I think "Stan" is a much better representation of what rap can produce.

Right now, I'm really liking that Rihanna song "Umbrella". I use to just skim past it on TV and on radio, but listening to the lyrics, musical arrangements... damn this is one helluva great song. It's getting great reviews as well, so I'm not alone on this one.

Love how the guitar breaks into the chorus. And Rihanna looks hot. She does the emo fringe better than emos themselves.

T_T Something tells me youve never gave rap a chance and only go by what others say.I could easily say rock is nothing but garbage with some tatted up emo guy screaming nothing with a guitar in the background,or country is nothing but hicks who talk about girls thinkin their tractors are sexy.Whats the point?

Rock sucks now adays as do rap.

FrozenLiquid

Rap is sampled crap with nursery rhymes

And rock is an outlet of hatred towards society?

See how stupid that sounds?

The little black kid that lives down the block from me can rap and he never even took any lessons

Yeah and the scrawny white kid can jam on his Fender Strat and whine about how PS3's are too expensive. He never took any lessons either.

Dude, you try rap. In fact, free style right now. Off the top of your head. Go. Freestyle for 30 seconds.

Lost for words there, Mr. Gore?

You're right in a way.

Both are a considered a fresh yet risky extension into an existing artform.

Both are often criticised by the ignorant for their supposed narrow appeal and shallowness.

Both, in the hands of the right creators, can produce works of brilliance.

Ps. Try to get a boader perspective on rap. Try Brother Ali for starters - you won't be disappointed.

THIS THREAD IS LAUGHABLE!

BC1391, Ganon_919, Yoshi_64, and all others even though I hate the music I still must respect you guys for defending it.

It seems to me most people can't tell the difference between hip-hop culture and ghetto culture, because they are not the same.

I find it hilarious that everyone is trying to shut down a genre, when people are trying to use crap bands as examples as an attempt to own them. I mean did someone in this thread said that rap sucked and then claimed that they were a "hardrocker" and mentioned Pearl Jam and Tool :|...

Anyway I just find it ridiculous that everyone is too busy trying to be "hardcore" with "OMG no buying the Wii Play! The Industry will die!" Yet they listen to the most casual trash in their genre like Metallica, Trivium, Ateryu, and all this other crap?

I'm sorry but to claim that people are "destorying" a hardcore market just so that you destroy another one is just ridiculous. I'm not surprised especialyl with the crap I hear from Guitar Hero. Metallaic being what again....skilled? AC/DC complex? WTF they play only one riff for 5 minutes and call it a song. Jimmi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all-time?

I mean take this for instance, Children of Bodom use to be a pretty good band that mixed power/thrash/death metal all into one, and then they got popular withthe casuals and now they are like anyother washed up hacks.

Speaking of the band I constantly hear people say how awesome their riffs are, when they literally just copy and paste from STONE a band I bet none of the attackers have ever heard of (note this song isn't ripped of by Bodom) *a band they take influence from which it's lead guitarist is the rhythem guitarist in CoB*

Seriously look at this.

Pretty cool riff *sorry I couldn't find one performed by the band*But wait why does it sound so familiar?

Oh year it's the EXACT same riff as this but played faster.

Yeah this is cool, but why does it sound so familar?

Oh yeah it's the EXACT same as the chorus only dumbed down I see.

I can go on and on on how these bands in these genres are complete copy and past dumbed down rip-offs as of other much higher bands.Kind of like how console FPS's copy PC FPS's only dumb them down to a huge extent, which many of these attackers also like...hmmm..... They are also dissing another genre for people taste and dismissing it as stupid and even making wise cracks about the people that they think the genre represents. Isn't that kind of like how some of these people diss JRPG's and make fun of the Japanese for buying games that they can't read so automatically default them as "weird" and claim that they are what's this now? "Racist" for not buying the games they enjoy when they aren't even published there in the first place?

At least those who are defending hip-hop know what the sty1e came from and who the originators are, can't say that about most rock/metal fans I see on this board.

It's funny to hear people complain about how these casuals are killing their market, when they are killing there own core markets.

I mean isn't this funny to anybody else?

