1080p has been achieved in gaming for a long time nothing new. I remember it never really mattering in the past until now. It seems to me people are now finally enjoying what gamers years ago experience which is nice. These console children are finally getting what the big boys had all these years ago.

I sure more people will begin to brag about 1080p in the future to come.

Well if its been apart of gaming for such a long time it should become the norm... It's 2014... where PC's have been doing 1080p since the launch of the 360 and ps3... Play a game on PC at 1080p for an hour.. switch your settings to 720p and tell me it doesn't look a lot worse.. It should be the norm now.

It isn't. I think the bigger deal is that we were guaranteed it and many X1 games can't run it.

I could care less either way. I am still hoping that someone comes out with a new retro style console with physical media... a huge following of NES-SNES style JRPG's and good platformers being the result.

Because like you said console kiddies are experiencing what the big boy had now that they finally put on their big boy pants. You know how kids are when they are excited for getting something they think is new.

I guess im too spoiled because I like playing and looking at whatever it is in the highest and finest detail possible, whether it makes a difference or not.

All of my tv's are 1080p, and I want all my gaming content in 1080p, forget upscaling anything, I want native 1080p beauty in all its glory.

Interesting I been gaming at 1440p now and been doing 1080p for years. I beat the same people bragging about having 1080p couldn't tell the difference between lower resolution.

1080p is good chunk nicer looking than 720p. Sure from 10+ feet back you wouldn't be seeing all the detail anyways but if there is one thing you can pick out from that distance is the massive amount of jaggies.

Obviously 1080p is a nice goal to have if you have the power to achieve it without compromise. Textures and level design has to be match with the resolution to some degree as well, it would not be very nice to look at low res textures in 1080p, or low polygon objects in the distance. Some ports to PC have been let down by this.

Of course PC has been able to achieve this for years it's on a continuous upgrade cycle, you can't expect 7 year old hardware and to go very far. If you are talking about people saying 720p was enough, then of course they are/were idiots, most people have had 1080p displays for years. 1080p is enough for now, especially for the next 5-10 years. People are not going to flock to buy new TV's quite yet.

Still looking forward to 2k/4k. But only when the price is right.

That totally explains all the 1080p vs 720p threads console gamers have been making the past few months...

I wonder what it's like being back in 2004... Think about that. That was a decade ago. Ten years since 1080 was introduced and about seven or eight since it was adopted. That's a long ass time to be behind on.

Yes, that totally explains why console gamers were talking about how a "tiny" boost in resolution with a few more pixels was no big deal last gen....and now all of a sudden it's all about the 1080p and lol 720p

It isn't such a big deal. Why people get caught up around that i don't know.

What is the problem is the difference between the performance in games between the two consoles and that the best results are coming from the cheaper console. After a generation of lems going on about differences that are literally a fraction of what we're seeing now then you can't blame the cows for kicking up a stink.

And yet all the best games are 720p

Fancy that

Noone, not a singe soul, cares for 1080p or sees even a slight difference between 720p and 1080p

It is nice to see the wild imagination of PC people that try to suggest there is a big one to justify selling their house to keep up upgrading that PC

Everyone else enjoys amazing graphics in 720p or 1080p on PS4 and both are rather fine resolutions

Also i would rather have all games at 720p and better lighting myself

Funny fact no2, the best games around like Zelda LBW and Bravely Default are lower resolution even than PS1 games and as i said before, noone cares or enjoys those less because of the resolution

Wow you keep going on about how pc have had 1080p for ever and yet the games dont really show you much on pc, it isn't about 1080p, animation is going leaps and bounds now, we'll see pc games go alot further but its the consoles which pretty much drive pc games it seems, and anyway pc is only as good as you spend so you can't judge

1. Because you see less jaggies

2. Because every gen so far provided an increase of resolution. The natural evolution over last gen's 720p, is 1080p

3. Because once you get used to a better res, it's hard to go back

4. Because people invest on new platforms expecting better performance

5. Because i got a 1080p TV last year

i could go on...

It's just annoying to see people say there is no difference (or they can't see a difference) in resolution, and now they have it, they seem to notice it.

Frankly 1080p is the standard for the last couple years in HDTV. You can buy 1080p for as little as 300 bucks now. Last gen on consoles HDTV was not standard but we got 720p cheap and consoles that could do that. Now the next gen is here and 4k is the future in the next couple years it will be affordable. Then 4k will become standard. It would be a shame to have your games still stuck at 720p.

As it is even 1080p as standard seems short sighted when gens last 7 years. By 2020 I should have a 4k oled hdtv and be waiting for 8k hdtv's to come down in price. Playing sub 1080p games on next gen consoles is just horrible.

Its important now because one of the three consoles doesn't hit that resolution consistently, and the most insecure group of fanboys love having new cheers for their repertoire.

So is the wii u. You would think 1080p would be standard when these guys were making the hardware for the next gen consoles. By 2016 I should have a 4k hdtv (waiting for the quality and the price and content to be right). Even 1080p is going to start looking dated soon. By 2018 4k should be standard and consoles will be stuck at 1080p tops.

Because as we've entered yet another generation of nearly identical consoles, rather than accept it and talk about the games, we'd rather latch on to any miniscule difference and blow it out of proportion.

The gap is not as small as you think. Any non native 1080p signal would have to be upconverted. Upconversion makes the picture soft and produces image glitches more so on fast moving pictures aka video games. These problems will be amplified when the jump to 4k happens. Now your 4k hdtv will have to upconvert that signal again to 4k you can imagine the issues.

It's does not, but people like to think that it matter. When those who play console games don't understand that if they are sitting more than 6 feet away from their TV their eyes can't tell the differences between 720p and 1080p anyways.

Im not suggesting the consoles are wholy identical, but we're still VERY early in the life cycle of two machines that are still being explored. They are close enough in specs where game development will be as close as we've ever seen in multiplatform games... I think sony will flex some more muscle over exclusives, though that is entirely up to the developers ability.

as for 4k... hmm, you think that'll be the norm a few years from now?

To be honest it's only become a big deal because of comparisons of the main two boxes. It shows that one can consistently out put 1080p games where as the other one is struggling. It then therefore highlights a difference between the two, one being the more capable and the other lagging behind.

If both boxes were consistently outputting 720p games there would be less of a hoo-ha because there isn't seen to be a stronger console.

Obviously most people do not upgrade till what they have breaks. However the price and content for 4k should be there. I would have made the jump to 4k but the standards are not set yet and there is no content. I have no doubt by 2016 all that will be sorted out. More importantly the price of 4k hdtv's are falling fast. A quality 4k hdtv should be hundreds in 2016 as it is a cheap 4k smart tv cost a little over 1k now.

Its a big deal its 2014 and even 1080p is a little old, so that not being standard yet when it was running on PC's 10 years ago is a little disappointing. Most TV's nowadays are 1080p.

I have a 42 inch TV and I sit about 9 feet away from my TV which means that it is impossible for my eyes to detect any difference between 720p and 1080p, so it doesn't matter to me.

I'm sure that for the majority of people, their viewing distance to TV screen size also makes it humanly impossible for them to notice a difference between 720p and 1080p, but they just see that 1080 is a bigger number and want that even though it would not benefit them in any way or they just use it as an excuse to have a fanboy circle jerk.
