As a long time videogaming analyst, I am here to explain to fellow gamers on why console gaming dying and the next logical step is phones!

1. Smart phones such as the IPhone, HTC and Galaxy now dominate nearly 90% of the phone market, a market FAR larger than the videogaming one. Think about it, if everyone owns a phone that could play the same games as a DS or Vita, why bother buying a handheld gaming console or a console for that matter?

2. Consoles have already fell behind smart phones in terms of technical processing power.

Take a look at the processing power of a mid market last generation IPhone 4 soon to be replaced by the 5 compared to the Wii

Iphone 4

- 32GB storage space

- Supports up to 640 x 960, therefore 960P

- 1 Ghz CPU

- 512mb of RAM

- 3G wireless support, able to browse the internet anywhere

- Motion sensor support

- Ability to make phone calls

Wii

- 512mb storage space

- 480p

- 729mhz processor

- 88mb of RAM

- Motion sensor support

- Cannot make phone calls

- Wireless internet

As you can see, the Iphone actually outclasses the Wii in every aspect!

Now, let's look at what famous developer John Carmack said about the even older IPhone 3Ghttp://www.engadget.com/2008/08/01/carmack-says-iphone-is-more-powerful-than-a-nintendo-ds-and-psp/

"[IPhone]more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined." now that is power!

You might be thinking I am just nitpicking on the Wii, but no. Does any other consoles support 960P? can they make phone calls? do they have 3G wireless support? No

Yes, I know that the consoles are not meant to be a multimedia tool, but sadly with XBox 360 and PS3's forays into the video player and movies market, they now have to compete with smart phones, which destroy them in everyway.

3. Look at the sales of games in this generation. Wii Sports has sold 76 million copies, this generation. It is the top selling console game whilst Angry Birds on Smart Phones has already gone over the 100 million mark and is most likely the highest selling game of all time. From here we can see cheaper and easy to develop games are the key gamings future.

4. Hip and cool. Seriously, look at any Smart Phone ad, it features something that gamers cannot get at. That is women. Women are the source of every gamer's envy. That is what all gamers want and cannot get. Smart Phones are just far cooler than consoles. When you think of a smart phone, you think of clubbing parties, something that no gamers get invited to. Then when you think of consoles you get Easy Mac and fat guys on couches, a social disaster. If having a smart phone or gaming on one will not decrease your chance of breeding then this will be by far the biggest factor in Smart Phones winning the system wars.

5. Cost of games, look at Smart Phone games such as Fruit Ninja, a game that can provide up to hundreds of hours of fun. A game that is different on every playthrough with online leaderboards. Surely, just from listening to such description you'd think this is a $50 dollar AAA game? No, it is 99 cents. Now, look at COD: Black Ops, a 6 hour campaign with bland multiplayer for around 50-60 dollars. Which is more economical, which one is going to suck up the market? Easily the smart phone game.

This is just my opinion, but my opinion is quite heavily weighted towards being right as a person who has great insight into the industry. I was able to predict the Wii's rise and Nintendo's revitilization and I believe this next prediction is even more likely. Except it might happen in a decades time perhaps and not anytime soon.

Thank you for reading!

The nay-sayers are always going to say nay.. I'm wanting to get an iPad for a few games already....they look pretty good. Although I am a hardcore Android fan and a Apple-hater, I really have to say that mobile gaming will be more common for a long time on Apple iOS. There are too many different configurations of phones for Android. Apple is more standardized. Every year, a more powerful iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch is released. So its easier to have a min bar and develop for it and upscale to the more powerful iOS products.

You also got a few specs incorrectly and you are trying to compare Apples to Bananas. The Wii and iPhone have different architectures silly...

If there was a phone that could do everything that a PS3 or 360 could do, and I could hook it into my TV, and I could use a controller with it, then I wouldn't bother with a console.

You won't be saying that when Legend of Zelda: Mobile Sword comes out. Look at the possibilities, it expands gaming to a bigger market than anything seen before. This is the chance for gaming to become mainstream.

Beyond the buttons issue, here's another question: what portable gaming device will young children use?

I started using a Gameboy when I was 5 years old. Can you imagine giving a 6 year old kid an expensive smartphone for gaming?

Game has already become mainstream and I highly doubt we will see Zelda: Mobile Sword unless Nintendo launches their own Smartphone. The problem with Smartphones is that they are expensive and often require a contract to a phone company and a data plan, all of that together can be quite more expensive than say the 3DS or the Wi-Fi version of the Vita. Moreover raw processing power does not instantly translate into better graphics.

Zelda will not go Mobile. Nintendo already said that Pokemon is the only one of their IPs that is going mobile and that is because Nintendo only owns 1/3 of the Pokemon IP. Game Freak and the Pokemon company also both own 1/3 of the IP each resulting in a 2/3 ownership of the Pokemon IP between Game Freak and The Pokemon Company.

