I don't see smartphones replacing consoles. But I do see the handheld market taking a huge hit from smartphones. I know I can't wait to get my money so I can get the HTC Evo 3D. I pick it over the 3DS. The Evo 3D and the Vita will be my two handheld gaming devices.

SakusEnvoy

Think I'll opt for an LG Thrill 4G myself, since I'm stuck on AT&T. Heard the pre-orders are going for only $79 at Radio Shack this week.

Well that's awesome for you. I am getting the Evo 3D through Newegg.com because it is $179 instead of $199, plus going through Newegg, I get the activation fee waved. So I am getting the Evo 3D for me and the Evo Shift for my girl and her phone will be free. I can't wait to get games for it either. Games for smartphones are so much cheaper. $79 is a great deal. Hope you enjoy your smartphone as much as I know I am going to enjoy mine. Going to be neat to basicly have a PC in the palm of my hand.

Yet consoles are still selling better than ever.Randoggy

Of course consoles are selling ;)

I was just giving people food for thought there because despite sounding absolutely ludacris there could be something more to it. I don't see them killing consoles but really in a world with corporate greed and companies so eager to get their gadgets in your hands who knows what the future holds?

But at this moment in time I would say no. Consoles are not going anywhere.

The problem with that is no developer is going to want to spend millions of dollars on a development budget to make something like Halo, Zelda, or Uncharted and then sell for only $10 or less, and the mobile phone market would not want to pay $50 to $60 for a AAA budget title. Phones will never replace dedicated gaming devices, even handheld consoles. If Vinyl is still selling well, if e-Readers and still selling well, and if movies and books are still selling well, I see no reason why phones would replace anything other than your old phone.

DarkGamer007
You don't seem to grasp the logic of more sales is more money. I'm sure developers would rather Halo have 100 million Sales at $10 a piece then 1 million sales at $50 a piece.

This is one of the most ridiculous statements I think I've ever heard. Seriously, the closest thing phones would replace is handhelds.

Phones won't replace consoles.

Something that does both will replace phones and consoles. But that's looking too far into the future.

I don't have enough time to go over all of your rediculous statements, so i'll say something everyone else missed.

iPhone is 960x640.

That's 640p, 640 horizontal lines in a progressive scan.

Consoles offer 720p, which is 1280x720.

Learn to understand resolution.

What about the fact that you have to have a contract to use the phone.

I don't want to have a contract to game.

I would rather just purchase the console and not have to pay anymore extra money just to play the system.

Also Smart phones usually costs more then Consoles at first then you have to have a contract to be tied to a horrible service because most of the good phones are going with AT&T and they have terrible service in my area.

ill leave it for the farmville gamers, thank you

You won't be saying that when Legend of Zelda: Mobile Sword comes out. Look at the possibilities, it expands gaming to a bigger market than anything seen before. This is the chance for gaming to become mainstream.

gaming is mainstream. black ops has made more money than any film in history besides maybe avatar. how are people going to play cod and halo as we know it on a phone? bluetooth controller and a special helmet that holds the phone 2 inches from your face? get real

Also Smart phones usually costs more then Consoles at first then you have to have a contract to be tied to a horrible service because most of the good phones are going with AT&T and they have terrible service in my area.

People don't buy their smartphone with the exclusive intention of gaming, though. They buy a smartphone for its other features, which usually justify the contract and the monthly fees. I mean, not everyone will agree -- some people will stick to dumbphones -- but the smartphone market is growing like crazy.

And despite the fact that big hardware upgrades are released every year, the average smartphone game will still work on weak hardware/old smartphones. Most iOS games are still designed to work all the way back to the first iPhone 2G in '07.

Upgrading a smartphone is also really easy, and usually costs no extra money. If you buy a contracted smartphone for $100 in 2008, and decide to upgrade in 2010, you can usually sell your old smartphone for $100+ on ebay/gazelle/electronics trade-in store because people are willing to pay that kind of money to get an out-of-contract phone. So, in 2010, you essentially get a new phone with better hardware for free.

What a hilarious argument OP, unfortunately everyone knows you are far from being right. Consoles always walk over the gaming capabilities of a phone. No one wants to sit down and play a phone game in all of its high quality glory because they all are basically crap. I'd take a PS3 game over any iPhone game.

