Ive played nearly every fighting game that i have heard of or seen.. i've played mortal combat, tekken, virtual fighter, and many many more. They all have a few things in common .. most games besides naruto style games rarely used any items.. in playing these games you always knew when you were going to die due to the biggest difference... the health bar was removed from smash games and was replaced with a % bar that represented how far u could be thrown or knocked off

in smash items gave the game great diversity and added a new complex system to the fighting genre. The game was capable of being played by casual but definately accomodated to hardcore players. Not only did items require precise timing, accuracy, and positioning but there was a way to counter this besides avoiding or blocking the items. any character can could reflect items if they mastered there shield and many characters had counters such as marios cape or fox's reflector or mewto's pyschic reflect. Items greatly helped progress the game and gave the game a feeling that the environment is alive and you can use what is there... moving onto next point of environment.

Yes some games have utilized environmental changes to the level but it rarely effects or has a chance of causing an upset as it does in smash. Level such as pokemon level or brinstar level are levels that change. There are also interactive levels such as kirbys level where the wind blows u or star fox's level where the airplanes interact as well... all making a upset possible... now for the most important factor that gives smash the edge over any other fighting game ... the % bar > hp bar

The % bar adds a whole new level to the fighting genre that has never been matched before. For me personally in games such as mortal combat or virtual fighter or tekken... the idea of knowing if i am hit by anything i will die drives me crazy. in Smash you could die at 80% or u could die at 300%... it all depends on what you do.. doesn't matter how much damage you've taken you could keep going. the idea that you control your own fate is wat gives this game the edge... you could take weak hits all you want as lon gas you avoid the smash attacks/grab attacks/ etc you could live... this is what gives smash the edge..

the replay value for smash (for me) is equal if not greater then halo... hopefully brawl will be online >=)

My god, who's publishing that novel? Sum it up in a nice (insert console name here) sucks/rocks statement.

Personally I think SSB is the 2nd best fighting game ever, after the original MK.

I agree.  Killer Instinct was my big turn on and ultimately my turn off in fighting games.  When I first played SSB, I played for hours on end.  It totally changed the fighting genre and will only play SSB if I wanted to play a fighting game.

Tekken + Soul Calibur shat all over SM from a very high distance.

Infact I'd even go as far as saying Virtual Fighter and Mortal Kombat do aswell.

However I do prefer realistic fighting games than ones with little animals and childish characters.

I don't normally play fighters, but the entertainment which Super Smash Bros brings is what makes me go to it ... it's fun, unlike many other Fighters IMO ...

Smash Brothers Melee best fighting game ever?  NOT true.   I would say Virtua Fighter 5 for PS3 is the best fighting game ever.  Better graphics, textures, gameplay, EVERYTHING out performs Melee.

The reason why I like Smash so much is not that it is different than other fighters in respect that is uses models instead of sprites, percents instead of health, items, a list of different playing styles and game varients, or that it is Nintendo based. The reason I like it is that it is the only fighter that you will win by mastering the physics engine. It is my understanding that most 2D, let alone all, have some sort of physics engine, but smash's is the most fluent in my opinion. I personally haven't played with items in a long time considering that I'm trying to go pro, but they are great fun. Is smash the best fighting game ever? That's an opinion, but one that I agree with personally.

Soul caliber? don't make me laugh. That button mashing noob fest doesn't deserve to be the best fighter. SSBM is imo the best, even though its very easy and simplistic to play, its hard to master, and most important of all, its a tonne of fun, especially with 4 friends.

I disagree, Virtua Fighter 5 is SUPERIOR in EVERY way to SC.  Remember Virtua Fighter 5 is on the PLAYSTATION 3 and is being rendered in FULL 1080P with clearly SUPERIOR textures and graphics.  Also, the gameplay is on caliber of NEXT-GEN with realistic physics and AI.

How much value can I have for a person to even say smash is the best fighter? It's beyond me to see a great game called the best due to it's popularity. Do you even know what the basic concept of fighting is? High, Mid, Low, attacks. Rock, paper, scissors. That is a fighter in which Super Smash Bros do not have. Please do not compare smash to other fighters. You'll only look like the noob you are if you do so.

