Some of you may know me well, some very little. All should know that I am a hardcore sheep that has slowly been slipping over to the side of the lem, but still keeping my nintendo roots. Hey, if i can learn to respect Microsoft for their games then I think all you haters (you know who you are) can learn how to respect Nintendo.

Like it or not, Nintendo has done a ton since the NES, all of it arguably driving forward the industry or ruining it forever. You probably see these arguments quite a bit here. While Nintendo has had its ups and downs, you cannot deny that they have done more for the industry with their time here then any of the other companies still hanging around. So, we shall take a journey through time and start at the begining.

bit to far there...

Anyway, fast forward to the North American Video Game crash of 1983 where the industry was overrun with devs looking for a quick buck. Shovelware took position over the quality games to cash-in on the boom. America lost all interest and the whole industry went under for two years. Guess who brought it back from the dead. Yeah, it was Nintendo with the NES and Super Mario Bros.

This alone should be enough for Nintendo to gain your respect for them. Without them, there would be nothing...we would be reduced to... *shutter*... books and movies!

It was with the NES that a good 80% of the current genres were conceved. Everything from action games and dungon crawlers (zelda) to puzzle games and platformers (tetris and mario) to shooters and RPGs (metroid and final fantisy) were thought of in the third generation. Sure there is one hell of a difference between Ninja Gaiden 2 and the the original Ninja Gaiden, or metal gear on NES to MGS4... its only natural that games evolve (like every other form of media has evolved). But the game sitting in your so called "next-gen" console right now most likely had some sort of distant relation to something on the NES.

The SNES...well what more can i say to anyone whos been gaming as long or longer than i have, it gave us simply the pinical of 2D gaming, and many of its games still stand up as some of the all time greatest in many gamers books (super metroid, mario world and donkey kong country anybody?)

it became apparent around 1995 that 2-D could only take games so far (though some, me included argue that it still holds plenty of potential) Nintendo moved gaming into 3-D, but even more notible than the hardware shift was how they desided to move though it. you all know the joystick. Its been on every console since. Other controller innovations included rumble and the intoduction of system linking (GBC game pak to n64 game as seen in pokemon stadium for example)

and then we have the Wii, and well the rest is history. The industry was hot on the way to another crash and nintendo fixed that. though some may argue that the Wii IS starting the cycle back at the begining...thats not realy nintendos fault is it?

no that blame is for the third partys that are steadily improving. there lackluster E3 was a tactic...a conspericy as it were, to give 3rd partys breathing room without having big names like mario blocking the way.

Though you all have your own individual feelings towards the big N and there consoles, there is no denying the stuff listed here. Maybe through this thread we can all have a little more respect for the house of mario, or maybe I'm just a crazy sheep without a clue, you reader...get to make the call.

As much all the fanboys don't want to admit, nintendo is No1 right now with a system that has half the graphics of both PS3 and 360; that deserves a lot of respect in my book.

The Wii has bad graphics, but it still beats the other consoles.

I could honestly care less if Nintendo is bringing gaming to an audience that would never touch it before. So what if they play Wii Sports and music? Does that mean they will be playing Brawl? No. Will I start seeing more people in games like Halo or Team Fortress 2? No. All it's doing is driving Nintendo to serve a bigger table of people looking for a little amusement while leaving those who have enjoyed Nintendo for ages. Sure, they have had games coming out that is a reminder of their old days, but those days are growing further and further away, along with Nintendo's need to bring them back.

When did they "leave those who have enjoyed Nintendo for ages."?

Was it when they released SMG?

Or SSBB?

Or maybe they should have released a new Mario kart!

And what ever happened to Metroid? Why did they stop at 2? Same with Paper Mario!

I can't believe they forgot all those franchies I mentioned above.

So... Nintendo is all good in your book if they only release 2 or 3 good games in two years? No I am not talking about third parties even though those are far few on the Wii. Hey, if you are good with two or three great titles on the Wii in two years, fine with me. I would brather have a PC, 360, or PS3 that have many more including from third parties.

And yet those kind of games are coming out less and less for Wii. Enjoy your Wii Music. What Nintendo is doing isn't helping the core gamers.

Plus they gimped Mario Kart and Paper Mario IMO.

You gamespot members that defend nintendo even now and the future should be ashamed of yourselves. Considering that you all arent casual gamers, cuz casuals wouldnt be a member of gamespot. I assume that you all are gamers that like to play good games and shouldnt defend the way nintendo is doing in the gameing market.

Nintendo deserves tons of respect for what they did in the past and what they are doing now. The problem is the 14 year olds who litter this gaming site will not truely understand "family friendly" for another 10-15 years. When you Wii haters get a wife and kids then you will really understand what Nintendo is doing.

i really like all of nintendo's systems minus the wii. the gamecube was by far my favorite system last gen, even though technically it was the worst, and all of nintendo's older platforms have been stellar. they deserve tons of credit for those. as far as the wii goes, i don't really agree with nintendo's "mission" i guess you could call it of expanding the industry while compromising the core gamer.