But seriously, the metal heads are so arrogant it's not even funny.FrozenLiquid

I'm a metal head and I'm not arrogant. Don't attack me for what others, who i frown upon quite often to, do. I may not listen to a lot of rap, but when i hear good stuff I'll give credit to it regardless of the genre. For example, one of my preferred rap artist/group would have to be Jurassic 5. Quality stuff right there. 8)

Wow...

You don't think Yngwie Malmsteen is the greatest guitarist of all time, do you? Personally, I don't like his stuff. I honestly do think Hendrix is the better musician. Maybe not technically, but certainly artistically.

Metallica is skilled? They brought great music. Maybe they went a little too mainstream after awhile. But I'll admit I don't listen to them much, nor know how they operated. I just listen to what ever my friends give me.

That means Dragonforce, Dream Theater, In Flames. Then I crossover to Cradle of Filth, CoB, 8 Foot Sativa. Hell, they give kudos to Creed, but it's way too light for them.

Then I have another group of friends. Those guys who listen to G Unit, Nas, DMX, Tupac, Ludacris, Biggie. Usher, Mary J, Chris Brown, Ciara. I listen to those guys too, but like rock, I don't delve way too deep into any one artist.

The only person I've been a fan of, and will probably stay as the only person, is Michael Jackson. That guy has (had) it all. Rock fans like Beat It with Van Halen's solo. Hip hop fans love Smooth Criminal and Remember the Time. Billie Jean is a universal ****c. His work as a youngun in the Jackson 5 group was extraordinary. His solo work, legendary. Don't even get me started on his dancing. It's too bad his personal life has caught the attention of the media recently rather than his contributions to music. Let his comeback album remind everyone once again why he is called the King of Pop (No, it's not that pop/rock sh*t you hear on MTV. Pop as in a broad range of music).

By the way, most of your post is going to go through one ear and come out the other from these forumites.

Guess I wasn't praising nor discriminating you.

However, may I just say that you shouldn't laugh at those that like Pearl Jam, Tool etc. Unless you're saying they think it's extremely heavy music.

It's a pretty good analogy as Rap is the best type of music going around.

""Ya heard, Perth's perfect person's coercion, of the murderous verses and word perversion
Nos for R to thirstin', burgundy burstin', hypnotise any version of a verbal virgin" - Tomahawk.

Going by your thread Tomahawk excretes more creative talent when he's going to the toilet than you have.

Bad Comparison, man.

Underneath all the "Shop Boyz," "Fiddy's," and "Hueys" of the rap world, you have a lot of great stuff (Regenerated Headpiece, Common, Optimus Rhyme, etc.)

I can´t believe this thread is still going, rap has been owned in this thread more times then I could count. Rap is weak musically you don´t want to get into this again. The singing or lack of, the instrumental or lack of, the same damn message over and over again, the bad structure and composition of the songs, the contradictive nature of rap is hilarious. It´s fine to like it but as music it´s weak, and no putting words together making them rime for long peridos of time doesn´t make good music.

PS: GOOD MUSIC ISN´T OPINION BASED! Just because you like it doesn´t mean sh*t.

Stop listening to 50 cent and go listen to someone who is actually good.

Edit: and your opinion on it being weak musically is no more valid than someone else's opinionon it not. ;)

[QUOTE="Eddie-Vedder"]I can´t believe this thread is still going, rap has been owned in this thread more times then I could count. Rap is weak musically you don´t want to get into this again. The singing or lack of, the instrumental or lack of, the same damn message over and over again, the bad structure and composition of the songs, the contradictive nature of rap is hilarious. It´s fine to like it but as music it´s weak, and no putting words together making them rime for long peridos of time doesn´t make good music.Foolz3h

Stop listening to 50 cent and go listen to someone who is actually good.

Edit: and your opinion on it being weak musically is no more valid than someone else's opinionon it not. ;)

OMG It´s so friggin irratating when people say crap like that, musical quality isn´t OPINION BASED! Your not born with musical knowledge, you have to study it as you have to study math or any other subject, opinion counts for next to nothing when your talking about musical quality. Everyone know everthing, everything is opinion based, well there goes art down the drain cause now a days it´s all up to opinion. I can´t stand people who think they know everything because they "feel" they do. Music is my great passion in life, I study it, I play it, I listen 24/7 to it, don´t come here and say it´s opinion based. You clearly have no idea what your talking about.

Musical knowledge is NOT opinion musical quality IS.

It really is as simple as that.

