Can someone explain to me why a machine with such weak hardware costs this much?

- Its less graphically capable than the PS Vita

- Has a low res screen of 800 - 400 pixels

- Lack of features

In comparison you can purchase full fledged tablets for $99 that totally destroy the 3DS in both graphical performance, resolution and features. Sure, the 3DS has the benefit of physical controls and Nintendo IP, but still why is it so overpriced?

Just remember, it doesn't come with a charger.

1) Mobile gaming sucks

2) There is no fully fledged tablet at $99

3) Your answers are in the OP

The WiiU is still $299 despite being nowhere near as powerful as PS4 and having only 32gb of space. Nintendo rips people off on hardware prices.

Just because something is new doesn't mean it should be overpriced.

The Vita costs the same price, yet has way better hardware, screen resolution, controls and features.

Exactly, I understand Nintendo likes to make profit off the hardware, but I'm pretty sure New 3DS doesn't cost $99+ to manufacture.

I was just joking because of the name, I would imagine it would be more expensive than the original 3ds or 2ds so maybe its just adjusting for tiers? I dont know tbh, maybe it will drop price when the NX handheld is announced

Cuz Nintendo overcharges for everything. Don't forget that you aren't guaranteed an IPS screen either.

Or Nintendo should just drop the price big time on the lower tiers and price the New 3DS more reasonably for what you get. I also totally forgot that the New 3DS doesn't even come with a charger, like WTF???

Still way better than the 3DS screen and even higher than the Vita's screen.

Don't forget we are talking about a 6" screen here. A pixel density of 252 ppi is more than enough to not notice any major pixel separation. The PPI in the 3DS is terrible even for the smaller 3DS.

@emgesp: so? Most mobile devices have 1080p screens at smaller screen sizes. Mine is 1440p, and it costs more. Not to mention, 2MP rear-facing camera and an LCD screen? That's not fully featured. It's budget, just like mobile gaming is budget garbage.

The 3DS is ass on a hardware level, but at least it's not trash mobile gaming.

My point was just to show there are other devices as expensive, or less expensive that offer much greater capabilities and features than the New 3DS.

There is no excuse for a handheld to be priced at $200 that doesn't even have a Standard Def LCD screen.

Lastly, how exactly is the Fire HD not a fully featured Tablet?

good question... but at least its new and still getting new, quality games...

a better question... is why tf is Vita still $170?? basically a dead system, with no new support... I been trying to score one since last year, but I refuse to pay full price for an unsupported system... I only want it for a few of the old school digital classics I have on my psp, but I am not paying full price. It did not even get a black friday sale

I own a New 3DS XL and I got it for £159, absolutely worth every penny imo but that's just me.

I still think it's the best handheld ever created.

Sure its dead, but the hardware itself is vastly superior to the New 3DS. So, in reality it's a better deal, plus it comes with the charger. Now whether you like the games offered on the Vita is a totally different story. It still gets support, just not AAA support.

Over-priced? They have options. 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, n3DS & n3DS XL, you can get a 2DS for as low as $90 new at retailers ($80 deal at Walmart right now), or one can get 3DS XLs for as little as $160 from GameStop (which they have for NES edition XLs and remaining Persona Q LE XLs). New 3DS has new enhanced 3D that head tracks, faster processor, c-stick, Amiibo capabilities, better shoulder buttons, etc, but isn't essential, but if you want more then pay more. They have very reasonable tiers available.

Yes its budget but its still a fully fledged tablet in terms of what you can do on it and priced very well for what you get.

Also, I hope you realize over 95% of all tablets released have LCD screens, only a handful offer OLED screens.

That still doesn't change the fact that for what you get the N3DS is overpriced, especially given that you have to pay extra for a charger.

At most the N3DS should cost $129.99 with charger and even that is pushing. $210 is a joke for what it offers in terms of hardware/features.

It is overpriced, and the price of Nintendo's most recent handhelds plays into why parents are more willing to give their kids tablets nowadays.

The 3DS is overpriced trashsince day one. I remember playing it at a certain store, I wowed... so cheap, so outdated.

Nintendo fanboys eat up anything from Nintendo, they also bought the newer model(s).

It's priced at that amount because Nintendo know that mamy millions of people are happy to pay that price.

It's basic economics. When there's a very high demand for your product, you can price it higher than normal.

Totally agree. Why would a parent buy their kids a $99 - $200 handheld that is limited to playing games when they can pay the same price for a tablet that is way more versatile.

Tablets might not be the best gaming machines, but they still can play games well enough and they are also better for watching movies, listening to music and internet browsing.

That's not the point. Again, exclusive software doesn't justify overpriced hardware.

For example, the PS4/XB1 are both priced much better for what you get than the New 3DS.

@quatoe said:

Where I live a bend new Vita is still 200 bucks and the New 3ds is 189.99.

Add charger for the New 3DS and its the same price. You can't assume everyone purchasing a New 3DS bought previous handhelds and even if they did they could have sold them to put the money towards the New 3DS.

That's the funny part because there isn't as high of demand for New 3DS as there was the original 3DS, let alone the DS.

And it's a problem since kids are an important market to Nintendo, so if they aren't getting them at age 5-8 then they will have a harder time generating new lifetime fans.

The 3DS has seen a major drop-off in sales after the DS. I'm sure that wouldn't be the case if the 3DS had been fully-featured from the start, and sold at a competitive price. I'm sure kids would love to play 3DS games, but they also want to watch Netflix, and their favorite Youtube/Twitch streamers, and play with the fun programs a tablet provides. In that case they'll take the tablet, and settle with tablet games which tons of kids like anyways.

@emgesp: no I think it's not fully featured, I'm not a Wal-Mart customer.

Do you even know what fully featured means? Its not about having the highest specs, but having all the basic features most tablets have like the ability to.....

- Play games

- Watch movies and listen to music

- Browse the internet

- Take videos and photos.

The HD Fire can do all those things.

*Play crappy 1$ games with limited gameplay.

And the 3DS can do all of that as well

But can you play 3D games on your 100$ cheapo tablet?

That's not the point. Again, exclusive software doesn't justify overpriced hardware.

For example, the PS4/XB1 are both priced much better for what you get than the New 3DS.

Didn't know you could play your PS4\X1 on the go!

Can you play the 3DS on the big screen?

That's the funny part because there isn't as high of demand for New 3DS as there was the original 3DS, let alone the DS.

Handhelds in a nutshell, nowadays. Especially in the West. Still, they're selling, and Nintendo has a thing for not lowering their prices by any substantial amounts.
