Why does the New 3DS cost $200?

Just bought my kid a 3DS XL. Was outraged when I read beforehand that a charger is not included. There is no reason a charger should not be included aside from the obvious money grab. Even Microsoft isn't that bad (they've actually gotten a lot better recently IMO).

Lost a ton of respect for Nintendo. I only got my kid a 3DS because it's the one thing he has been asking for for a long time now, and he totally deserves it. However, as a consumer and gamer I feel I could never support such a company going forward.

But 3DS XLs still come with an AC adapter.

True. But how absurd is that? How many other companies sell you an electronic piece of mobile equipment with no darn way to charge/power the thing included? Why the hassle? Inexcusable.

Cell phone companies do it, charge you up the ass for the phone, then charge you for every accessory (screen protector, case, car charger). And that stuff is way more expensive by comparison. This is a $10 charger with a $5 third party charger option. If I had to guess the real reason behind the decision has more to do with they wanted it to release at a nice round number like $200 without it eating into their profit margins, nothing too sinister as people expect. This is going to be a handheld that'll cost more. Has better specs, better batteries, better 3D features. Like I said above too, if that $5 bugs you, wait for one of their numerous sales. They have the New 3DS on sale now for $175 at GameStop, $5 more for a third party charger, that's $180 all together and $20 under MSRP.

Now, I don't want to pretend Nintendo isn't cheap in their own way, they are, cheap as hell. Refuse to be flexible on pricing. Really picky about their publishing decisions and limited production of everything. If anything grinds my gears more its that.

How is this difference not seen?

Screen protector, cases, car chargers are NOT required for the functionality of the core product. EVERY iPhone that I've bought comes with a very simple USB charging cable/AC adapter. Once you start going into, "well, you can just wait for a sale" your argument has faltered, because then it resides in the realm of excuses and is not predicated upon principle. You've conceded that what Nintendo's doing is a shit practice.....which it is. There is NO excuse to not include an A/C adapter instead of simple greed, period. It fucks over new consumers.

But Nintendo knows their sheep base will gladly pay the extra amount, and then will turn around and defend them. Un-fucking-believable. It's no wonder they're getting away with murder in their policies, they have brain dead zombies salivating over and abiding by every practice they put into place, no matter how asinine. It must be wonderful to have people who don't actually think for themselves, but just open their wallets and follow.

@MirkoS77:

It isn't the best move, but it doesn't reach the extent you claim. It uses a standard mini(?) USB charger. It's a.product that every household has. I can remember when labelling "USB charging" on products was a.thing.

It took off EVERYTHING started.using them. It is incredibly common to have such a thing. I wasn't joyous whe hearing the news.of no AC, but looking back it was very minor. Imo a bigger deal was the exclusion of.the dock for the 3dsxls. The dock on the original model was great, and included. Incredibly useful.

It doesn't.

It looks like one, but it's a proprietary AC adapter port.

oh wow I think you are right. Everything nowadays has moved to micro/mini or whatever the variants are called. I must have forgot exactly what the larger port looked like.

^^That was my main point.

It's the principle. There is no justifying it aside from greed, don't be so naive. I believe even the 2DS comes with a charger.

I misspoke, my apologies. Naive wasn't the proper word choice, I was too quick to throw a label out there.

Tolerable would fit better, i.e. don't excuse their practice of excluding the charger. They should do better.

It's OK. I think you may be mistaking my post for someone else's. I'm not excusing them not including the charger. I agree with you.

Market seems willing to pay for that price and likely internally projected diminishing returns in net profit if priced lower but more unit sales.

It costs $200 because Nintendo was guaging how much consumer would pay for a Nintendo product. The original model launched at $250. That gives the impression of a more premium product/brand.

With the Wii on shelves, at the time, for $139.99, Nintendo wanted to increase the price expectations of their products. Wiiu was likely scaled back in tech because of this.

So with the original model dropping to $169.99 they needed a way to bring the price back up, hence why they designed a cheaper version to manufacture--AND then sell it for more profit.

Can someone explain to me why a machine with such weak hardware costs this much?

- Its less graphically capable than the PS Vita

- Has a low res screen of 800 - 400 pixels

- Lack of features

In comparison you can purchase full fledged tablets for $99 that totally destroy the 3DS in both graphical performance, resolution and features. Sure, the 3DS has the benefit of physical controls and Nintendo IP, but still why is it so overpriced?

Because it can be? Supply vs demand and it is crushing the PS vita, the only real competition it has.... Honestly the mere fact it can play old DS games as well too, a massive library, would make it worth getting.. Though it is quite absurd the power adapter is sold separately. Then again this is no different than Sony's shitty tactic of forcing psp owners to buy their own psp specified SD chips which are usually twice the price of a regular sd chip..

The demand doesn't exceed the supply. Sales for the 3DS peaked awhile ago.

Not even close. Gamecube had way more quality games.

That's a matter of opinion.

2DS should be like $79.99 tops at this point.

For the tech? That's what people don't understand. You are paying for software development and support. This is a key reason Nintendo as a 3rd party would not work.

Ubisoft doesn't need to sell hardware to support their software business and they don't have nearly as much money as Nintendo.

