Christmas last year the 360 ended up pushing over 100,000 units a week. That was with few awesome games at the time. This year, i imagine the same will happen only greater. Nobody shells out large sums of money for games consoles and the like in the middle of the summer. That's why nobody releases games in the summer. They all hold out for the christmas period.

This year, there'll be a cheaper 360, Halo 3, GTA4, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, BioShock; all kinds of killer games. Sales will increase hugely and it'll get the momentum it seems to have lost lately.

The Wii is a console juggernaut pretty much demolishing everything. The PS3 is selling like garbage for two reasons, price and lack of games. So whats the 360s problem? The 360 has been selling 'ok' since its launch. It has awesome games, awesome graphics, and is priced pretty darn well for what you get. So why isnt it getting above average sales? The 360 isnt showing anything other than a console that will finish a meek #2 to the Wii. I really cant understand what the 360 can do better than what its currently doing...Carmilla31

Hell they fired the president of the gaming division. Mounds and mounds of well written, respected articles have laughed at the PS3's performancxe at this point

Main thing that stopped me buying a 360 is the Ps3. Its just better no matter how you look at it.

Its kinda a runaway success, just because it isnt beating the Wii doesn't make it not successful, its sold alot and its alot more successful than the Ps3.bri360

I'm pretty sure though if you asked MS if they were happy with the sales so far.........they'd be lying if they told you that they didn't expect more to have beensold already. They even scaled back their projections for this year at the end of last year.

Yeh, I agree with this. I've only ever seen adverts for Forza 2, Gears of War and Viva Pinata on TV, and a few console ads around Christmas. The Wii has so many adverts and sponsors so many shows it's hard not see them. Plus the Wii has the unique selling point, which the360 just doesn't have.

wait.. how is 360 struggling to keep ahead. Its almost doubling the monthly sales of the ps3 hence the gap is wideing quickly.... all my friends, former ps2 owners including myself have moved onto 360.. I dont know anyone that even owns a ps3 or doesnt just laugh at it as the result of it being over priced. Its simply not cool to own a PS3 this gen. The cows are simple desperate at this point as their $600 investment is on the verge of a toilet flush.

Sony wont be the only ones to announce a price drop. Ms will most likely be announcing the elite will drop to the $399 mark. the premium will drop to $299 and the core (if it is still around) will surely drop to $199. Unless MS kills off the core and then begins enforcing the hdd requirement for devs to really use. The 360 is a success in all regions except Japan.

I wonder what the 360 failure rate is in Japan???

Reuters: Mexican Slim surpasses Gates as richest

A Reuters report, citing analysis in the online financial publication Sentido Comun, says Bill Gates is no longer the richest person in the world. His wealth was surpassed by that of Mexican magnate Carlos Slim after shares in one of Slim's biggest holdings increased 27 percent in the second quarter.

Reuters reports that shares of America Movil, the largest cellphone company in Latin America, increased during the period, making Slim $8.6 billion wealthier than Gates, according to Eduardo Garcia, founder of Sentido Comun.

Here's the Sentido Comun article, en espanol, that lists the wealthiest Mexicans and pegs Slim's stockpile at more than $67.8 billion.

Garcia estimated that Gates is worth $59.2 billion, according to Reuters.

That compares with the widely quoted Forbes ranking and estimate of the world's billionaires, which this year put Gates on top with $56 billion. The magazine reported in April that Slim had overtaken Warren Buffet for second place on the list as of March 29 this year, pegging his fortune then at $53.1 billion.

Sentido Comun adds some interesting perspective on the magnitude of the rich-poor gap in Mexico, via Reuters:

Garcia's Sentido Comun, which translates as "common sense," reckons Slim and his family own a fortune equivalent to 8 percent of Mexico's gross domestic product.

For Gates to be worth 8 percent of the U.S. economy, his fortune would have to grow to more than $13 trillion, 17 times his current wealth, according to Sentido Comun.

Update: Reader JJ Rathvon correctly points out that the math in that last comparison is "screwy." Gates' estimated wealth would have to be increased about 220 times to approach the $13 trillion figure cited.

Another update: Thanks to reader Jonathan G., who helps us get to the bottom of the erroneous comparison above. He provides a link to the latest Bureau of Economic Analysis report on U.S. gross domestic product, which was about $13.6 trillion in the first quarter of 2007. So for Gates' to match Slim's 8 percent of GDP for one quarter, he would have to be worth about $1.09 trillion, or about 18 times Garcia's estimate. But then again, that would only be 8 percent of one quarter's GDP

If you want next-gen quality gaming, its either Xbox or PS3, which xbox is way cheaper already. I'm still shocked that Nintendos only charging that much (250) because of the other consoles. Its cute, but i'd only pay maybe 150 for it

If you know anything about the history of consoles you would know that they do not sell in excess until they are at what retail considers to be the sweet spot of $249 or less.

Until the price of the 360 is reduced, the console will just sell ok due to price.

the name. xbox 360. is not going to happen man, sorry. what the hell is a xbox? plus 360? a flop thet what it is.

the games, again not going to happen. crappy ports and 5 hr games, plus 60$ each.

the unique selling proposition? what is ? on-line is bad? hd games ? pc does better. is this the hd option for the creappy pc user?

The 360 needs to find itself in the $150-$199 range for it to sell big numbers. The longer they wait on dropping the price, the better the chance Sony can stay in this race. Meanwhile, the Wii is steam rolling with its $250 price tag.

The price is waay more important to casual gamers/ average consumers than alot of us think. especially with the tighter budgets people find themselves on lately.
