Some of you may know me well, some very little. All should know that I am a hardcore sheep that has slowly been slipping over to the side of the lem, but still keeping my nintendo roots. Hey, if i can learn to respect Microsoft for their games then I think all you haters (you know who you are) can learn how to respect Nintendo.
Like it or not, Nintendo has done a ton since the NES, all of it arguably driving forward the industry or ruining it forever. You probably see these arguments quite a bit here. While Nintendo has had its ups and downs, you cannot deny that they have done more for the industry with their time here then any of the other companies still hanging around. So, we shall take a journey through time and start at the begining.
bit to far there...
Anyway, fast forward to the North American Video Game crash of 1983 where the industry was overrun with devs looking for a quick buck. Shovelware took position over the quality games to cash-in on the boom. America lost all interest and the whole industry went under for two years. Guess who brought it back from the dead. Yeah, it was Nintendo with the NES and Super Mario Bros.
This alone should be enough for Nintendo to gain your respect for them. Without them, there would be nothing...we would be reduced to... *shutter*... books and movies!
It was with the NES that a good 80% of the current genres were conceved. Everything from action games and dungon crawlers (zelda) to puzzle games and platformers (tetris and mario) to shooters and RPGs (metroid and final fantisy) were thought of in the third generation. Sure there is one hell of a difference between Ninja Gaiden 2 and the the original Ninja Gaiden, or metal gear on NES to MGS4... its only natural that games evolve (like every other form of media has evolved). But the game sitting in your so called "next-gen" console right now most likely had some sort of distant relation to something on the NES.
The SNES...well what more can i say to anyone whos been gaming as long or longer than i have, it gave us simply the pinical of 2D gaming, and many of its games still stand up as some of the all time greatest in many gamers books (super metroid, mario world and donkey kong country anybody?)
it became apparent around 1995 that 2-D could only take games so far (though some, me included argue that it still holds plenty of potential) Nintendo moved gaming into 3-D, but even more notible than the hardware shift was how they desided to move though it. you all know the joystick. Its been on every console since. Other controller innovations included rumble and the intoduction of system linking (GBC game pak to n64 game as seen in pokemon stadium for example)
and then we have the Wii, and well the rest is history. The industry was hot on the way to another crash and nintendo fixed that. though some may argue that the Wii IS starting the cycle back at the begining...thats not realy nintendos fault is it?
no that blame is for the third partys that are steadily improving. there lackluster E3 was a tactic...a conspericy as it were, to give 3rd partys breathing room without having big names like mario blocking the way.
Though you all have your own individual feelings towards the big N and there consoles, there is no denying the stuff listed here. Maybe through this thread we can all have a little more respect for the house of mario, or maybe I'm just a crazy sheep without a clue, you reader...get to make the call.
