  • Yooka-Laylee has recently stated it's going on GOG.
  • Bloodstained Ritual of the Night is going DRM Free too.
  • D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die Released on GOG the same day the Steam version was released.
  • Over Half of The Witcher 3 PC sales were on GOG.

I know it may actually not seem much, but with the Release of Galaxy over at GOG I think things are changing in the PC space.

We're seeing on Steam and other places. The Steam Summer Sale has just started and we're seeing some Developers start pulling some "shady" practices. And These are not Small time Developers either, Rockstar added Some In game Cash to jack up the prices of GTA V just so the 25% off "sale" price would go down to the base game price.

The Base game of GTA V is not actually on sale, but for a few moments of the Steam Summer sale it looked like it was with a inflated price.

Is this what we want for the future of PC gaming? Steam seems at least to me starting to become like this big cesspool of big 3rd party and small indie publishers trying to get away with horrible business practices and constantly trying to screw over the consumers. I don't want to say that GOG is the right way to go, but what about Humble Bundle? Which also sells DRM free games (as well as Steam Codes, sometimes both) and each sale has some stuff going to charity.

Also having DRM free games means less bullshit from the Publishers and more ownership of the games we buy. That way if something happens to our PCs we still have these games on backup and we don't have to constantly be online to play our games, or verify that we do own them.

So I ask of you System Warriors why not go for GOG or other DRM-Free Sites? Why should Steam have all of the fun? Shouldn't we be asking for more DRM Free Support from Big Name Publishers?

I actually think it should be the future of PC gaming, but realistically we can't have it, because of the fear of Piracy and that's a shame.

GOG is the best place to buy games, period. Steam is just on par with Origin. I only use it when I can get a massive discount.

Damn straight! It's a shame though, because Valve Corporation have a lot of blind worship to a false idol they claim a PC god, Gabe Newell.

I buy gog games and Steam games. It's not as if I would side with one side and buy only from them exclusively for whatever silly reason. However, the vast majority of my library is on Steam, so I don't see myself abandoning it for possibly decades.

I love GoG, it's pretty much the best online distribution service there is. Steam controls the market, but i wouldn't mind GoG growing bigger than it over time.

Steam is a piece of shit. It is only popular because it was the first. Probably the same reason people prefer Xbox Live over PSN..

Steam has the best selection of games out of any digital distribution service and almost all the games I play are already on Steam. Plus I'm just not interested in switching to a different platform right now; it sounds petty but I like my games being in one area unless I absolutely can't get them anywhere else (EA games and Blizzard games, for example). GoG's client is still in beta and while they do offer bigger discounts and truly DRM-free games, it's an issue of their service arriving too late.

I'll still use GoG for classic games, but not for modern games. I bought Witcher 3 on Steam.

So much this!!!

Either way I love GOG been buying games there since day one and I still love it, with the release of their galaxy platform I am sure they will gain more recognition and their game collection will keep increasing. Even then it will be pretty dumb to side with just one store :P

GOG is great for getting DRM-free games, but it's selection is way too limited to replace Steam for now.

Never heard of such a thing! It must be new, I haven't used GOG in around a year. Are they standard in all games, like they are on Xbox, PS and Steam? (I mean new ones, obvs Tie Fighter or whatever won't have them)

I'm considering a GOG account for games I can't get on Steam.

Besides that, if CDP really wants their service more popular, then they need to come up with methods that would rival Steam VERY easily and make more notice of it. I thought of advertisement that would poke fun at Steam, but then I thought that this wasn't the 90's and the last time advertisement bashed something... yeah.

They don't need to, because Valve is Pro-DRM, while CD Projekt Red is Anti-DRM. That alone helps boost performance in games ;)

@nintendoboy16: The whole hostile "call out" ads really need to have something to back them up, or they end up backfiring and looking ridiculous. I think the Sega Megadrive (for example) had enough to back up it's trash talk, not sure of GOG has enough of a selection to justify trashing Steam though.

I just go to where the best deals are and so that's where my money goes, no matter the site (as long as it's legit). Steam personally is just easier to use imo and has MOST games that I am interested in. Though, I don't mind visiting GOG, Amazon, GMG, and Humble Bundle when they have the better deals for games I have interest in.

All GOG needs is a social network like the one on Steam and Steam would dry up. The only reason people tolerate Steam is that it's the only real source for everything PC gaming related and combines it all into one completely unified package.

And Steam DRM is tolerable.

I'm admittedly pretty new to (primarily) PC gaming but I've never even noticed Steam DRM. It "just works", like console DRM, so like that I just accept it.

No DRM is preferable obviously but when it's so unobtrusive will most gamers care?

Agreed, a company that wnats to exploit with mutliplayer only games with microtransactions instead of traditional games ...ala no half-life 3...

As for gog...great service. great prices great drm free and love the extras.

No. People liked XBL over PSN because PSN WAS utter shit. It's better now-PSN+ helped it out a bit but that doesn't give it a pass. The fact that XBL got worse this gen helped it a bit.

As for Steam, I really don't understand how it's a piece of shit, it's always worked just fine. It's not perfect, but I think it more than earned the top spot.

@foxhound_fox: That's not what i meant. Steam functions fairly well, so what exactly is there to tolerate? If you lived in a 3rd world country you may or may not have an unreliable internet connection, in that case it would make sense for someone to "tolerate" steams drm.

The DRM is tolerable only because of the things I stated. If Steam didn't have these features, the DRM would not be worth it.

Sometimes I get logged out of Steam and have to enter a username and password to log back in, which is mildly annoying. It's certainly more annoying than just downloading a game off of GOG and being able to launch it without a client.