Furthermore, you should be comparing an iphone to a 360 or a PS3 because the wii is just barely even in the same category. Honestly the games are what's important and I have zero faith that a phone will ever top the excellent games being put out by the current consoles.

Maybe phones will replace handhelds, but I'll defend them with my last breath. You simply do not find quality games on Phones, and it requires internet, a new phone and a charge to your bill. Not something I wish to be a part of.

[QUOTE="ManicAce"]Show me a gamer who would replace his console with a phone, then show me the gamer who'd pay $60 for a mobile game.Olimar_the_Min
This is not about replacing. Did humans replace neanderthals? In a sense yes but they were not done by force as you had described but through mere evolution. We humans are evolving to this very day and everything does as well, that includes gaming. Therefore it it not going to forcefully replace it, I did not say people we going to sell their PS3s and buy a phone. They already have a phone. They can choose to ignore the console and play on the phone. There are no such mobile games that cost $60. With the expansion of the market, this means great market competition and therefore more consumers which will increase the demand of games. Thus more developers will enter the market. Not only will standard of gaming rise but prices will drop dramatically. Simple economics my friend.

Angry Birds was downloaded hundreds of millions of times, yet didn't make nearly as much money as the top console games, you need a high price point to fuel high production value games, and until mobiles get that the best experience will be on the big systems. That is why gaming on phones, while popular, will never replace consoles(which is the topic title btw).

There was a showing of some cellphone with Nvidia's new Kal-El cellphone processor, hooked up to an HDTV and running Lost Planet 2 1920x1080 at medium, 30-40 fps. I'm not following smartphone tech, but how long untill you can connect keaboard/mouse to that, efectively making it a powerful gaming device wherever there is a screen and kb/m available, while providing cellphone versions of those games everywhere else?

never gonna happen. know apple and other cell phone companies wish it were true but it's not. now no doubt mobile gaming has increased in the last 5 years due to smart phones becoming cheaper and more available but it will never replace consoles. an iphone doesn't have the graphics compatibility and power that a console has. and games on iphone and other smart phones drain your battery quick.

Sorry but no. Considering the video gaming industry (whcih console gaming takes up a large portion of) is bigger than the music industry and I think has surpassed the movie industry also, phones will never replace consoles. People like to game way too much on their consoles and even if people need phones, I feel like a console be it 360, Wii or PS3 is much more appealing than an Ipad to most people.

Do you have the link? I have http://www.nordichardware.com/news/69-cpu-chipset/43349-nvidia-kal-el-runs-lost-planet-2-on-android-tablet.html

This "Lost Planet 2" version seems to be like running on low settings.

Kal-El's 12 CUDA core is lower than NVIDIA ION's 16 CUDA cores.

LOL at quad Intel GMA 600 setup vs AMD Xenos.

My tablets's Radeon HD 6250M smacks Intel GMA 600 several times over in 3DMarks 2005/2006.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-GMA-600.31181.0.html

Intel's PowerVR 535 (aka Intel GMA 600) runs at 400Mhz while normal PowerVR 535 runs at 200Mhz.

Sony Vita runs quad PowerVR 543MP4 setup i.e. quad PowerVR 543 cores at 200Mhz. According to Imagination Technologies, multi-core PowerVR 543 scales 95 percent.

"Yes, I know that the consoles are not meant to be a multimedia tool, but sadly with XBox 360 and PS3's forays into the video player and movies market, they now have to compete with smart phones, which destroy them in everyway."

this is where I stopped reading:roll:

how does it "destroy them" when the consoles can play movies in 1080p and the smartphones CAN'T? Can you shove a bluray into a smartphone?

and please show me one smartphone game that "destroys" Gears or Uncharted, it's actually quite the opposite. No phone game even comes close to the type of experience that a $60 AAA console games can give.

You're talking about very cheap games compared to full big budget releases. You really are a dolt aren't you.

Street Fight IV had the exact same features on IOS and it's console counterparts. It was just priced cheaper, price is not a measure of quality but merely a publisher's greediness. Please do not insult me with words such as 'dolt'.

Super Street Fighter IV iOS edition does not have exact same features as with Xbox 360's version i.e. basic backdrops.

For example,

SSFIV iOS edition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86W8btl3Q-E

SSFIV PC edition running on AMD C-50 APU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTIVoFJmfqwNotice the backdrop detail difference.

