What makes this franchise still going and still being hyped as the ultimate messiah of gaming whereas games of similar level of entertainment such as Gears of War had hitherto been met with massive scorn later on, or blockbuster artistic games like BioShock series literally died?

What makes the Uncharted series the ultimate darling of video games that gets somehow manages to be completely bulletproof to criticism of the videogaming industry / journalism "industry"? I know only regular gamers are capable of criticising it, the industry won't. And a bonus question: why do you think making another Uncharted would make a difference now - what do you expect from it?

Nothing we just have a shit ton of cows on this forum. I personally think uncharted is shit. It's one linear path filled with shitty cutscenes, QTE's and bullet sponge enemies. Then there are the "puzzles" which are far too easy.

1. Unoriginal (i.e. every Naughty Dog Game).

2. Linear.

3. Cinematic.. i.e. constantly taking control away from the player.

Primarily it is the casual, the hipsters and the young this game impresses. Older, mature gamers who have had interest of the medium for an extensive amount of time recognize the real pioneers.

Uncharted 4: In game, in engine running on PS4. Still no gameplay footage. Right there I want harsh criticism to hit this game. If that statement was true then something should have surfaced other than a CGI trailer.

The game will make a difference because it will be adding to the anemic choices plaguing the PS4 library.

I expect to be another Infamous or DriveClubz. Hype the shit out of it and be delivered with a empty, broken and boring experience.

Hope this helps.

I would guess it's easy to get into. Personally, I think of the Uncharted games as adventure games with action elements. To me, the XYZ movements seem well-suited to controllers. The characters, locales, and story are okay enough to keep me interested. I love the series.

I wish the next Uncharted will have open-world exploration.

Uhm... Cutscenes and Graphics !

This is also the game that saved the PS3 when cows where starved of any games let alone good ones.

I'd rather play Boob Raider.

Mass generic appeal, safe formulaic story and gameplay elements, linear as **** so even the dumbest of gamers can get through it and feel like they accomplished something, all combined with decent looking graphics for a console.

The thing is the Uncharted games are actually good or above average, just gonna use those two other series you listed as an example. Bioshock 1 was something amazing and resembled System Shock 2. Bioshock 2 what I got from other peoples impressions (since it was the only one I didn't play) was "meh". Finally Bioshock Infinite the game that was hyped so much and when we got our hands on it, it was something totally different and don't get me started on the pos story and boring weapons.

As for Geow the founder of the "bro gamers" series, the first one was pretty decent, the second one was meh at best while the third was a hit or miss for people. Personally the 3rd one was my fav while the other two were meh, I can't say anything about the 4th/prequel Geow since I never played it.

Uncharted 2 was the first I played in the series and it blew me away with its pacing, variety and summer blockbuster charm. It's just a really great formula imo, despite some gameplay shotcomings.

Uncharted and pretty much anything Naughty Dog makes is the bomb. With Uncharted 4 being led by Druckmann and Straley, we've got another 200 GOTY awards game on our hands. They're prepared to once again set the standard in story, gameplay, and graphics. ND has achieved God status and are up there with the likes of Rockstar.

Drake's face alone generates more hype than a new Gears ever will.

Great storytelling, pacing is generally handled well, the shooting doesn't feel like ass and the focus on verticality was a great addition to how damn bland gears of war felt.

Being pretty also helps it be the bell of the ball. Haters gonna hate.

Max Payne 3, now there was a damn movie game. The shooting felt great but how many times that title wrestled control away from the player to tell it's shitty story was abhorrent.

because Uncharted is most likely the only game in this industry that actually blends traditional gameplay with story in a seamless way. And not to mention that the characters go way beyond the tired tropes we are so used to in video games.

Although now we have Tomb Raider that achieved similar things by copying it. The irony is strong I know.

I quite liked the eye-fucking direction in Max Payne 3, I think it added to the overall ironic approach to the story. At first, I was fighting it too - just like you, but then I saw a deliberate decision to it and then I simply gave it in.

I spent half my fucking time with Max Payne 3 watching cutscenes. True, UC 2 had qte's but I don't remember them ever being as invasive to the game as what rockstar did with that title.

And it was such damn disappointment too after how baller the first two Payne titles were. I was fucking pissed.

I think people like the clever writing/humour, high production values and frequency of set pieces.

The gamepay is really damn average. I'd say the firefights are actually below average due to the unresponsive aiming. The set pieces are cool but everything in between is incredibly mediocre.

Tomb Raider 2013 shat all over the Uncharted series from a gameplay standpoint.

I never got it either.

The series is good, but i just can't see it. Ironically, while i like UC more than TLOU, i can understand why that game is critically acclaimed and got 95 on MC. The characters and narrative.

But with Uncharted, it just never felt like it excelled at anything. Sure the set pieces are awesome, and it feels like a summer blockbuster movie in game form. And the whole "movie game" and QTE shit is overblown. There's far more gameplay than cutscenes in UC.