Why do you keep referring to textures and graphics as 2 different things? As I said before, textures are a part of graphics. It also doesn't help that you actually believe better graphics make better fighting games. Better graphics technology in a fighting game just doesn't improve gameplay in the slightest (not like say an Action Adventure that can use better graphics for more expansive, detailed and interactive environments). AI isn't really all that important either as fighting games are most fun in multiplayer. Also finally, I doubt VF5 is next gen caliber, as next gen wont be here for at least another 5 or 6 years (which gives technology plenty of time to improve).

lol you have some weird idea of what fighting games are about. I'm no fighting expert but I've never played one which has anything to do with rock paper scissors. And anyway, you must be incredibly narrow-minded to bash on smash bros just because it's not the same as other fighting games. I mean, what would have happened if people took that mentality when half life came out: "lol, FPS games are about shoot, take cover, reload. No FPS can have a story or puzzles lol. flop 5.0". I don't think so.

Bash Smash? I called it a great game and yet I bash it? Yes, it's obivous you not a fighter expert to not realize the concept is like paper, rock, scissors. High beats mid, mid beats low, low beats high. I like Smash, but comparing it to traditional fighters is just silly. I expect a general purpose forum to say or do such irrational things, but when I see them I should set them straight. Let's make this clear Smash is a very great game. I'm glad the idea was brought up and hope it will continue to grow; however, lets not get out of hand and compare it to series that have lasted twice it existence.

I disagree.  Virtua Fighter being rendered in FULL 1080P with incredibly realistic AI, physics, and TEXTURES allows for an experience that is second to none.  No game released TO DATE is as ambitious as Virtua Fighter 5 for the Playstation 3.  The developers have taken great strides to make the game a true NEXT-GEN experience and it shows in it's high caliber of work.  It's a true masterpiece in my eyes.  SC is a last gen button masher with nothing really original about it.  The gameplay is VERY generic and it shows.

I think you misunderstood my next gen comment. PS3, X360 and Wii = current gen so people really need to stop using the term next gen for a while. Anyway, I've never really been a fan of VF, I've always much preferred weapon based fighters (of which SC takes the crown) and Tekken. I Also prefer SSB over VF but I personally would classify it (among others) into another genre, party fighters. Anyway those are just my tastes I'll stop being fanboyish now :P.

I would actually call it a party fighter as it is not a "hack and slash" at all. Also plenty of other fighting games involve jumping (aerial combos FTW!) and only noobs play SSB with items.

There's a pretty huge difference between an ariel type combo between say SC vs SSB. You know he's right. And I've never really thought of it in that way. A platform hack'n slack. Interesting way of putting it. Makes more sense. Although having 4 players fighting at once is a bonus.

Only sheep think this and or agree with it.

Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter, and Soul Caliber prove you wrong. I swear Nintendo makes ONE game in a genre and sheep automatically call it the best over every other game.

seeing all the opinions might as well jump in, SSB is one of the best fighters, but overall i'd give the best of the best fighter award to the VF series, then again i didn't start likeing fighting games untill they became 3d and had realistic moves

I came up with the concept back in the first SSB.  It was blatantly obvious.  I fought on this issue with System Wars and Gamefaqs PotD many times.  Fighting games is a game of skill, reaction, and timed comboing.  You can win games in SSB by cheap tricks and collecting items.

Yeah, party fighter is what I usually call it.  It's like Power Stones would fall in the same category.  It's just not THEE fighting game genre.  And it pisses me off because Nintendo takes a genre, kiddifies it with simplistic gameplay and everyone starts to say it's the best game of that genre when it doesn't even fit the category.  I view this the same with those Mario sports games and Mario Kart.  Mario Kart is not a freaking racing game along with Initial D, GT, Forza though I have less trouble proving that since it is more obvious to fanboys than SSB to fighting games.

Actually, the best fighter is either SF2, or VF4: Evo. Even the Tekken series is better than SSB.

Get over yourself man. Super Smash Brothers is an amazing fighting game that is pretty much a different sub genre of fighting like 3D fighters are to 2D fighters. Its good, it takes skill, and no button mashing does not win unless well you are a total rookie at the game. But right now I'm too busy to worry about Smash its all about 3rd Strike, the game I should have played a Decade ago but never realized it.

Yeah playing by yourself in any fighting game isn't fun. The whole point is to play against others for competitions sake.

Super Smash Brothers Melee is a great "fighting" game, but saying it's the best may be going a little too far.But you did include "IMO" in your title,so at least you're not stating it as fact as some people do here.:)

Street Fighter 3: The Third Strike is.

Then Capcom versus SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium

Then Soul Caliber III: Arcade Edition

THEN Super Smash Bros. Melee :)Â
