Why does Nostalgia only affect Nintendo Games?

I hear so many people say the only reason Zelda and Mario games are so popular is because of Nostalgia, but why doesnt this work for other game series?

I can say the same thing about any game series that has been around for multiple generations.

Just because I am a fan of a series doesnt mean I only like the current release because I like the older games.

Is MGS4 a great game because of Nostalgia? No.

Is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword a great game because of Nostalgia? No.

Everyone needs to stop having their heads shoved so far up their asses and realize a game can be good without Nostalgia.

I'm immune to nostalgia because of my objective nature :PI love a game one day, and bash its sequel like there's no tomorrow!

Nostalgia works both ways aswell. Those who say SM64 is better than Galaxy need to wake up.

The problem with that nostalgia arguement is that you don't know if the people playing the games have played all the past games in these franchises.They may be new consumers of these products.

Yep. There are so many older gaming series that I loved in my youth that I either dont care much for, or flat out cant stand now.

Sonic, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden, Phantasy Star, Castlevania, Punch Out, Mega Man, Contra, etc...

SMG, SMG2 and NSMBWii are all Mario games I really enjoyed this gen.

But guess what? :o I didn't like SM64, or Sunshine at all. Why is there this gap in my nostalgia?

I've noticed from the N64 vs. Wii discussions recently that most current Nintendo fans are with the times while its the current Nintendo haters that are high on nostalgia.

Its funny as hell. Some hater tells me that I only like SMG due to nostalgia, but then turns around and tells me SM64 is an infinitely better game! :lol:

its the only thing they have to say on nintendo well made games.

its starting to get tedius because all franchises are getting"old" so this nostalgia should effect DMC, Halo, etc

I said it before and I'll say it again.I say people like Uncharted because of nostalgia. People grew up watching many movies/TV series similar to uncharted, such as MacGyver and Indiana Jones, they don't want to leave it behind, so they stick with something similar, Uncharted.

It's that easy.

PS: it would be nice if at least ONE, just ONE person in here didn't have a nintendo related gamer pic ;), i mean, TC you have permanently tatooed yourself(assuming) with the tri-force.. I don't think you did that because of one game you played, I would have to imagine that zelda has held a place in your heart for many a year. I may be way off, but to permanently tattoo yourself with a game logo/icon shows you are at least somewhat emotionally invested in the franchise... but hey maybe you just REALLY like triangles, and the idea of a "TRIANGLE MADE OF TRIANGLES" was more than you could handle ;) just kidding. And btw, nice tatty man. - To say you don't have a long time attachment to zelda/link I think would be an understatement. Mario/zelda and company are CLASSIC and nothing can ever come close to that. They will be the "forefathers" for all games, and as such, YES I do think nostalgia plays a part. in reviews however? not so much.dRuGGeRnaUt

I have played every Zelda game recently, so I have no nostalgia for it even when I hype each brand new game.

Because Nintendo games are kid friendly, and to all the hardcore grown up gamers thay can't handle the fact that games with child like charm can be good, so it can only be nostalgia or hype which games like the Elder Scrolls or GTA are immune to.

If you think that nostalgia is not a factor in Nintendo games I'm sorry to say you're wrong. I and many others grew up with them and have very fond memories of some of the best games ever made. Not Playstation, not the Gamecube, not any of today's systems. Just the NES (and the SMS but to a lesser extent). Of course there's going to be more nostalgia towards games that people loved as a child. The reason you don't hear about it about Uncharted or any other series is that they simply have not had the time that Nintendo's games have had.

it plays a small part in their game's reception, but people who think that it's ONLY nostalgia are simply fooling themselves. It's the core design that makes most of nintendo's main franchises great. The nostalgia factor simply enchances that.

So you're telling me that since you can't stand these games now that you loved in the past negates your nostalgiac feelings for them? That because they're unplayable now that nostalgia evaporates? It does not just disappear because you've revisited games that by today's standards are archaic in comparison.

Sure I disagree with you HEAVILY regarding SMG/2 vs. SM64, but thats not so bad.

Its the ones that tell me that I'm the one blinded by nostalgia for enjoying current Nintendo games, but then pull a 180 and start getting nostalgic about old Nintendo titles that have been surpassed since.

There is a big difference. I find your opinion absurd, but outside of that I don't think you're a troll and I wont carry a grudge in other discussions. These other users I'm thinking of are just idiots and trolls and not worth engaging in discussion.

Metal Gear - been around forever. I loved it back then in the 8 bit days and all the way up through MGS3. Dont like anything that came afterwards.

Final Fantasy - Another one that I've loved since the 8 bit days. Probably my favorite series of all time. Cant stand it now.

I wont go through the whole list as I'm sure you get the point. I loved these games in my youth and loved them for years, but there isnt enough nostalgia in the world to make me enjoy the newer iterations.

My point. I enjoy new Mario and Zelda games because they are still outstanding games. Nostalgia is not enough to make me stick with a series.

Maybe because no other games are as timeless, and brilliant leaps in gameplay as Nintendo games. But ya know, as Arbitor365 said, we are all Nintendrones who are "Nostalgia pretentious"

Nope. When I'm pulling off amazing platforming maneuvers through these gravity defying, outlandish, 3d levels in SMG2 the only thing keeping going are the memories rushing back from SMB.

I know alot of people where Skyward Sword is the first Zelda game they have ever played and they love it. No nostalgia involved... unless nostalgia is genetic :P
