Not sure if serious, but Goldeneye already lost most of its relevance when Perfect Dark came out some 3 years later. Not to mention that Goldeneye, like most 3D N64 games, is pretty much unplayable these days. It was great for its day, but now hopelessly outdated.

Lucianu

That's false, if you practice to get used to the controls.. Perfect Dark is actually more horrible, it has worse framerate problems.

I'm sure that if you practice walking on one leg, you'll eventually get used to it as well. Doesn't make it any more comfortable.

And yes, PD is equally unplayable as Goldeneye these days.

Goldeneye is unplayable by today's standards. Half-Life stomps all over that game.

I disagree. I much prefer the structure of Goldeneye. Control scheme aside, Goldeneye is the better game.

Well you can show me examples of analogies to your hearts content, fact is once you get used to that control scheme of the N64 controller you can play it just fine, if ofcourse you don't mind the bad framerate. Who's to say X person playing with it wouldn't feel comfortable? It's all a matter of preferance, the aged mechanics of a game hindering the enjoyment for a dude is mearly subjective, that's all there is to it.

I think these two games are horrible due to the framerate, like i said before, Doom I & II have aged infinitely better. But i'm not going to pretend my preferance is absolute fact.

Not even close. It aged terribly and is only fun for long time fans of the game.

Well Half Life, Final Fantasy VII, certain Metal Gears and other games aged terribly but are still considered the best games ever made :D

Those didn't age nearly as badly as Goldeneye did.

I actually think they aged worse. People say goldeneye because of the controls, but back in that time people were accustomed to how it worked. With the popularity of the fps genre and the evolved control scheme, this is understandable. However, from a purely gameplay perspective, Goldeneye still holds up incredibly well, and given the proper setup(practice too) it is still an incredibly fun game. I was surprised, myself.

It was the defining console FPS. Excellent cinematic campaign coupled with incredible splitscreen action. Perfect Dark has certainly aged better and gets more playtime from me after all these years. But back in the day everybody was playing Goldeneye. All day, everyday. What an epic game.

Controls are a big part of why it seems clunky. You would strafe with the analog and aim with the yellow arrows, reverse of what we play now. Both Perfect Dark and 007 are ace in HD on a 360 controller with auto-aim turned off.

What the heck has aged about Half Life, obvious engine aside? The AI is better than most found in first person shooters today, the framerate is smooth as butter, the control scheme is as responsive as ever, the weapons are varied and feel right in correlation to how they look like and how they were meant to perform, the enemies are varied (and a challenge wen it comes to some). The only thing people could complain about are some of the environments were platforming such as in any 90s FPS (like Duke3D, Doom, Unreal) is required.

By unplayable I don't mean literally unplayable. If you put effort and will into something, you can even play the most hopelessly aged games. Doesn't change the fact that Goldeneye's control scheme is infinitely inferior to what we're used to these days, be it m+kb or dual analog control, and this is a considerable obstacle for people who want to return to this game, let alone those who have never played it before. This has nothing to do with preference, just common sense.

And yes, I would say Doom has aged better, but that's also a bit unfair seeing as Doom can be adjusted and modded in just about every way (including in terms of controls), and its graphics/art styIe could pass off as charming more easily than those of Goldeneye. I don't think framerate has that much to do with it.

Seriously Perfect Dark was 007 but much better. Then again even Perfect Dark wasn't that good because of controls and horrible framerate. The only good thing about these games was that they were much better than the exclusive FPS on the other console (MoH with it's useless sniper rifles, LOL, look I can see the enemies that pop out the fog ten meters away up close! ).

I would dare to say that even older games like Doom and Quake are still better.

I love Goldeneye, but it hasn't aged well. Mainly in controls, my God the N64 controller sucks now to be honest! It's so hard trying to play a FPS with just one controll stick! I hope they make a remake for PS3 and 360 soon....

Of the actual N64 game? Never going to happen. Activision/Eurocom's game will be the only game on all three console with the Goldeneye name, and that's that.

To be honest a lot of early 3d games just have not aged well at all. The technology has rendered them obsolete. It's quite sad because previous favourites like Ultima Underworld just aren't revisitable like 2D games are. We've got better scale, better movement, better everything.

I realise it sounds shallow but it's the truth. The generations have seen much improved 3D and games like goldeneye look and play atrociously in comparison to our average games now.

Nah. Best console FPS without a doubt is Halo: Combat Evolved. 2001 with those huge environments/level design (not The Library lol), the music, the amazing graphics and best of all the gameplay. The things such as melee'ing, controls such as one button for grenade the other to fire your gun all with triggers which was so perfect for that game. That game is so awesome that it defines awesome and when Halo: CEA comes out in a few weeks everyone can relive that incredible game with a new coat of paint and I can't wait.

I think we need to move on from this game. Yes it was awesome for its time on a consoles but its like an ex-girlfriend. You always have fond memories of summer time love but you have grown a little inside and out and its time to move on.

Goldeneye isn't even the best N64 FPS. :? Perfect Dark is better.

That aside, it just isn't a good game by today's standards, and I'm not talking about graphics.

Well, most of the time you play the game from a first-person perspective and shoot, hence first-person shooter. Makes sense really.

Exactly, hence it being the better game :P. I actually prefer the feel and design of Goldeneye's campaign (not the AI and lack of co-op though), but PD64 obliterates it and most any FPS out there today in terms of features. It is really ahead of its time. TOo bad it suffers from poor framerate and bad N64 controls.

If you rephrased that to "Console FPS," you could maybe make a case, but you obviously never played Half-Life back in the day.

umm no. I may have not realized too much back in the day that Perfect Dark 64 had an awful framerate, but now I do and I cannot play it. I have been playing games for some time now, and framerate is at the top of the list for importance.

Yeah, I can understand Wolf3D since it was the first "proper" FPS. Still GE was important for the FPS genre.
