Do we know for a fact if these are the same people? There are always people who reach a certain age at which point they start to game. In any case, why rag on their gaming habits? There's so many games to go around, you can get lost in your own niche without having to worry about what others play.

Look at Coca-Cola.. This is a great brand. It has a winning formula that people love to come back to. People like what is familiar and what will give them a consistent experience.

The makers of Call of Duty knows what the majority of what gamer's want in a first person shooter and they stick to that formula.Gamer's buy Call of Duty year after year and will keep buying year after year,it won't change anytime soon.

It seems to me there are less first person shooters coming out these days compared to a decade ago. They are loosing popularity as a genre to some degree. There are a lot of RPG's being released. What genre do you think we need more of and we are not getting because COD sells so well? I really would like a list of all these COD clones we are plagued with because I'm mostly drawing a blank. To you COD haters, do you hate all first person shooters? Is that it? Name your artsy hardcore first person shooter darling you cling to. Then tell me all the ground it is breaking. Why is it so incredibly unique?

There are other reasons developers are not taking the risks they used to. Games cost a lot more money to make and take longer to make than they once did yet they still charge the same price for them. If we didn't have big sellers like Call of Duty we wouldn't be able to sustain much of a video game industry. They would move on to a platform like cell phone games that are cheap and profitable. These publishers are in the business to make money. If they can't get rich they aren't going to bother. I'm willing to bet most look down on you silly video gamers who think games are comparable to great movies and art the same way you look at COD fans. The money they make off of these mainstream money making games could fund riskier projects. Don't hate them, it doesn't make you look witty or cool. Just ridiculous. Or be unique and hate on something no one else is hating on at least so you don't continue to annoy reasonable people with this sort of thread every week.

They like the game? Their friends like the game? They want to play together? It's their money?

@Juub1990: You are just rehashing points others have made but have once again offered absolutely no evidence whatsoever that COD affects other games being made. Assumptions and circumstantial confirmation bias is all I've seen. Halo, not a series I am overly familiar with, but let's not pretend that you have any evidence COD is behind your perceived lower quality.

You have two audiences. One who plays COD every year and one who plays what you want. Not the same, and not connected.

Why should anyone who enjoys COD stop doing what they are doing and play something else? Why should the developers be forced to make something other than what is successful for them? Why does the existence of COD prevent games like Rise of the Tomb Raider/Mass Effect Andromeda/Street Fighter V/ Dark Souls 3/Horizon being made? (Spoiler: It doesn't, all those are coming out this year) We're about to have a big year in games, they are obviously being made. It's just the usual ivory tower bollocks from people who just want to look down on the masses.

We've had yearly releases from EA since THE EARLY NINETYS. These have been among the most popular games every single year. It didn't change a thing then, it doesn't change a thing now.

Not just the sports games. Also the action franchises. Take the "Strike" series.

Desert Strike 1992.

Jungle Strike 1993.

Urban Strike 1994.

This was during an era most would describe as classic.

There was FOUR Mortal Kombats in five years in from 1992-1997, and that's discounting the "Ultimate" version of 3.

This has been going on a long time, and didn't affect shit. Be honest: you people just want to look down on the people who don't take games as seriously as you do. Because you play "hardcore games" like Captain Toad while they occasionally pick up COD or FIFA and DO NOT CARE.

The evidence I have is I actually played the game. Halo 4 released at around the same time as BO2 and coincidentally had many mechanics that were not in any previous Halo games but were heavily featured in COD since the first Modern Warfare. Many people at Bungie.net even made thread about the game being Halo of Duty. These mechanics while not unique to COD were very obviously implemented to increase the appeal to a broader audience. An audience from which a large part belonged to COD. The loadouts, ordnance drops and pts system were completely overhauled and I couldn't help but notice a very COD feeling in Halo 4. I'm not the only who had that opinion either.

I'm not saying people should stop enjoying COD or whatever. I actually intend to by MW3 soon. I simply think it's incredibly naive to think the best selling franchise in the past 10 years has had no influence on the industry. Now even Battlefield will be annualized and I seriously doubt COD's success has nothing to do with it. We had BF4 in late 2013/early 2014. Hardline in 2015 and now Battlefield 5 in 2016. Nobody can actually prove it's because of COD, it's not like EA will come out and say ''hey, we think COD is successful so we'll do the same''. Battlefield's current business model is simply eerily similar to COD when it was rather different before. Coincidence? Maybe but I think not.

Battlefield has had a game or expansion release every single year since 2002. They were milking that franchise well before CoD ever showed up.

See for yourself.

