Ive played nearly every fighting game that i have heard of or seen.. i've played mortal combat, tekken, virtual fighter, and many many more. They all have a few things in common .. most games besides naruto style games rarely used any items.. in playing these games you always knew when you were going to die due to the biggest difference... the health bar was removed from smash games and was replaced with a % bar that represented how far u could be thrown or knocked off

in smash items gave the game great diversity and added a new complex system to the fighting genre. The game was capable of being played by casual but definately accomodated to hardcore players. Not only did items require precise timing, accuracy, and positioning but there was a way to counter this besides avoiding or blocking the items. any character can could reflect items if they mastered there shield and many characters had counters such as marios cape or fox's reflector or mewto's pyschic reflect. Items greatly helped progress the game and gave the game a feeling that the environment is alive and you can use what is there... moving onto next point of environment.

Yes some games have utilized environmental changes to the level but it rarely effects or has a chance of causing an upset as it does in smash. Level such as pokemon level or brinstar level are levels that change. There are also interactive levels such as kirbys level where the wind blows u or star fox's level where the airplanes interact as well... all making a upset possible... now for the most important factor that gives smash the edge over any other fighting game ... the % bar > hp bar

The % bar adds a whole new level to the fighting genre that has never been matched before. For me personally in games such as mortal combat or virtual fighter or tekken... the idea of knowing if i am hit by anything i will die drives me crazy. in Smash you could die at 80% or u could die at 300%... it all depends on what you do.. doesn't matter how much damage you've taken you could keep going. the idea that you control your own fate is wat gives this game the edge... you could take weak hits all you want as lon gas you avoid the smash attacks/grab attacks/ etc you could live... this is what gives smash the edge..

the replay value for smash (for me) is equal if not greater then halo... hopefully brawl will be online >=)
