I KNOW they don't, because it's one of the stupidest strategies to implement. Unless the shortage is very short and very limited, it has an even greater chance of backfiring than it does of succeeding, because deprivation linevitably eads to discontent with the providers, and discontent leads to a LOSS of demand. Have you ever heard the fable of the fox and the grapevine? People will only wait so long and try so hard to get what they want. After that, they convince themselves that they never wanted it in the first place.mjarantilla

Nintendo is already making more than their yearly predictions with the Wii. They don't need more money than they're already making. It's only smart of them to prolong the popularity of the Wii by creating false demand and buzz around it. They don't want to saturate the market and let their product become just another product.

People may get discontent after a while but they will fall back in love with the product when the next Wii Fit or Wii whatever hits the stores.

By that logic, if MS and Sony made less product, they could sell as much as the Wii, right? People convieniently forget that the Wii outsells the PS3 and 360 combined month after month, yet Nintendo is holding back. My butt.travt-down

MS and Sony need to sell more consoles. Nintendo could but it doesn't need to. Especially since Wiis are so cheap for Nintendo to make comapred to 360s and PS3s.
Nintendo can afford to not sell Wiis now so they can sell more later. MS and Sony can't.

You've got to be joking.

And my theory is the simplest theory: they simply can't manufacture enough boards. How hard is that to understand? Nintendo is under the BIGGEST pressure of all three companies to deliver hardware BY FAR. They're making over three million DSes a month, almost 2.5 million Wiis a month, GOD KNOWS how many Wiimotes a month, and now you expect them to deliver untold millions of balance boards in the span of a few weeks?

Unlike Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft DO NOT OWN their own factories. They have to rely on outsourcing to get the manufacturing capabilities, and even that takes time and money.

For God's sake, people, THINK a bit before you speak.

mjarantilla

lol you actually believe that Nintendo, a company that's been in the business longer than any other can't make enough plastic boards and boxes?

C'mon. I think you're the one who needs to think.

There are store directors, gaming journalists and devs that said they think Nintendo is intentionally not producing enough merchandise. Then there's Nintendo denying and you eating it up.

But Wii fit can't?

Two of the biggest games this gen made sure you could find a copy almost anywhere even on launch day. But Wii Fit is sold out and selling for ridiculous prices on ebay. What is going on here?

Bread_or_Decide

That is not true, it depends much on how high demand is in just your area. I had pre-order GTA IV but didnt get it at launch day.

I have no problem to buy Wii-fit if i wanted to.

Nintendo is already making more than their yearly predictions with the Wii. They don't need more money than they're already making.DireToad

Now you're suggesting that businesses are based on making only enough money as they need rather than want?

Stop staring at your sig all the time. It's making your head go wonky.

It's only smart of them to prolong the popularity of the Wii by creating false demand and buzz around it. They don't want to saturate the market and let their product become just another product.DireToad

It's NOT buzz anymore. Buzz is transitory and temporary, that's why intentional long-term shortages don't work. Nintendo knows, just like anyone with any sense knows, that popularity is its own best PR. People want the Wii because it's popular, NOT because it's hard to find. The same was true of the PS1, the PS2, and the iPod, and it's true with the Wii. If Nintendo wants the Wii's popularity to last, then it is BY FAR in their best interests to make sure that they get as many out there as possible as fast as possible, NOT to cause shortages.

Again, THINK.

People may get discontent after a while but they will fall back in love with the product when the next Wii Fit or Wii whatever hits the stores.DireToad

That's not how it works, genius. Read above.

Guitar Hero III was huge. Plenty on the shelf. With an accessory in every box.

Okay. This is the biggest lie you've told on these forums. Take it back. I looked for Rock Band and GH3 for MONTHS and MONTHS before finding them.

I never said that. I'm saying that it's not nearly as effective as you think. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that the buzz caused by the shortage is about 1/10 that of the buzz that would be created by extreme, iPod or DS-sty1e popularity. There is no incentive to Nintendo maintaining a shortage, so give it up.

It is to get the hype up. Ninty knows people want what they cant find. Just like the Wii still being soldout, they have to be able to meet demand this far into the life cycle. Thats my opinion anyways.

VladTheImpaler

The collective IQ of this place drops every time someone even suggests that companies are intentionally causing shortages. Unfortunately, as people get dumber from listening to the people who made that suggestion, they start to make that same suggestion themselves. It's a terrible, terrible cycle.

If they are not doing it to cause Hype, can you give another reason. It is make fun of other peoples theory's, but do you have one of your own. Companies do this all the time Nintendo is not the only one.

You make money by selling product not hype. It doesn't matter how much demand there is if you don't have the supply to generate revenue for yourself. The goal of a company wheather it Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, is to make money. They can make more money by meeting demand instead of these conspiracy theories of intnetionaly limiting supply. That's why the hype theory can't be taken seriously.

Nintendo went from manufacturing 200,000 wiis a month at launch to more 2.5 million now. For a company that's significantly smaller than it rivals, production takes more than just fllipping a switch, especially when you consider that most of the wii's parts have to be supplied by multiple companies like IBM, ATI, and Ninteno's other technology partners.

Because there was a time when Ninteno needed to stop production of the GC for a few month, they are very cautious when it comes to meeting supply with out having a very embarrasing surplus. The balance board's ability to measure weight and detect movement makes it a pretty complicated pheripheral that's probably more difficult to manufacture than a GTA4 or Halo3 disk or a plastic guitar.

