Most people treat the PlayStation Portable like it's utter garbage and a complete failure, neither of which is true. It's not selling like the DS, but that's beside the point.

The PSP managed to do what no other company has been able to: they broke into the handheld market, something Nintendo has always owned. They broke into it and are actually being quite successful. While the sales aren't anything compared to the DS, the PSP was able to wrestle away a small portion of the handheld market from Nintendo.

Just because the PSP isn't selling quite as well as the DS doesn't make it bad. It deserves some credit for actually being able to get in on the handheld market, something no one else has done successfully.

The PSP doesn't get any credit because it doesn't have very many good games. Even the few good games are ps2 ports anyway.

Maybe you should stop talking before someone comes in and brings up the point that many, many gaming sites list more AA/AAA games for the PSP than DS.

And really, is it all that bad? No. It just wasn't nearly as successful as the DS.

Why? It's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop.

The world may never know.

What utter nonsense, especially coming from a guy witha name and avatar linked to a series that consistently promises but never dlievers.

Thus even more difference in the huge gap of personal opinions. After all, I and many others found the Zelda games fantastic.

But hey, that's our opinion. And you've got yours.

Gamegear was awesome. Nothing could waste 6 AA's quite like it.

PSP is great aside from the whole UMD thing though. The fact I can play shows and movies when I don't want to play games is very convenient. Just need a memory stick big enough to make it worthwhile.

I give it credit where its due. I just don't like it much. Many of the games I've seen on the thing have unacceptable load times. Its a pet peeve that really bugs me. Plus, I just don't think it was that comfortable to play on but then I think that of almost any handheld.

PS 6000th post yay... I think?

Because either people here either don't have one or bought one and sold it or never bought the good games for it. PSP is great for what it is designed to do. And it has sold more than Xbox or Gamecube did and plenty of you fanboys loved those.

3 reasons really

  1. It isn't the first to take part of the handheld pie. Regardless of what you think, there have been other companies/handhelds that have enter the market and taken part of the handheld pie before, however, in the long run they have all went away
  2. The massive hype for the system before it came out, it was suppose to "take handheld gaming out of the gutter" and what not. Doesn't matter if it is doing 'alright' since it claim it would take over in little to no time. When you aim for number 1, and you miss, you fail, doesn't matter where you land.
  3. Good games are nothing, if no one is playing them. The same problem happen with the GC last gen. IMO the GC had some of the best games last gen, but since so few people played them no one really cared. The same is kind of happening here, there are good games on the PSP but no one (not enough) are playing them so they don't matter.

Is 20 million sold in 2005-2007 really doing that much better than 1991-1995 with Game Gear selling around 10 million?

I mean, to compare the size of the markets then and today the Genesis and the Super Nintendo combined sales are probably about half that of the Playstation or Playstation 2.

Though, I agree with you, the PSP is not a bad system, and I really don't understand why people rag on it so much. I don't have one, and don't really want one; but it's not a bad system and it seems to have plenty of good games.

I should've rephrased my Zelda comment. It actually DOES deliver: boredom, and antiquated gameplay that never changes.

Each and every console manufacturer is going to take over the world. They all miss their ultimate goal. The PSP is not a "failure" if people are having funwith it.

Of course its going to be successful, its all brand power, I know at least 5 friends of mine that think PSP has crap games out right now, nothing worth playing and still they bought a PSP. Sony could sell flaming bags of s*** and it would sell well.

PSP has sold 50% of what the DS sold

a new handheld coming in the game that can sell half of what DS sold since kidtendo has been making handhelds since like 1989... is GREAT

and since its Sony there here to stay. you can expect the PSP2/3/4/5/6 ect... and as time goes on Sony will take the handheld market

That's a matter of opinion on Zelda, so we'll just throw that out. Fact is, once again, it didn't meet it's hype in SW, so it FLOPPED. What do yo guys not understand about this? If this is not true, the ZeldaTP was not a flop. It's rated 8.8 and sold millions, no? If you want to hear credit given to the PSP with no type of bashing I suggest you go elsewhere.