However, it's just that. Standart shooting, weapons, enemies, stealth, platforming, puzzles, story, characters, eveything. Nothing about the games are terrible, creating a well made experience, that's fun and great in it's own right, but nothing amazing. Still, one of my favourite PS3 exclusives.

Hoping UC4 delivers.

Yeah I'm not saying UC isn't guilty of it either, Max Payne 3's were so fucking lenghthly and intrusive that it drove me up the wall. Like how there was quite a few areas where I dived through a doorway for another encounter only to be greeted with a cut scene of bald payne walking through the doorway and then resuming the game play once I was safely behind a fucking crate.

It's like, Rockstar is telling me how to play their fucking game and I didn't appreciate that in the slightest. Most of this shit granted was probably done to mask loading times but it infuriated the hell out of me.

I don't like it at all, but Resident Evil 4 was highly praised for its gameplay at the time of the release WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY HAVING HORSESHIT STORY AND ATROCIOUS CHARACTERS.

Do you really not see how hypocritical that max payne 3 comment is? Go play uncharted 2 again. All the QTE's and cutscenes are sickening.

I thought it was extremely annoying. Walk down an alley. Shot some guys. Cutscene about how you are going to open a fucking door. Kill some guys. Cutscene about more guys coming. kill all the guys. cutscene about leaving the area. The entire game was stitched together with them.

I don't remember UC2's being long just annoying and frequent. I don't like having control taken away from me.

That's probably why it didn't bug me that much, they were fairly quick. I get what you mean about cutscenes and qte's frequently interrupting game play a total shit practice that needs to be done away with however.

It's nothing special to me. The first is boring. The second was pretty sweet. The third was good if you couldn't fall asleep.

@Salt_The_Fries: You are asking a question like this, but I must ask anyone who would ask such a question about a movie, book, music artist, or in this case video game...Did you actually complete all three main Naughty Dog developed Uncharted games? That should answer your question, although at times it seems you are fixated on Sony games and/fans. In this case, you are accusing Sony's Uncharted as as series as a "messiah" and "darling" but you haven't bothered to COMPLETE those older games in question (although you mentioned you did at least play the first game somewhat). If I wondered about Mario, Zelda, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Fable, Uncharted, Infamous, Starcraft, Street Fighter, or God of War...I would just play them. Then, if I still had sincere (KEY WORD sincere) questions, I would pose them after completing the titles. This entire thread doesn't seem genuine or sincere in 2014 as you had ample time to play and complete these games before posing this question. Then, taking into consideration your particular fixation with Sony/Playstation products, it doesn't seem to add up to a discussion worth pursuing.

exempli gratia: I just don't understand why people talk about The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, or Joy Division? Why are they the darling bands commonly referred to by other bands and people? People's first response to you would be to ask if you even ever listened to an entire album? If you haven't, it's a waste of time discussing the pros and cons of The Beatles as you have no CONTEXT to refer to. The same could be said of various authors like Shakespeare or movie directors like Christopher Nolan.

Person 1: Why do people like Chris Nolan's or Quentin Tarantino's Movies?

Person 2: Have you watched any of their movies?

Person 1: No, but I saw a part of one of the movie Inception briefly at a friends house. I also saw a part of Pulp Fiction another day. I don't get why people consider these directors good or why these films are "darlings"...

Person 2: Uhhhh, I'm not going to discuss this until we find some common ground. You may discover after watching these movies you don't like them or you may find out you love them. Until that point, I can't answer your question as accurately as possible until I know you aren't wasting both of our time.

You can't go anywhere with this thread in the same vein. This Uncharted thread is the same case. You haven't done the proper research, you don't own a PS3 nor Naughty Dog's games, so discussing this in length really won't go anywhere. The trolls will be pleased I guess, but is that what you wanted to hear? You want validation from trolls and fanboys?

EDIT: Nevermind, it seems you only played 2007's Uncharted game at some point as you mentioned later in this thread to someone else. Pity. I'll add a follow up post instead.

I never got it either.

The series is good, but i just can't see it. Ironically, while i like UC more than TLOU, i can understand why it's critically acclaimed. The characters and narrative.

But wiht Uncharted, it just never felt like it excelled at anything.

In the TPS genre, what game has gameplay that you would call "amazing", "stellar", "unbeliveable"? So good that it could be critically acclaimed by gameplay alone while having very average everything else?

Well, Vanquish off the top of my head, has amazing TPS mechanics. But weaker than Uncharted in other areas.

My point isn't that, however. I'm simply saying that UC doesn't do anything special in any of it's areas to excell.

Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Max Payne, Watch Dogs, Gears of War, etc, all use shooting mechanics that can match Uncharteds ones. It's the fact that, atleast for me, the games don't do anything special at all.

yes, the sum of it's parts lead to a high quality series, that i like, but is just that. Good, simple, straight forward action adventure game.