That said if you don't like something you can still recognise it is good.
And don't belittle my musical knowledge when it is completely un-called for. ;)
Oh and I dont' think I know everythinga bout music unlike you but I know enough about it to know that saying "all rap music has crap somposition" etc. Is just an ignorant statement and surely someone asknowledgable as you would not make such a statement.

And I can't be bothered finding a better song for you know. Look it up your self. Someone as awesome as you should be able to do some research themselves.

good night.

Do you have any idea what your saying? Based on your point of view art is forever dead, all that is left is preference, I can now say the britney spears is of the highest musical quality, because that´s my opinion, do you know how wrong that is? music has a great deal of math in it, it just isn´t so linear, musical quality is no opinion based, it´s fact. You don´t like something from mozart it´s crap in terms of quality, you here one of those emo cores on mtv and you like it it has quality just because you like it? No no, uneducated people try to put everything opinion based, well it´s not I´m sorry but your dead wrong.

I´m sorry that I came off as arrogant, but everyone has a passion in life mine is music, and everyone talks as if they knew everything, I HAVE studied music, it´s MY BIG PASSION in life, I revolve around it, sorry if I think I know more then the posters defending rap in system wars. It just gets my blood boiling I can´t stand people say music or any other art form is all opinion based, that´s why art is dieing off, lately there is no good or bad there the you like it? na I don´t like it. Take some history lessons and tell me that you still think it´s opion based, quality is quality, if you like it or not is opinion based, quality is either there or it isn´t, and yes I have seen good rappers, this is like the 5th time I´m going through this again in this same thread, but the crap around their music overshadows the rarely good something.

You obviously didn't read my post very well did you?

Education obviously isn't very effective judging by your post. ;)

And you seem to be confusing art with convention. ;)

And I like Mozart (brahms owns him forgoten how to spell the name though) and I can recognise that some rock is quality music even though I hate it.

Just as you should be able to recognise that some rap is good music artistically creativitally in musical composition etc.
Obviously though you're to arogant and stuck in your ways to do any research yourself.

ANd for the love of god read someone's post before replying to it.

Seriously you're nothing but a hypocritcal arogant person who has studied music. And yet your musical knowledge doesn't seem to be very good, nor does your level of inteligence. ;)

PS: GOOD MUSIC ISN´T OPINION BASED! Just because you like it doesn´t mean sh*t.

Eddie-Vedder

A wise man once told me that there is no such thing as "good" or "bad" music. Music is only good or bad in the realm of human perception.

You percieve rap as a whole to be bad and that's all it is, your own perception. Others (such as myself) percieve rap music in avastlydifferent manner. This means good music is all an opinion. THus, disporving your final statement. You cannot factually claim that one genre of music is better than another. There is no irrefutable truth anywhere in your statement that makes it a fact.

As stated before, I could easily state that rock reuses the same themesover and over again such as a hatred towards societyand crying over a lost love. Same theme, different lyrics. So this can' be used against rap. Almost all forms of music are repetitive in some form or another.

I'm sorry you're so closed minded and can't appreciate rap for two seconds without bashing it. Your loss I suppose. You can claim rap is the worst form of music in existence all you like, but that won't make it true, no matter how long you cry about it.

Dencore

This is the greatest, most accurate post in SW history. Well done.

PS - Yngwie rules, him and Petrucci are the most underrated Rock(virtuoso) guitarists ever.

Guess I wasn't praising nor discriminating you.

However, may I just say that you shouldn't laugh at those that like Pearl Jam, Tool etc. Unless you're saying they think it's extremely heavy music.

FrozenLiquid

That's exactly it they were acting like it was underground and hardcore.

sigh this thread is going to the same place where every rap thread had gone to...nowhere. Eddie here thinks his music is somehow so much holier and better than rap music by a fact that **** and crunk is all that rap music ever was. but when we look at lyrics you can never tryly know what song is rap and which is some other genre. Sad to think that great words go unheaded just because they are sung differently. From Mozart, Paganini, Hendrix, Tupac, Guns and Roses, Bach, Beethoven, AC/DC, Metallica, to everything else music has changed from generations and there were always people who hated a genre but the music stayed.

