I'll give you a anti-flamage pair of glasses, so that you can still enjoy your PSN 3D trophies
Here are my unbaised reasons why XboxLive is a ripoff, this is from a PC gamer's point of view.
1. XboxLive Doesn't have dedicated servers- People have been complaining about the lack of dedicated servers in major games like Gears of War. And the server host lag advantage. And for a major game like GeOW, there's no dedicated servers? Why? Where does your money go then?
Better_Day21
I stopped there. I can tell the rest was
I think i'll buy PS3 so I can play Virtua Fighter 5 onlin...wait thats right I can't. But on the "rip off" I can.
I guess thats where my money is going to.

-Even PS3 games like Warhawk has dedicated servers and up to 32 players per server, what does Gears have, 4 players?
So you're paying for a service that can only support up to 4 players, and laggy online. When you can get 32 players and no lag with the PS3?
2. Everything on Xboxlive, you'll get with PS home. Leaderboards, achievements, communities and online play, and get this, all of it is free! With Xboxlive, you pay just so u can see some numbers, which M$ calls achievements? While on the PS3, you can actually see your trophies displayed and rendered in 3D.
3. If you think $50 is not a lot. If you bought the Xbox360 since launch, you already paid $100 for online. That's 2 years. And in 4 years, you'll pay $200, and if u keep the console for 6 years, it's $400!!!...that's the price of a brand new console.
4. If you're Xbox360 breaks at any time and you have to send it in for repairs, you are basically paying for an online service that you are not recieving since u can't play your Xbox360. And since you pay the $50 up front, u can't get any of it back, you're service is just wasting away while you wait for the 360 to get fixed.
So you're paying for a service that is laggy, doesn't have dedicated servers, and sometimes you can't even us the service.
On the other hand Sony's online Home service has superior everything, including Demos, trailers, updates, online play with dedicated servers for free!
When you look at it that way, Xboxlive looks like it's a real rip off. Better_Day21
read all the bold letters and you claim this a not biased thread?....
This Thread is a Rip-Off, FACT!
The real rip off is that your paying 50$ for a P2P online play service... some people might be ok with this because of the leader boards and stuff like that... but it's still kind of funny really... Your paying Microsoft so that you can use something you already bought from them, with your Internet service (which i assume you pay for) to act like a game server... Why should you have to pay them to when nothing in the system actually belongs to them? GundamGuy0How many games have you paid for that has never lived up to your excpectations. Live cost the amount of a game, and gives you only good things. Wow, $50 for live, but you'll drop $600 on a console that cant even display graphics as good as a console $200 cheaper.
you talk about gears only having four and warhawk only having 32. If thats what you want " numbers" then research a little game called HUXLEY.akuma303x
Huxley is an mmofps...but that doesn't really matter since this topic has failed in 1 paragraph (not to mention all others XD ).

I don't own a PS3. But besides that, Live is great... But I don't see why Microsoft should be payed for it... Your using your own internet connection, your own bandwidth, your own game, and your own 360 as the game server... Where does Microsoft factor into that?

I think Peter Moore once explained WHY people pay for Xbox Live but I can't remember where I saw the video though XD
I'd like to know too, all I've seen is flamming but no answers. You don't have to pay a monthly fee for microsoft to require all games to have online components...so where does the money go to?

Me neither. Where are the reasons? Can anyone please write some reasons as to why people have to pay for it?

I don't really care either way on what people think is a rip off or not, it's cheap so I guess it's relative.
Anyway I wanted to point out this part. You're not unbiased, no one is. Almost everything you say is backed by partial judgements and past instances of knowledge. You pointed it out yourself that you speaking as a PC gamer, which means you're using your bias.
Bias isn't bad, it's natural. We're not clean slates.
You don't have to pay to see those little numbers called achievements.hawk2416
Or leader boards.
Just online play

No one wants to pay 50 dollars for something they've had for free for years. Compared to PSN, it may or may not be worth it. I'll leave it up in the air. The marketplace is bigger, leader boards and achievements are out now, and it has a more accessible friends system. How many of those advantages are actually worth money? Can't i browse online products on my pc for free (more demos are nice i suppose), and are leader boards, achievements and a slightly better chatting system worth the price of a game a year? no.
What you do get is more online enabled games, but from the looks of it, developers are starting to need less convincing to bring their games online, and this advantage will leave the xbox pretty soon. The saddest part is that some PS3 games have dedicated servers. The discussion then becomes quantity over quality. W/e floats your boat.
No matter how you slice it though, compared to the PC, it's a total and complete rip off. Dedicated servers are all over the place in most PC games. You can get Xfire and other free programs to do cross game chatting. With XBL you're essentially paying for an inferior service. You really have to question in the end...What in the heck are you paying for? Why does XBL cost so much to maintain? Sony fails to bring the PSN to a level of online gaming equivalent to the PC's. XBL does the same, yet charges for it?
I'm sad VF doesn't have online play on the PS3 version, but judging by the fact that tekken, and SC have decided to go online, VF's update release, if they make one, will probably have online play for both versions.

My best guess is that live cuts a lot of their losses from console sales, especially last gen (and if it worked then, why the heck shouldn't they keep it eh?) and also to pay some developers to include online content.

true.but the 360's dpad aint gettin' better, so the drawback is the horrid controls on my 360. Thank god i play shooters most of the time.
Dedicated servers are a must. No way we should be paying and not receive dedicated servers.smooothe
A dedicated server cost more than $100.00 a month to rent. PC gamers pay for them but are you willing to pay? The Ps3 does not have true dedicated servers either.

You should be able to use your own 360 to host a dedicated server when you don't feel like playing. Anyway, not every PC gamer has to pay to keep dedicated servers running.

Most dedicated servers are rented from server farms. I know some people run them in their basement but it all depends on your internet connection and most ISPs do not allow servers.
I think Rainbow Six supports dedicated servers but no one uses it because it means the host wouldn't be able to play. That is how a real dedicated server operates. Who is willing to buy two consoles to have one operate as a dedicated server? WHat would be better is if you can use your PC as a dedicated server like in shadowrun.

Better than no dedicated servers at all. And you don't need 2 360s, just use your only one when you aren't playing.

Would the option do any harm? There's no reason not to add it.And why won't GS let me do single quotes?
Oh, I forgot to mention that while we are paying $50 for XBL, we are getting a service littered with advertisements...Damn M$ likes to make that money.smooothe

Are you referring to the little box that you cannot click, locatedon the dash? Is that what you consider littered with advertisements? Do you consider this website littered with advertisement? I have seen some really useful info on that dash.