I don't see the problem here. Nintendo still makes amazing games. They released some games for another audience lately, yes that's true. But even those were great for them. And don't tell me that Nintendo releases less of their core franchises now on Wii because they have already released more then ever.

Hmm, I guess if you don't like some games from a company then you dislike them all.
But it's no problem for me cause I'm enjoying my set of games I have bought and will continue to buy.

Nintendo deserves respect. I don't know how anyone calling themselves a gamer can have disrespect for Mario, Zelda and Metroid. Those are the pillars of hardcore gaming. Nintendo consistently has put out high quality Mario, Zelda and Metroid games for like 20 years now. And they are all good games. They should have some sort of record for publisher with the longest history of games and highest rated games.

Nintendo is like EA, except EA releases 100 games, 50 suck, 30 are decent and 20 are good or better. Nintendo releases 100 games, its like 80% are good or better, 10% are decent and 10% will go down as the best games released that gen.

yes because you know the other two see you as anything more than a big cartoon doller bill with feet :|

nintendo brought you those products in the first place, and depending on how long you've been gaming, you cannot tell me you diden't enjoy a single one.

Except Nintendo doesn't release 100 games like EA does. Nintendo has released what, 4 great games this gen for the Wii? Mario, Metroid, Brawl, and maybe maybe Mario Kart? EA releases garbage but they release a whole lot more win than Nintendo. You don't have to wait 6 months at a time for EA to release a hit.

Hey, if you are good with two or three great titles on the Wii in two years, fine with me. I would brather have a PC, 360, or PS3 that have many more including from third parties.

Alan

Its a little more than 2 or 3 'good' games. Why don't you list all the 'good' games and time frames that Nintendo did in the past for you? Something tells me you can't and you'll be grasping at straws.

The system has not been out long. So go 'brather' have your other systems.

[QUOTE="D00nut"]I could honestly care less if Nintendo is bringing gaming to an audience that would never touch it before. Sure, they have had games coming out that is a reminder of their old days, but those days are growing further and further away, along with Nintendo's need to bring them back.D00nut

And yet those kind of games are coming out less and less for Wii. Enjoy your Wii Music. What Nintendo is doing isn't helping the core gamers.

Plus they gimped Mario Kart and Paper Mario IMO.

"Oh, those games come out less and less..." Nice crystal ball you have there. Tell us how Nintendo helped the core gamers before that they aren't now. Tell us how the good old days were? can you? Be specific so I can tear it apart.

Nintendo as in first party games has released 3 good games. Mario, Metroid, and Smash Brothers. Zelda was for the GC so that doesn't count. No More Heroes? Last I heard that wasn't from Nintendo (Ubisoft). Mario Kart? Gimped on the Wii compared to previous releases. Whatelse you got from Nintendo in the near two years they have been out?

If you were familiar at all with Nintendo history, they take forever to release their first party games. Also, if you were familiar with the problems of GameCube marketing, they had no momentum and a poor release of games. This time, they are pacing them and doing a great job. This system launched with Zelda.

"Wait! thats a gamecube game! They just added elements and ported it to Wii!" Hey, good observation! Regardless, there is a Wii version. And its already been announced a new installment is in the works! You have your mario game. Those are few and far between. GC only had Sunshine. N64 only had Mario 64. See a pattern?

MP3 is a killer game! Super paper mario gimped? That's your opinion. It had nice fresh gameplay element. What did you want? The same architecutre as 1000 year old door? So then you can complain they don't innovate? Oh, and how many Paper Mario's were there for the GC? How many for the 64?

Nintendo doesn't always do just one game of a series per console, but it seems to be the norm. Exceptions are Metroid and Pikman.

Oh, and Pikman is in the works to. And Kid Icarus. One from last generation and a few generations before.

Mario Kart 'gimped'? Funny, many reviewers missed that point. Plus it has some of the best network of any Wii game.

Who mentioned NMH?

So, how is Nintendo doing anything different than their past gens exactly? Seems to me they are doing pretty much the same each time, but this time they are actually spacing things out a little more wiser than last time.

2 years is NOT alot of time in console terms. Anyone familiar with consoles knows this, especially those familiar with Nintendo. Which I'm surprised that you think you are

nintendo... were so amazing with the N64... they should have kept RARE... the wii would have double the AAAEscrunchUK
Microsoft bought Rare (like tons of other stuff). Nintendo doesnt have the type of money to compete with Microsoft. In my view, they looked at how awesome PD, CBFD, Goldeneye, Banjo, etc were and said "OMG THESE GAMES ARE WIN!!!" so they bought them. They partially screwed up cause most of the Rare FPS team ditched the company during they buying

Infinity% agreed :) and anyone who denies this, is either too young to truely RESPECT and Appreciate what they have done for this industry, or just TOO pridefull to admit it ;) Along with Sega, Ninty is among the GREAT PIONEERS of gaming ;)