2pac - Better Dayz Lyrics

Lookin for these better days
Better days, heyyy! Better days
Got me thinkin bout better days
Better days! Better days, better days
Heyyy! Better days
Got me thinkin bout better days

[Verse One]
Time to question our life**** look how we live
Smokin weed like it ain't no thang, so even kids
wanna try now, they lie down and get ran through
Nobody watched 'em clockin the evil man do
Faced with the demons, addicted to hearin victims screamin
Guess we was evil since birth, product of cursed semens
Cause even our birthdays is cursed days
A born thug in the first place, the worst ways
I'd love to see the block in peace
With no more dealers and crooked cops, the only way to stop the beast
And only we can change
It's up to us to clean up the streets, it ain't the same
Too many murders, too many funerals and too many tears
Just seen another brother buried plus I knew him for years
Passed by his family, but what could I say?
Keep yo' head up and try to keep the faith
And pray for better days

Better days, better days, heyyy!
Better days.. got me thinkin bout better days
Better days, better days, better days
Heyyy! Better days
Got me thinkin bout better days

[Verse Two]
Thinkin back as an adolescent, who would've guessed
that in my future years, I'd be stressin
Some say the ghetto's sick and corrupted
Plus my P.O. won't let me hang with the brothers I grew up with
Tryin to keep my head up and stay strong
All my homies slangin llello all day long, but they wrong
So I'm solo and so broke
Savin up for some Jordan's, cause they dope
I got a girl and I love her but she broke too, and so am I
I can't take her to the place she wanna go to
So we argue and play fight, all day and night
Makin passionate love 'til the daylight
Plus we about to get evicted, can't pay the rent
Guess it's time to see who really is yo' friend
Tell me you pregnant and I'm amazed
So many blessings while we stressin
Lookin for them better days

For better days, better days, better days, heyyy!
Better days.. got me thinkin bout better days
Better days, better days, better days
Heyyy! Better days.. got me thinkin bout better days

[Verse Three]
Now me and you was real cool, hell on them square fools
Since back in high school, we was true, me and you
Hardly parted or seperated, we stayed faded
Affiliated with gangbangers and still made it
Up in the gym, mess with me, gotta mess with him
Still dressin like grown men when rollin
I went to dark, smokin Newports, gamin marks
Got a place in my heart, homey stay smart
Locked you up in the pen, and gave you three to ten
I send you letters with naked flicks of old friends
Hopin you well, I know it's hell
Doin time in the cells, you need mail, when you in jail
And me I'm doin cool
I settled down, had a family, workin in night school
Every once in a while, I reminisce
And wonder how we ever came to this
I miss the better days

Better days, better days, heyyy!
Better days.. I'm thinkin bout better days
Better days, better days, better days
Heyyy! Better days.. got me thinkin bout better days

I send this one out, to all the homeboys down in uh, Clinton lockdown
Rikers Island, all them dudes I was uh locked up with, hehe
E Block, F Block, lower H
N-I-C in Rikers Island, downstate
All the peoples I met along the way
Better days is comin homeboy, keep your head up

Better days, better days, better days
Heyyy! Better days.. uhh, lookin for the better days
Better days, better days, lookin for the better days
Heyyy! Hahaha..

STAIRWAY TO HEAVE

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

And she's buying a stairway to heaven, uh uh uh.

I heard a couple of minutes of the song you linked and I´ve heard that same song over and over again for the last 10 years. Nothing new there. There is no point in argueing the color of a wall with blind men, you guys want to think you have it right I don´t care, there are already so many of you, another one or 2 is fine with me.

Here are some of my personal favorite artists, try to watch these videos and tell me they don´t have musical quality and rap is more complex or more complete or whatever.

I can never get into rap. The beats were always very repetetive to me and I can never relate to the subject matter they sang about. I'm a white middle class boy that came from the burbs, gangbanging, guns, violence, opression, police brutality. Were never issues with me. I respect the music but I just don't understand how kids in similar situations like I was growing up could look up these artists and get into this whole rap thing...some gimmie a heads up or something cause I don't get it.

I doubt that band you´ve pointed out is better then tool, but comparing them you got my curiosity tweaked, could you tell me a couple of songs to listen to?