Why does gaming need buttons? Did the original Pong have buttons? No, it had a stick. It will work perfectly without buttons, as with touchscreens, the possibilities are endless. You can simply map buttons onto software.

Pong still had a joystick you could grab, you could feel it. There was a tactile response. You don't get that with a touch screen.

But I think another reason Phones wouldn't replace Consoles is because Subcription fees and you need to have a contract. Most of the better phones are going with AT&T and they are terrible in my area.

The higher sales numbers are due to the lower cost, not a reflection of the desirability of the mobile interface.

Street Fight IV had the exact same features on IOS and it's console counterparts. It was just priced cheaper, price is not a measure of quality but merely a publisher's greediness. Please do not insult me with words such as 'dolt'.

Yep. The experience of the 360/PS3 is essentially having three AA games, in the entire library, playing on a 3.5" screen, providing each eye with an awe-inspiring 400x240 image.

...I kid, I kid. I like the 3DS. I don't think it's going to be replacing home consoles anytime soon.

This is not about replacing. Did humans replace neanderthals? In a sense yes but they were not done by force as you had described but through mere evolution. We humans are evolving to this very day and everything does as well, that includes gaming. Therefore it it not going to forcefully replace it, I did not say people we going to sell their PS3s and buy a phone. They already have a phone. They can choose to ignore the console and play on the phone. There are no such mobile games that cost $60. With the expansion of the market, this means great market competition and therefore more consumers which will increase the demand of games. Thus more developers will enter the market. Not only will standard of gaming rise but prices will drop dramatically. Simple economics my friend.

Bu... bu... bu... no buttons... Gaming on phones is pretty sweet, ill admit. I have an iphone. But i barely play games on it. Its either play games or be able to make it through the day without charging. I dont see serious gaming on phones til 2 things happen. 1.) Standardizing of Android phone specs- Like mentioned above, iphones are upgraded every year or so but any company can make an android phone. This is androids double edge sword. It allows for more people to buy an android phone but doesnt mean that they all are equal. Once they start making standards for android phones thats definitely gonna help. 2.) Multiple day batteries- (This is coming from my perspective as an iphone user, I do not speak for any android phone) The iPhone 4 battery is just not long enough to last after playing games for more than perhaps 30 minutes. Once the batteries start lasting for much longer, gaming seems more feasible.

Phones and tablets won't really replace consoles, well certainly not home consoles anyway (although portables probably) it will be the TV systems that have proper game functionality built in that will replace consoles, like the rumored proper Apple TV that will have all the current Apple TV features and services as well as things like the App Store built in.

Imagine future TVs with the kind of services like iTunes, OnLive, the App Store, Netflix, Youtube, Facebook, a web browser, etc all built in...

Why would you ever need a dedicated home console if you had one of those sitting in your living room as a matter of default?

In the future I think rather than dedicated home consoles and portable consoles you will mostcommonly see people have a combination of the new age TV (basically PCTVs), a smart phone and a tablet. Those are going to be the ubiquitous lifestyle devices of the foreseeable future that the vast majority of people and households are going to have.

I actually studied evolution a great deal in college, and every single encounter between neanderthal and man, man killed the neanderthals in a manner best characterized as 'forceful'.

Evolution is fuelled by death. When this death is widespread, it is called an 'evolutionary event', which is essentially environmental pressures that ultimately kill members of a given species. In the case of neanderthals, the evolutionary event was us, and our desire to kill them all whenever we encountered them, which sadly, we did. Evolution is brutal stuff, not some passive etheric force that gently guides the progress of life from afar.

It's sad because neanderthals had bigger brains and were more physically robust than us, but they lacked one critical feature: a larnyx. They instead had throat pouches similar to that of gorrillas, thereby making high level communication impossible. Anyway, I'm not refuting the point you were trying to make about mobile gaming (in this post, anyhow). It's just that your innacuracies concerning the nature ofevolution really stuck in my throat pouch.

Its not quite as unlikely as people think it is honestly. Wasn't there a report saying 40% of console gaming was lost to the I-Phone?

Yet consoles are still selling better than ever.

It's more of a threat to portable gaming devices than consoles.

The problem with that is no developer is going to want to spend millions of dollars on a development budget to make something like Halo, Zelda, or Uncharted and then sell for only $10 or less, and the mobile phone market would not want to pay $50 to $60 for a AAA budget title. Phones will never replace dedicated gaming devices, even handheld consoles. If Vinyl is still selling well, if e-Readers and still selling well, and if movies and books are still selling well, I see no reason why phones would replace anything other than your old phone.