Nintendo has more than enough money to invest in purely software.

@emgesp:

Ubisoft has a strict release schedule. They release the game no matter the state it is in. Nintendo does not do this. There are ideas which are developed which may never see the light of day, some games get pushed WAY back from a projected release date, and some projects are cancelled all together. This would not work as a 3rd party. Every single release would be a huge risk. There's also the brand. Nintendo is a branded product. What happens if a platform fails which was bringing them a major source of income? Nintendo's hardware and software are very circular in a monetary sense.

Ever since Iwata(RIP) took over Nintendo has pushed to make as much profit off of hardware as they can... Financial it saved Nintendo.

Before Iwata:

  • Gameboy - No Competition
  • Gameboy Colour - No Competition
  • NES - No competition
  • SNES - More powerful than the Genesis
  • N64 - More powerful than a PS1
  • NGC - More powerful than a PS2

After Iwata:

  • DS - A generation behind PSP
  • Wii - A generation behind PS3
  • 3DS - A generation behind PSV
  • WiiU - A generation behind PS4

Without Iwata I am curious to see what the NX will be.

It costs money to develop. They want to reach the break even point of cost and revenue in a short span.

We're not? I've not be moderated nor warned, so yes, obviously what I've been saying has been deemed suitable despite your objections, thanks. It's system wars, and frankly, I've seen far more vitriolic sentiment towards other "fans" than I've towards Nintendo's. I'll say what I please in a constructive manner of which I please and will heed moderators' objections if I'm violating the ToU, not yours.

What? You see how Sony fans get insulted on a daily basis? I've brought that up before and been met with "well the deserve it". What's the difference?

This "upgraded" hardware is very minimal. Still doesn't justify the $200 price tag.

Well I appreciate the compliment, but you should know by now (if you're familiar with my posts at all) that I'm not better than that when it comes to Nintendo. I don't really try to hide it as it's readily apparent. Oftentimes my frustration with them comes out strong, and that very often passes to those (I see as) apologizing for it. But it's a bit odd you'd single me out for being modded yourself. Anyhow, I'll try to tone it down, and apologize if you were offended and for my previous tone.

Mind me asking what was the post that you so objected to?

@MirkoS77: It was the calling Nintendo consumers "brain dead zombies" part. I mean we all have different tastes, and it seems a bit unfair to label a group of consumers in such a nasty tone. I remember your posts from the GGD, and you would engage in discussion with gramatonclinton ( I think that was his name) and you would never resort to attacking a fan base back then. I was kinda shocked to read that from you, tbh.

Of course I myself have been guilty of doing similar things in the past, and just recently I was moderated for calling a group "knuckle dragging imbeciles". So if they'll jam me up for that, I'd be very careful with my choice of words in the future. Of course that applies to us all equally.

@emgesp: lol what? It's a measely $200 for a handheld with an expensive state-of-the-art 3D display and a processor powerful enough to render three unique pictures at the same time. You're a great reminder of how there are nothing but trolls on this forum.

I'm not above anyone else in letting my emotions sometimes get the best of me to a fault, but it's nice to know some hold my contributions in esteem (or even remember them at all). Grammaton_Cleric, yes. Great guy, he's now at Freedom CGC forums. A long time ago. I do tend to act juvenile when it comes to Nintendo because much of the logic and arguments I see from their fans I view as childish or just not well thought out...from my view obviously. I struggle against holding them in contempt or speaking in condescension, it's something I always have to catch myself on, and will work on it.

I'll keep your feedback in mind. I appreciate it, and again will try to be more respectful as you have a valid point.

First of all the 3D screen tech is not state of the art. Maybe back in 2010 it was, but not 2016.

Also, the processor is nothing special. It's just a Quad Core Arm 11 CPU that was introduced in 2005. So, very outdated by todays standards.

State of the art? Powerful processor? Notsureifserious.gif.

The hardware is probably only like $50 to produce at this point. It's crap. Not at all state of the art. The only correct answer for why it's $200 is because Nintendo wants it to be $200. I would say that is the price the market dictates, but with Wii-U Nintendo has shown they don't' really care what the market says the price should be (i.e. that it is drastically overpriced compared to optimal, or compared to similar technologies).

I picked up a 3DS XL for $150 like 3 or 4 years ago. It doesn't seem particularly rational for hardware that is 98% the same, to cost $50 more several years later.

And the damn thing doesn't even come with a charger to boot.

Sure, the 3DS has the benefit of physical controls and Nintendo IP, but still why is it so overpriced?

because its incredibly popular and succesful, selling over 50 million units in 4 years.

because games. It has Super Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Xenoblade Chronicles, Mario Kart 7, Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Fates, Animal Crossing, Zelda A Link Betwen Worlds, Yoshis New Island, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Shin Megamei Tensei, Pokemon X & Y, and a bunch of other games in other genres, first party and third party alike.

@2Chalupas: Basically you don't even know the first thing about autostereoscopic parallax barrier 3D displays. Way to show your ignorance as a troll lol.

The original 3DS was popular, not the N3DS which is what I was specfically talking about.

It still isn't state of the art. Nothing from 2011 can be considered state of the art anymore.

@emgesp: you didn't list a 3D display more advanced. I understand why.