Battlefield also did expansions and DLC before CoD did. Battlefield did meaningless ranks and unlocks before CoD did. In fact most of the things that modern shooters take after started with Battlefield 2. CoD just stripped the vehicles from it and made it infantry focused in Modern Warfare and then released on all platforms.

CoD gets all of the hate for stuff Battlefield has done. Battlefield only recently started getting hated on it when people thought it was cool to complain about post-release content and annualized games.

Hell even Quake 2 came out only a year after Quake 1 and Doom/Wolfenstien had mission packs months after the original game released. This is not new and it's not CoD that started it. It's been around for decades. Even the Unreal series usually had only 1 year released between each game. (98,99, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007).

It's content put out to continue milking fans of the series. Where do you draw the line?

Usually expansion are done by the same team too. At least with CoD they split it up between 3 teams. Each team given 3 years to make their game.

@Wasdie: An expansion is intended as an addition to the current game and is priced lower. It's the same game.

A sequel is a different game that will more often than not make you ditch the previous game.

I find it odd that you're suggesting they're the same thing.

Same reason why Wii outsold the ps3. Most are casuals. What really sucks is that COD hurts other games. The new Killzone could end up turning into a low health high aim assist noob shooter like COD. And another bad thing about so many people buying COD is the more people playing a game means more tourneys and bigger prizes. COD is MLG while other less popular shooters that require more skill aren't... gaming nowadays lol.

"casuals" "noob" "hardcore gamer" "kiddy"

These are not words I hear from adults. This usually makes me pretty sure I'm talking to a teenager. And usually they put down a game by saying it is for the kids. Ironic.

I honestly sorta forgot that series kinda exists. I assume it still as popular as ever, because hits a very large threshold of people's tastes, whether or not its good or not.

@unrealgunner:

This is the first year I haven't bought a new COD game for a long time.

For me it was a case of being bored of the game for a few years. I would tell myself I wouldn't buy it. Then the game comes out and people I work with talk about it, I goto stores, I turn on the tv, I go to youtube... It's advertised relentlessly and I would give in and buy it.

Hype sells more than reality.

Wii U is just another console, same as PS4 or Xbox One. It doesn't have that casual appeal the Wii had with the Wii mote lmao. People don't buy the Wii U since there is nothing special about it. It's just a weak console nobody wants.

They're great deal. Solid MP you're already well trained at, epic, even if short campaign, and co-op mode. It's not going to revoltionize anything, but you can count on getting big portion of solid entertainment out of COD each year and people respond to that. It's not any different from movie blockbusters. Few people walking out of cinema from newest Marvel of Star Wars flick will ever count it among their favorite movies either, but they had fun.

I'm sorry but how are they a great deal? The multiplayer is very shallow as I said you can pick up CS:GO on sale for 1/8th of the price.

CS:GO is PC only at this point. And most COD sales come from consoles. Plus unlike CS:GO, COD is giving you more tons of new maps, weapons and new settings each year, introducing gameplay changes, while still retaining the core. and CS:GO also lacks SP and it's co-op support is laughable.

Sure, hardcore gamers, one who want to focus on high-end skill based FPS competitive gameplay will go for CS:GO, but they aren't the only ones around. CoD simply appeals to more casual type of gamer. Who wants to pop in the game, have some fun and nothing else. He doesn't care about polishing his skills or petite balance changes. What he cares is that for the last 11 years he has gotten pretty good in basic COD, so he doesn't have to start fresh, which would be the case if he switched to any other game, while at the same time each COD's content make it feels like it's brand new game. So they're get the comfortable feeling of familiarity, while still not feeling like they play the same game for half the decade, like dedicated competitive FPS gamers do.

CS: GO has mods, but let's not kid ourselves... mods aren;t something casual gamers get into. Bassicaly COD is simply a great lazy man's game. Each year you get fun campaign and co-op campaign and then get to play with lots of content. You also buy season pass, so for the next 12 months you get a constant supply of new additional content, without having to look out for it. Millions of people just love easy, dependable and non-challenging entertainment. Why do you think all those NCIS shows or Big Bang Theory are so popular? It's not like they viewers genuinelly thing there's nothing better on TV.

I've bought every single COD since COD4:MW and every single year it's given me a good and fun time. Some of them didn't deliver in the longevity aspect and some of them I played right up to the release of the newest release.

Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare were pretty meh, Black Ops 3 is pretty damn awesome.

I am over this future shit I will say and I would love for the next COD to go back to just Modern Warfare or World War style. Enough with the double jump and wall running give us a break on that.

Because they like the game and want to play it.

What business is it of yours?

Was going to say something but this pretty much is the answer.