PS AMD Z-01 APU is just lower power version C-50 APU.

I don't think consoles will drown but this is precisely why I think MS is going to be next to bow out. They are like Sega was at this point.

Nintendo have said Apple are a threat. Phil Harrision (who should actually be taken more seriously now his arrogance has calmed down) has said it. Analysts have said it (including TC). Top studios have said it and while consoles are likely not going to die (PC gaming isn't over) its had an effect on consoles anyway because its taken a large chunk out the market.

I think MS is going next because (like Sega) they are so focused on the competition in front of them they won't see Apple coming. Sega was so focused on trumping Nintendo it didn't see Playstation coming.

Phones will not replace consoles since they are different markets altogether. Phone games are a race to the bottom for the most part--make a cheap game for a cheap price and sell millions of copies. Rather than getting the best games available you get a game that is good for $1 - $10. Games like Street Fighter IV that supposedly have all the same features? Actually the newest version has less than half the characters as Arcade Edition, only has 4 buttons, has laggy online play, doesn't support a proper arcade stick, less modes... The console version is a lot more expensive, but comes with better controls and several times the content.

I am quite sure Barbie Horse Adventures is not available on smartphone. In other news, it is available on PC, the most 'hardcore' of systems.

No controlls.

No big screen.

No long battery when you play.

Not playing a whole campaign on a phone.

Silly Angry Birds is barely a game.

I've got an Xperia Play and it's good but no where near consoles.

A longtime video game analyst, huh? That's a little amusing... Anyway, the iPad, iPhone, iWhatever will only be good for when you want to game on the go. At home, I think most people will still prefer to play games on a larger screen with a better control scheme.

To everyone who says that phones aren't already becoming more like consoles than you know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onltE7Qkgm8

Some Droids like Droid X have HDMI out, and you can play emulators and media through your big screen television. Some of these paid emulators from the Android Market even have Bluetooth support with the Wiimote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwJQIoQ9rRQ&feature=related

I wrote a blog on this a while back, and I agree.

People's sole objection to the idea will fall under three categories. Performance, buttons and platform loyalty.

They don't consider that consumers as a whole don't care about performance, so long as the game offers a enjoyable experience. That it's possible for them to use their game pad of choice with a mobile phone, and that game pad add-ons can be developed. Platform loyalty prevents people from considering what's actually practical.

Gaming as we know it is going to hit a cost wall, and developers alienated from the high cost traditional markets will be looking elsewhere.

Glorified flash games? The market is young, but give it credit.

I don't understand how and educated long time market analyst can so easily confuse and mess up his consoles and words in the original post(For instance HTC and Galaxy(which is Samsung, TC). Both these brands of phones run Android as their choice OS). Doesn't make sense unless it's just a 10 year old kid trying to start a flamewar. This is also supported by the FACT that the entire OP is full of cliche and stereotypes about gamers.

Since when are girls the envy of gamers? Gaming target audience is mostly married men so already TC is so wrong it's ridiculous. I'm a good looking athletic guy, girls literally swoon over me and I'm also a hardcore gamer. While I may not be describing ALL gamers I just had to say that I believe MOST gamers are guys just like me. Just regular guys that you wouldn't even know they were gamers till you seen their living room or game dungeon.

And as probably 100 people have already said, no buttons.

EDIT:I forgot to add that game developers won't allow the Iphone or Android to overtake the modible market. Games are too cheap on the systems. Even Angry birds devs barely made any money off their 100 million+ copies sold. The 3DS is just doing to badly because Nintendo loaded it with gimmicks and hasn't released a single good game that isn't a re-hash of a nintendo 64 game. Also, most people probably just think it's a normal DS with a 3d screen, Nintendo would have done well to go with a name change for this handheld to show the consumer that it is, in fact, a new system and not just a different name like they've been doing for years.

And I've already said you can use a wireless game pad, or there will be 3rd party add-ons.

And I've already said you can use a wireless game pad, or there will be 3rd party add-ons.

WHich will then leave you at the mercy of the developer. Not all games will support these pads, hell a lot of game don't even support the xperias built in game pad. You're also still stuck with a tiny screen unless you have an Android device with HDMI out but sadly most of the better mobile ga,es are IOS only. Care to give this another shot?