Hmmm. Did the Okami sig seal the deal that I'm a Ninty fanboy? I don't deny the success of the PSP, but you do know what forum this is and why it doesn't get much credit here? Outside of here it could get all the credit it wants. SW is a different beast and if you still deny it flopped here, then you'll just never understand. And years later the DS is just a fad just like the Wii? lmao More of a fanboy statement, then anything I stated.

Because DS fanboys are attracted to the PSP like bugs to a light, then they whine and scream so that anything positive about the PSP can't be heard. Even a group of only 2 DS fanboys can produce an outcome like this.

Steer clear of them, it's not worth the argument. Seriously, the biggest point I've ever heard one say is "Look at the sales". When you point out the sales are fine and there are plenty of good games, they don't talk anymore. They must think that you are going to forget about it.

I wonder what makes Nintendo fanboys so hateful, it can't be Mario and Kirby they're always so nice and friendly. I don't know what it is about Nintendo fanboys that makes them so vicious towards other consoles. Nintendo has always taught friendship, something must have gone wrong.

I enjoy how all the Sony fanboys are now... Before its release. OMG It is going to be the greatest handheld ever. During, Its is awesome. OMG its going to beat Nintendo...Minute lite hits...ZOMG DAMAGE CONTROL. Well...It faired well against Nintendo before getting wrecked.

Acenso

I would say it really is the greatest handheld. Constantly updating and changing, multimedia, and really fun. I don't see how it wrecked against Nintendo...

I believe that the PSP is just a starting point for Sony in handheld business. It did good this time around, once the next round of handhelds come out, they will probably release another and improve on their weakpoints.

IMPROVEMENT - that should be the key to Sony's success in handheld market. Opposed to Nintendo's point of REVOLUTION and INNOVATION, which seem to me to be new ways to play the rehashed game. But there is a market for Nintendo's business style and they are obviously making money. So as long as you guys buy these consoles, you're telling Nintendo you love their stuff, and they are going to keep making more of the like. It's all fine and dandy, just not my cup of tea.

I wonder what makes Nintendo fanboys so hateful, it can't be Mario and Kirby they're always so nice and friendly. I don't know what it is about Nintendo fanboys that makes them so vicious towards other consoles. Nintendo has always taught friendship, something must have gone wrong.

It's because inside, deep down, they are pissed off at their games and can't stand being sold on the same character in different genres.

[QUOTE="LINKloco"]It's a flop.LINKloco

Did you read the post at all? And if you did, please be so kind as to explain WHY it is a flop.

It didn't make good on it's hype, therefore it flopped. This is SW. No props for floppage.

wow, ur really obsessed with flops. your signature says has a sentence with the word flop, and the first two posts u made contained the word flop 3 times. wow.

Ur obviously a nintendo fanboy btw.

PSP is a great system, i do believe its underrated. DS is just like the wii. Fad, and more little kids buy them.

And years later the DS is just a fad just like the Wii? lmao More of a fanboy statement, then anything I stated.

fanboy statement? anything but nintendo is good for me, and the rest of the gamer population. BTW, I dont care if this is SW or not. Unless im voilating the TOS, i can say w/e i want .

The PSP is not the first handheld to break into Nintendo market.

lol, now that's a desperate statement right there.

Which fad will end? The DS/Wii or lack of interest in Sony products?

Great post, and I actually completely agree.

PSP ain't really my thing, and I prefer the DS and its games, but good on Sony for making a strong dent in the handheld market, and forcing Nintendo to work harder to please the gamers.

The next handheld war is going to be really interesting.

Because Nintendo fanboys are the most vicious fanboys in the world. They will do anything to ruin the good name of PSP. pimperjones

You'd have a lot more credibility if you hadn't postedthat thread on how horrible the DS's graphics are and claimed not to be a graphics whore.
