't it? Your insecurities are transparent. Quit embarrassing yourselves!

This is of course directed to no one in particular but you know who you are.

@Bigboi500: I wouldn't take it personally, because I don't play the games constituted as dudebro. But some people need to step outside themselves and look at how their behaviour makes them appear. People will ultimately play what they want and that's fine. Even my pals who exclusively play Cod and FIFA instead of Civilization or Metal Slug.

I mean, does anybody think they care? Or that Activision cares that they are rolling in the money from these people? Box them off, they are in their own separate little segment of the market.

"Oh look at these dudebros and their casual COD, if I can stop laughing at them for 5 minutes I'll get back to Yarn Yoshi for the hardcore gamers." I mean come on.

The whole Counter Strike isn't being released yearly defense is shit. Mainly because there are obviously gamers that wish for a yearly release. And they have done nothing wrong with that. Get off your high horses.

and let people play as they wish especially if your wishes don't fall in with them. GROW UP>

Because they like them. Who gives a shit?

And what the hell is new about annual releases? Madden has been coming out every year since '89, I doubt the majority of this board was even fucking alive back then.

Also, not everyone is some devout gaming fanatic. Some people just like to jump into a quick game of Madden or a quick map of CoD.

Don't see what's wrong with that.

People do have other shit to do besides just play videogames.

They are not allowed to Servomaster! You just wander in here with this simpleton logic of yours. Haven't you gotten the memo? All true hardcore gamers of great taste hate COD and people who "enjoy it" as you say need to be put in their place as they are ruining video games for everybody else who has the good sense not to be a BroDude. Next you'll be saying it's ok to own an Xbox!

(This is sarcasm for those of you unable to tell the difference. And no, I don't own an Xbox)

They are fun games. Each year they add some new mechanics here and there but usually stick to the same formula people enjoy. Do you have a problem with people enjoying different things than you?

@unrealgunner: The same reason people buy a pack of playing cards every couple of months ,They like the dam game. I fell in love with call of duty 4 and been a veteran since. Why not buy a fresh pack of cards(new cod game) every year. I play cod in a way most cant and when i face worthy teams the competition still gets really intense. But can i understand why you dont get it. Changing cod is like changing spades rules now lol. Zombies and campian are our only hopes for big change.

Welcome to earth TC, where people are allowed to have an opinion. To some, CS: GO pales in comparison to CoD. Opinions within SW and the actual world doesn't mix to well.

@DocSanchez: People have different opinions--deal with it. If you find discussing the gaming industry and consumer habits to be off limits, what are you doing here? I've seen you repeatedly question all things related to Nintendo consumers.

You can't sit here and believe that CoD and Activision's success has had zero influence on the industry and what is being made. There are many less Witcher type of games being made these days compared to how many great original games were made in the past.

Games like The Witcher 3 are now more of a fluke, a risk, all because it's easier to make a CoD cookie cutter clone than to go out on a limb and take a chance with something original.

Best reason would be to have a dudebro friend and ask him. Personally, i've heard some casuals in my local EBgames talking about the strengths of the game (such as "amazing graphics") and why they love it so much. I giggled the whole time and tried to stay close to hear all the juicy bits. Cluelessbros are genuinely funny.

While your at it laugh at people who buy a pack of cards every couple of months. And people that buy season tickets to nba that barely change any rules to the game as well. Or students that watch the school team for four years in a row. We get that you dont like the game but to say that the yearly release is the reason why its a bad game doesnt make sense to me. Its one of the 1st mass user friendly online shooters for consoles so its only common sense that its leading now.

Oh and there has already and always will be and array of games that "copy" other games in this industry. Big whoop that its cod. It wont last forever and its not even 10 percent of games doing any "copying" Its in your head man. Name 4 successful cod clones... Sounds like y'all just wish a game you guys actually like was number one.

its because the series literally has became the " default " game . like some sport series . I've seen many kids go with their parents to buy a console, what do they buy with that console ? usually a Sport game like Fifa or COD .

besides , its a simple game . just run forward and shoot stuff . and it's always entertaining for people new to the series . I had a lot of fun with COD back in the WW2 and modern warfare 1&2 . after that the chemistry bored me , but I'm sure the newcomers liked it .

COD is a brand like Coca-Cola.

It has a winning formula that people love to come back to. People like what is familiar and what will give them a consistent experience.

Look what happened to Coke sales when the company changed the Classic Recipe and introduced New Coke. Sales fell like a rock until they eventually went back to the original formula.

Compared to Madden, Fifa, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed? Yes.

The point still stands. Despite being a great game there is absolutely nothing that makes the witcher 3 original. Fantasy WRPGs that take place on the middle ages and are inspired by norse mythology have been done to death. The thing is that market is currently completely oversaturated with shooters which is why games like the witcher 3 do not feel as derivative and unimaginative as the average shooter.