Wii shortages are short. Only idiots with shortages of brain cells believe the ****

If Wii had a high demand, then they would invest in bigger and more manfucturers. The reason they don't is because they cause the shortages on purpose to create more demand from desperate soccer mom's.

PullTheTricker

Dear God, the termites are coming out of the woodwork.

They HAVE invested in bigger and more manufacturers. Or did you miss the 50% jump in shipments they had last month? Or maybe you think it's EASY to convert whole factories to the production of a new product?

Yeah, because they can increase supply at the snap of a finger

Read up on Iwata's Ask where he talks about Wii Supply & Demand. It takes about 6 months to improve production to target. And once the demand is satisfied and Wii sales slow down, it will take another 6 months to reduce the production, so there's a lot of Wiis sitting on shelves and that means less money for Nintendo.

C'mon people, this is stuff you're suppposed to learn in High School.

These people obviously believe in magic, and think that Nintendo isn't using enough "magic". They should send angry e-mails to Nintendo berating them for their lack of creating something from nothing.

When Guitar Hero lll launched I walked into my local store and I saw about 20 or so for each system on the shelves and the guy siad that had more at the back. Same with Rock Band no shortages for me. Wii Fit they had like 5 copies that's it. Nintendo loves playing with demand like I've been into so many stores and I've only ever seen a Wii there twice. It seems to be working for Nintendo and since I don't want a Wii I'm happy.

So by intentionally shrinking supply Nintendo won't have to bring down the price of the Wii because people are still willing to pay whatever it costs to get one?

Wow that is so smart Nintendo!

It doesn't exist at all. The fact that you're not even bothering to counter my point about, oh, ten or twenty posts up anymore pretty much proves that you agree that it's a stupid strategy to begin with.

Price-fixing only works with a monopoly or a near-monopoly, which Nintendo does NOT have.

"Agreements to restrict output. An agreement to restrict production or output is illegal because reducing the supply of a product or service inevitably drives up its price. "

Zip it, haters, you have been owned.

DireToad

So by intentionally shrinking supply Nintendo won't have to bring down the price of the Wii because people are still willing to pay whatever it costs to get one?

Wow that is so smart Nintendo!

"But but it's illegal."
Wake the ^%$# up, morons. This practice doesn't only exist in the videogame industry.

Umm, backward thinking ftl?

HINT, it's illegal, if Nintendo were doing this illegal activity, they would have been fined by now. Guess why they haven't been fined/sued, because they're NOT intentionally holding back supply, if they were, they would have been fined.

Understand? Or do I have to explain further?

Not when it makes no sense to do so.

But, of course, you'll just ignore me because you know I've already shot you down.

I honestly can't believe you said yes... I have problems determining that the sun will definitely rise tomorrow, and you are able to tell what every multi-million dollar company is doing.

Of course couldn't. Its his favourite company from his childhood. Thats what fanboyism does to you. You lose your common sense.

The biggest launch in intertainement history had absolutely no shortages at all. More investment into bigger production doesn't take a whole **** 2 years.

Fanboys calling other people fanboys is irony and hypocrisy at its finest.

The sales of WiiFit have aready nearly doubled the sales for both versions of Rock Band combined. Lets stop comparing those. WiiFit has also outsold each version of Guitar Hero 3.

Who's the fanboy: The one advocating good business practice that leads to greater and longer profit for the company in question, or the one accusing the company of taking part in a business practice that ALWAYS leads to ruin?

I can only guess that your avatar is a self-portrait, because those are some damn big blinders its got on its face.

Well the question was "Do you think" and my response was "Yes".

If the question had been "Do you know" then my response would've been "No".

I can't believe I'm actually going to explain this to you but I can't let you call me a loser like that when you're wrong in this precise situation.

See I was talking with Jandurin right. We were talking about what I think about multi million dollar companies.
He asked me if I thought that all multi million companies had broke the law and I said yes.

He then said that he couldn't believe I was so sure of that.

I then explained that I wasn't sure about it, but that I still think it.

Where exactly did I stray from the argument?
Don't you know how quotes work in an Internet forum? Would you like me to explain to you?

[QUOTE="DireToad"][QUOTE="Jandurin"][QUOTE="DireToad"]They can't sell a lot of Wiis and intentionally shrink supply at the same time?Jandurin
That's correct. How can you shrink supply while having an insanely big supply? They're mutually exclusive.

So you're saying that just because they sell lots of Wiis it is physically impossible for them to not be making more and selling more Wiis?

There comes a point where it becomes unprofitable.

Correct. right now since they are selling at a rate faster than the ps2 it wouldn't be wise from them to invest in factories that would push production to be able to make 200million consoles for this generation. unless that's actually what they predict they will sell which is quite unlikely.

You've strayed from the argument of, "Is Nintendo intentionally causing shortages" by misdirecting everyone's attentions to, in your own words, "what (you thought) about multi million dollar companies."

Get back on track.

Oh wait, no, you can't, because I've already shown you how wrong you are, which is why you've ignored me since I shot down your argument.

Here's a recap:

"I never said that. I'm saying that it's not nearly as effective as you think. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that the buzz caused by the shortage is about 1/10 that of the buzz that would be created by extreme, iPod or DS-sty1e popularity. There is no incentive to Nintendo maintaining a shortage, so give it up."