@heretrix:

  • DRM, you get banned and all of your shit is gone
  • Worst customer service ever
  • Security is equivalent to a typical Walmart
  • average sale, everything on discount was probably sold elsewhere cheaper (GMG, Humble, Nuuvem, others)

Now sure why people prefer Steam now that GOG is available and it doesn't have any of the setbacks I listed above. The selection is rapidly growing and you own your games. That along with extra bonus contents for most game(wallpaper, soundtrack, artwork, etc.)

GOG is my choice place to buy games. The DRM free games is reason enough for me to choose their service over the rest. My second choice would be Steam.

I prefer G2A, pre-ordered Arkham Knight Premium Edition at £22.95. On Steam at the moment, the base game alone is £34.99, the Premium Edition is £61.18 and the Season Pass alone is £32.99. That's quite a big difference and it was just their normal weekend sales they do.

I hope anti-DRM GOG takes over and forces pro-DRM Steam to lean off DRM.

I hate having to re-sign in randomly due to Steam DRM, I know I don't own my Steam games, and other setbacks associated with Steam. They are lucky they are so established. The crappy Steam sales (in comparison to GMG, GOG, Humble, etc) over the last year(s) should hopefully net more consumers away from Steam. I have hundreds of Steam games and I don't even buy from them anymore. I'm certainly not loyal to Steam just because they've been around a long time. There was a time they offered spectacular deals on games, now their deals are ho-hum in comparison; Steam are not certainly not offering the good-fantastic deals found elsewhere (GMG, GOG, Humble, etc). It's insane when GOG can beat them in price and GOG games do not have nasty ownership issues and DRM.

Cheaper games and better for me the consumer? Yes, please.

No amount of tenure on my part with Steam is going to overlook Steam's "seasonal deals" which honestly have been getting consistently been getting worse over time as they got larger and larger and didn't have to fight to earn our dollar.

I go where the best deal is, and right now and probably the next few years that probably won't be where Steam is, but I'll keep an eye out on their seasonal sales, but I'm not holding my breath in hopes they go back to what Steam used to be with pricing. They also have people so loyal they will pay more money to buy it on Steam. It's crazy. Steam won people over long ago with lower prices and now they have higher prices than other sites but some people are entrenched in Steam's OS.

----

Look at these Steam Sale garbage tactics (and they are effective if you see what's popular, Rockstar's scammy deals are up there on the lists):

GOG is definately the best store now. Steam has been getting increasingly shady. And better deals are usually found elsewhere. That said, Steam's community is so much bigger than GOG's.

Ahhhhhh yeah. Nice, Steam really have become the "walmart of PC gaming" as Steam got larger and larger. People now just see sales and assume those are the best deals because at one time that's what Steam sales meant. Steam used to have some of the best prices ever, but lately, we are seeing some sketchy deals/bundles that aren't nearly as good as what GOG, Humble, and GMG offer.

I nice shuffle of consumers buying away from Steam over time due to way better pricing deals and lack of DRM hopefully force Steam to re-evaluate. I'd like to see their market share decrease a bit, but I'm not sure it will happen because some people I know buy at Steam knowingly just because they are used to it.

Change takes time though, which can be very annoying to wait through, lol.

I want all my games on one client and besides steam is better for everything.

The only game i ever downloaded from GOG is the Witcher 3 and that's because i got the code from nvidia. If it was up to me i would have gotten the steam version even if it was more expensive.

Steam's DRM resembles console gaming to me, which is my origin. I could not imagine being a PC gamer sans Steam. Where will the cool statistics go? The hour logs? The collection would be scattered on my small hdd.

Basically an illogical dependency but it's not something I can or want to control. I need Steam.

However the Terms and Agreement on Steam say you only own licenses to your steam games, no actual ownership.

Why? because GoG offers me nothing....

1) I don't care about DRM, the only DRM that has ever bothered me was window live... just because it barely worked.

2) Steam offers far more features.

GoG is owned by Cd Project Red or partnered arn't they? I'm not surprised... but I got Witcher 3 for like 60% of its price as a pre-order for STEAM via G2A ....

I see no benefit to GoG ... the whole DRM drama is a load of crap.

@LegatoSkyheart why does it matter? what dreaded scenario can possible happen that makes a blind bit of difference? without going full tin-foil hat?

  • DRM, you get banned and all of your shit is gone
  • Worst customer service ever
  • Security is equivalent to a typical Walmart
  • average sale, everything on discount was probably sold elsewhere cheaper (GMG, Humble, Nuuvem, others)

Now sure why people prefer Steam now that GOG is available and it doesn't have any of the setbacks I listed above. The selection is rapidly growing and you own your games. That along with extra bonus contents for most game(wallpaper, soundtrack, artwork, etc.)

Because RIGHT NOW Steam crushes GOG in regards to content. All of those other places just give you Steam keys anyway. I love GOG and will continue to support it ( I bought The Witcher 3 from them to support GOG) but right now and always, content is king and until GOGs library gets up to speed it will always be second tier.

Hey, here's a suggestion don't do shit to get banned from Steam and that probably won't be an issue (unless a mistake is made and I'm sure there will be a way to get your stuff back. I've been a member of Steam since the beginning and have never had an issue. I'm sure if you do some stupid shit to get banned from any of those other places you won't have access to your content either. If you buy something from GMG and your Steam account is banned you kind of have the same problem.

Making up hypotheticals does nothing for your argument. Steam isn't perfect but neither are any of those other places you've mentioned. (I've used them all).
