TLOU was a new IP, as well as being refined and without significant flaws.

The problem with sequels is that they are often derivative and no matter how good they get, they don't nearly have as much shock and awe as the first entry because they've already seen it before.  It's not impossible, but it's really difficult to both have the shock-and-awe AND to have a refined game.

For example, there are many new IP's which could have EASILY been 10's that blew everybody a way, had it not been for flaws.  And it's natural for new IP's to have some flaws.  Nobody's perfect and it takes time.  No matter how many sequels you make.  No matter how much you improve later on, it won't take away from the fact that the developer missed their chance.

LA Noire - Awesome game, brilliant concept and ambiance, but a predictable formula for cases stopped it from being a perfect 10

Mass Effect - If the weapons, inventory system, bugs/glitches, vehicles, and pacing in some parts had been fixed, it would have been one of the greatest games of all time.

Borderlands - really effective hybrid, but it had way too many flaws.  if it were blands 2 that were released in 2009 (which fixed all the flaws: color/environments, story, enemy variety, etc), it would be mindblowingly good.

Assassin's Creed - ACII was much better, and it is a successful series though.  This is an example on how to recover from mistakes from a new IP.

But back to my point.

TLOU is a rare case (like Halo) which was totally new and left the player without them feeling like something was missing.

TLoU owes its success to 3 things ND, the walking dead and the declining quality of resident evil games.

i personally prefer Resident Evil 4 over TLOU, but even if RE5 and 6 were as good as 4, The Last of Us would still have it's place in gaming.

It's easy, but it takes a lot of cash--a lot of cash that most devs and publishers just don't have.

If they don't have the cash it should be easy to get investors. If all the investors have to do is to pay for marketing to make a great profit they should be lining up.

Investors won't invest in something that might not make any profit. Commercials need production values and they need to appeal to a wide range of audiences; some might even do this, but most publishers don't want a cut of their money taken from them every month, either. Some games do this--look at Saints Row 4 and the like. But most devs/publishers just can't risk it.

What do you mean "might not make a profit"? You said all that was needed was marketing to sell a lot of copies, so it's a safe bet. Ofc the publishers would prefer to not bleed any money, but given how easy it is to sell milions with just markeing they kind of have to go with it.

Simply spending money into marketing, and actually having good marketing are two different things.

And because it was hyped and marketed to death by Sony. It was on TV every 15mins.

Bioshock Infinite was also marketed and hyped to death as well. Which is why the game sold millions to and got a great score.

Far Cry 3 wasn't marketed as much, but the game was also very good and it too sold well.

True those games weren't new IPs. Not all new IPs do that well. PS All Star Battle Royale did terrible.

TLOU was a new IP, as well as being refined and without significant flaws.

drekula2

It seems silly to call it a new IP when it's yet another combination of popular generic "AAA" game design elements from an already popular developer.

-Boring third person cover shooter.
-"Escort" a young woman/girl who's basically a non-entity during actual gameplay.
-Whack-a-mole shootouts.
-QTEs.
-Gritty/organic art style.
-Zombies.
-Over-emphasis on high production values and cutscenes.

And the game has the significant flaw of being boring and tedious as shit.

it's all relative.  3 million, for a new ip, at the end of the generation, in a matter of <6months.

how many games do you know of that meets those specifications?

A "Flop", as defined by System Wars, has absolutely no bearing on a games success.

It's like we have crazy SW reality where one reviewer determines a games worth by a random score and then we have real world, it sold millions and on a short list for GOTY, reality.

What reality do you live in?

I don't think The Last of Us is the best thing ever but this is a really dumb post. You're over simplifying the game to ridiculous levels. If you find it tedious and boring (which the first few hours certainly are), that's fine but all that other shit. The game doesn't play or feel like a cover shooter. There's shooting and cover but it doesn't really play that way. Perhaps it does on lower difficulties so I may be wrong. It really does offer a lot more than other generic AAA games especially in the way of narrative which may not be every gamer's biggest interest but it can't be ignored. To say, it's not a new IP because it shares similiar mechanics to other games is incredibly stupid though.