The Residents is an aquired taste. They practically invented modern/prog rock. Only a true music lover would like them. Other people would go, "What?". I guess you could watch this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sWRGKQgJrIA

I´m not saying it´s wrong to listen to stuff, damn it´s hard getting your point through around here, the point is musical quality isn´t opinion based, you can like the message or the lyrics cause you relate, but you can also relate to a frog in a certain situation in your life, all I´m saying is musical quality is not opinion, to understand it fully you have to study it just like math, I have lots of bands I don´t like but have a lot of quality, opeth is a good example it´s just not my thing but the quality is there.

This is just sad, pathetic even. Fine. It's clear to me that you're so blind by your own perceptions of rap that you're never going to change. You can continue to spout off about rap being the worst form of music if you'd like, but given your limited understanding of the art form, you'll just continue tohave no idea what you're talking about. But that's okay, I'll justleave you to wallow in your own closed minded ignorance.

First off you entered this concersation out of context, would you like to explain to me why people study music, if it´s all opinion based, or maybe explain why rap in general is good? What is it exactly that makes it good? The singing?(or lack of) The beat down message(which is pretty much the only thing that is opinion in music), The intrumental?(yay pc samples ftw) what makes it good muscially?

First off you entered this concersation out of context, would you like to explain to me why people study music, if it´s all opinion based, or maybe explain why rap in general is good? What is it exactly that makes it good? The singing?(or lack of) The beat down message(which is pretty much the only thing that is opinion in music), The intrumental?(yay pc samples ftw) what makes it good muscially?

Music can illicit certain feelings from people. People study music and determine what feelings it illicits and dissects the track from there on. There are cerrtainly other factors and variables in music study, but this is one of the main recurring themes. Rap music is no different. It can illicit feelings from someone as well as any other genre of music. The lyrics in combination with the music behind it can bring about significant emotional response.

Oftentimes, singing isn't present in rap,but then again, there doesn't always have to be. Although, there are some MC's who incorportatesinginginto their rhymes and do a very good job of it. A skilled lyricist can write and say their lines to the beat, timing their words precisely with the tempo to make thingls flow smoothly, to the point where there is no disconnect between the music and the lyrics.

You say the message is always the same and spout off generic themes that permeate mainstream rap. Well, I'll give you that one. Mainstream rap is often tied down by the same generic themes you mentioned. BUT, if you go beneath the surface to the underground, old school and true hip hop, you don't find these repetitive themes. What you find are real lyricits with real messages to say. It is here that you find deep messages, well thought out rhymes, and often well done storytelling. Rappers can tell a story or convey a message just as well as any rocker can. If you really listened to rap, you'd know this.

Again, you say rappers always sample other tracks. Well, some do, and most don't. The majority of tracks use entirely original beats. If you listen closely, they are just as deep and well formed as any other form of music. hell, even some of the sampled tracks improve on the original, adapting them to a new style, and work wonders. The sound quality is great, but only if you really listen for it.

These are allvalid reasons why Rap is good musically. As I stated before (in a post you conveniently ignored by the way) there is no such thing as good or bad music. It's all based on perception, that's why it's opinion based. The feelings a certain song illicits from you is universal, but the song itself isn't. There are songs I flat out despise that others like. Does that mean that they're bad musically? No. That's just my perception. How is your opinion on rap music somehow better than mine on this issue? Bottom line is, it isn't. Rap isn't worse than any other genre of music, no matter how bad you think it is.

Fine lol, the instrumental is just a pc sample played in loop, no skill required whatsoever, the lyrics talk about the same thing all the other rap songs talk about am I wrong? Surviving, robbing killing to survive, they have there "corner" which is there little home, original... The song has the most basic of structures, verse chorus verse chorus, that isn´t even so much of a bad thing the problem is the song satys the same all through the 4min the only change is the person singing(rapping), not once through the whole song do you see something musically impressive, the only thing that can be argued as worked on is the lyrics which sincerly are really just the same thing all the other songs say change a rime here and there, add a yo here and a check this out there. It´s fine to like it man, just don´t try to pass it off as a musical wonder. Am I wrong? Relating to something, or just liking it not knowing why is fine, just don´t tell me that that song is of immense muscial quality. Even in the creative department they get a minus score, your honestly going to tell me that you´ve never heard a rap song like this one? I don´t even listen to rap and I bet in an hour aaI could find a dozen of the same type of songs.

Yeah, looking back at it, that was a mistake. I'm going to go edit the post now with this new information.
