GE was a pretty important shooter if you ask me. It wasn't the first console FPS to include multiplayer, but IIRC it was the first one that managed to make that component its main selling point. As such, it was pretty much the benchmark for multiplayer in console FPSs until Halo came out 4 years later.

For its time, the focus on storytelling (which is beyond primitive by today's standards) was pretty new for an FPS as well, and it was also one of the first games in its genre I remember including stealth and varying damage point based on where the bullet entered the body. I think it's also the first game to feature a sniper rifle as we still see it in games today.

Sure, GE wasn't as crucial to the development of the genre as Doom or Wolfenstein, but it sure did contribute a lot to the genre, especially to console FPS, and I find its historical mark pretty much undeniable.

It's not even the ninth best FPS ever.It was good for it's time but even then Duke Nukem 3D was miles better.

Perfect Dark 64 was way better, BUT it was held back by the N64 and should have been on the cube.

Perfect Dark 64 was basically Goldeneye 2.0, it was a more refined more feature rich.. And it was one of the first games I ever played on the console that actually could have bots on multiplayer.

Exactly, hence it being the better game :P. I actually prefer the feel and design of Goldeneye's campaign (not the AI and lack of co-op though), but PD64 obliterates it and most any FPS out there today in terms of features. It is really ahead of its time. TOo bad it suffers from poor framerate and bad N64 controls.

Thank god there's an XBLA version that fixes that.

Maybe if you're a moron.

That game has aged very very badly, all the good aspects of it are in modern, improved games.