@DocSanchez: You're kinda playing Ostrich if you think games like COD have no impact on the industry. Halo 4 turning into a COD clone is exactly because of the success COD has had for example. Its business model of yearly releases used to be mostly reserved for sports game(that needed yearly releases for roster updates ) but it is now wifespread. Games like COD or AC have an incredible, undeniable impact on the indistustry that is for the most part not positive. COD's influence as the current best selling franchise goes way beyond "more games like Witcher 3 could have been made if it weren't for COD".

First off what you see as "minimal", many who play CoD would see as significant. That's a matter of opinion from the perspective of the player. People who sink 30-50 hours a week into CoD have a completely different perspective as somebody who's only exposure to the game is bitching about it on the internet.

Second, who cares? They are having fun. Again, do you have something against them having fun? CoD existing does not affect you in the slightest so why would you care if people are spending their money on something that makes them happy? It's not your place to tell people how to have fun.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If everyone was doing the same thing, it'd be harder for any of the games to stand out and most games would end up selling like crap.

Well, that's really not the case. But even if it was the case, then that clearly means that everyone will then quickly STOP copying Call of Duty. So they tried to copy the cool thing, they see it's not working out too well, and then they quickly go back to doing something a bit more unique and original.

Everyone's not copying Call of Duty. The only plausible reason for why everyone would copy Call of Duty is to leech off of its success, but even that fails to hold up because then sales would plummet which negates the whole point of copying Call of Duty in the first place.

Or let's take a soda analogy. The big star is Coca-Cola. So, why is it that the stores aren't just jam-packed full of Coke clones, with every company trying to get some of that Coke money? Why is it that there's ginger ale, orange soda, grape soda, mountain dew, Dr Pepper, sprite, strawberry soda, and so on? Why are companies making all of that crap when they know that it's Coke that makes the big money? Simply because if everyone was copying Coke, Coke would still make a shitload of money and then everyone else would go broke.

No, what scares developers from making more Witcher 3 is loosing money or not making as much as they can, just make a comparison how many CODs were sold vs how many Witchers were sold, that mean that not everybody likes games like Witcher 3 or Witcher 2 or Witcher 1, I´m one of those who doesn´t like games like Witcher, Dark Souls, Dragon Age or Mass Effect. Witcher 3 has sold 6 million copies since it´s launch, COD BO3 sold 6 million copies in the first week alone.

@Juub1990: You are just rehashing points others have made but have once again offered absolutely no evidence whatsoever that COD affects other games being made. Assumptions and circumstantial confirmation bias is all I've seen. Halo, not a series I am overly familiar with, but let's not pretend that you have any evidence COD is behind your perceived lower quality.

You have two audiences. One who plays COD every year and one who plays what you want. Not the same, and not connected.

Why should anyone who enjoys COD stop doing what they are doing and play something else? Why should the developers be forced to make something other than what is successful for them? Why does the existence of COD prevent games like Rise of the Tomb Raider/Mass Effect Andromeda/Street Fighter V/ Dark Souls 3/Horizon being made? (Spoiler: It doesn't, all those are coming out this year) We're about to have a big year in games, they are obviously being made. It's just the usual ivory tower bollocks from people who just want to look down on the masses.

We've had yearly releases from EA since THE EARLY NINETYS. These have been among the most popular games every single year. It didn't change a thing then, it doesn't change a thing now.

Not just the sports games. Also the action franchises. Take the "Strike" series.

Desert Strike 1992.

Jungle Strike 1993.

Urban Strike 1994.

This was during an era most would describe as classic.

There was FOUR Mortal Kombats in five years in from 1992-1997, and that's discounting the "Ultimate" version of 3.

This has been going on a long time, and didn't affect shit. Be honest: you people just want to look down on the people who don't take games as seriously as you do. Because you play "hardcore games" like Captain Toad while they occasionally pick up COD or FIFA and DO NOT CARE.

@DocSanchez: To be fair, I think it's a bit naive to think that Call of Duty didn't affect the rest of the industry at all. I mean, assuming that Call of Duty actually brought anything worthwhile to the table, it's only natural that some developers would say, "this is a really cool thing that they did here, and it might benefit our game if we used some variation of that idea."

Granted, that's not remotely close to copying Call of Duty or trying to turn their games into Call of Duty clones. But Call of Duty having an effect on the rest of the industry? I'd be absolutely shocked if that wasn't the case. And it happens in every art form. Rarely does any artist work in a vacuum, pretty much everyone pays attention to what other creators are doing and picks up some of the good ideas of other creators.
