I'm sure you're familiar with the video game industry crash of 1983.

Basically the market got flooded with so many crappy games that it choked itself out. Consumers lost confidence to the point where they just stopped buying the product.

The Wii seems to be heading down that path in a hurry.

The Wii's huge success could potentially translate into a massive downfall.

Does anyone else think this is totally possible based on the current state of Wii software?

I don't think so, as Wii has shown that there is an applicable market for the product. It also offers some great "hardcore" games (I hate that word).

Its not just Happening to the Wii, it Happens to every Console! and Machine! PS3 might fail, Xbox 360 might fail! iTouch or whatever is failing! DS is rising thanks to its new release of GTA: Chinatown wars, And Wii is getting some good games in 2009, so wait, and lets see! And if people use their brains and they own opinions then this shouldn't happen!

Havn't noticed any decline with the Wii yet, so I doubt it.

Also i wanted to say this, the Wii has an 83 with it in 2008, but it has picked itself up very quickly, just like any Nintendo Console! You can Thank SSBB for saving the Wii in 2008!!! And SSBB one of the best games on Wii!

Sadly, you fail. This is nothing like the crash of 83' everything the Wii has to offer is selling like hot cakes. TechGuru89

? It was huge sales of crap games that killed the industry.
ET the extraterrestrial is probably the most famous case of that.

The Wii's shovelware rarely sells well unless it has advertising, hype, or had a similar name/boxart to a successful game. Most of the Wii's million sellers are quality titles, and most shovelware does not sell well. The issue with the crash was that there was less competition around, and video games had not yet really kicked off that well. Today the gaming business, like most entertainment, is more or less fail proof even in tough times because people want to escape.

The only major difference now is that there is still a healthy indie and core market throughout the entire industry.

I understand that...Shoot me some crap games that are selling well and killing the industry....? Sure there are some questionable games, but for the most part it's all typical garbage games that are on every damn game system.

I doubt a massive downfall would occur anytime soon for the wii. If so it would probably be a slow climb down, certainly not before this generation is over.

To my understanding the big difference between this time and back then is that gaming is way more pupular now than how it was back then... it was a crysis because with a market full of crap, the few gamers back then began to lose interest.

Now, gaming fanbase is way more solid and not even the Wii is going to do any harms to it.

But the premise of being full of crap still applies to the Wii... not every game that's granted, but the vast majority is crap.

actually, thats not really the reason. games actually DIDNT sell. there were a few reasons, but the main one was market over-saturation. from Wiki:

"There were several reasons for the crash, but the main cause was oversaturation of the market with dozens of consoles and hundreds of mostly low-quality games. Hundreds of games were in development for the 1983 release alone, and this overproduction resulted in a saturated market without the consumer interest it needed"

there were alot of low quality games being released, but they were not selling.

A year and a half ago I would have said yes, but within the past couple months and it getting a lot of third party support that is not shovelware I would say no. I think party games are dying out on the Wii compared to the first year it was out.

360 and PS3 have shown that there are enough hardcore gamers to sustain the industry. Even if the Wii scares off casuals, all of us serious gamers will continue to know how to sort through the crap and get to the good stuff.

Gaming is blowing up, and with that comes some negative effects, but I hardly think the Wii is killing gaming. Nintendo basically needed a new angle, and totally went a different route than the other 2. They are giving people stuff like Wii Fit, Rapala Fishing, Wii Sports... how much crossover do you think there is between Cooking Mama and Killzone 2. Like... .0008%? Those people were never going to buy Empire: Total War. My buddies that only play shooters and sports games aren't going to try out some Wii minigame junk and decide they hate gaming.

The shovelware just feeds developers coin purses so they can focus on their vanity projects, stuff that taxes their creative limits and their hardware limitations. I know this for a fact. Why do you think BioWare made a DS Sonic game?

Also worth considering is the vast wealth of information we have available to us these days, and not just in the form of official Nintendo Power magazines and such. If a game sucks, someone will leak a blog about it. There is just no way to slip junk by people as easily as they used to.

The difference this time is that the people buying the industry-crashing shovelware can't tell that the games they're buying are steaming buckets of elephant piss, therefore making a mass loss of confidence impossible.

Wrong....Capcom has shipped 4 million units.....sales probably won't be even half of that. Still impressive, but items shipped and sold are two completely different beasts.

Yes, the Wii is the bane of all human existence. It has caused the world economy to crash since its lameness forced all the banks to put their money into its Wii-ness and this was a terrible idea as all the banks are failing. The Wii is also ultra lame cause it attracts comets from space and one is spiraling towards the earth right now thanks to that little white box. All the demons and the devils of the 9th level of purgatory will rise from a crack of the earth's core and devour all the children, puppies, kittens, mice, and everything nice.

You act as if the Wii has absolutely nothing good on it. Sure it has a lot of shovelware, no one buys it (and I know im going to get the idiots who post me Wii Fit or Wii Music sales figures) -- it still gets a good flow of A-AAA titles.

man , if this was the crash ps3 sure wouldnt be here thats for sure nor would any thing else, so no the wii ps3 or the 360 are far from crashing

sure the wii has a good line up and lead , but the 360 and ps3 have their own titles, gosh people think just because it doenst have a mountain full of first person shooters, that it is a crash ,lol.

tc you fail ,

because a crash is where everything not just one product comes to an end,

wii has sold 360 2 to 1 and ps3s 2 1/3 to 1 ,

wii has sold over 49 million

360-28 million

and ps3 22 million

so ya, wii has been out selling ps3 and 360 since its launch , in 06

and wii has over 20 GAMES THAT SOLD OVER 1MILLION PLUS

the wii has more games then ps3 and 360 combined

do you know what really happened in the crash obviously you do not,

heres what happened

atari kept releasing the same type of game , back to back , every one lost interist in gaming because the lack of variety,

they were sick of playing the same type of games , so what happened is the games /consoles stop selling,

the wii is doing quite the opposite

they offer variety in games

not the same game everytime ,

now ps3 and 360 is becoming questionable,

look how many first person shooters it has, !

and yet wii is the crash of 83 lol i dont think so ,

Why do we talk about casual/shoverlware so much here if this forum is so hardcore? dont even relate it to salesbecause cows/lemmings absoloutely despise sales, according to them anyway. I mean the Wii even has some good core games released which could be talked about but people prefer to talk about shoverlware instead.

2005 - Gimmick

2006 - Mini game fest

2007 - Casual

2008 - Shovelware

2009 - Video game crash

I wonder what its going to be next year.

The wii is too expensive to develop for for something like that to happen.

PS2 was the king of shovelware, so your comparison fails.dr-venkman

PS2 had a much more healthy ratio of high quality games to low quality games. It didn't really have that much shovelware. For shovelware see the PS1.

PS2 has plenty of quality 3rd Party support, the Wii didn't. In fact, Nintendo never got the amount of 3rd Party support since the SNES days. For the record, whoever posted that the Video Game Crash of 1983 is the result of lack of variety made a good case, and if anything, lack of creativity usually spells the downfall of any industry.

I disagree completely. While it does have its bad games, like every other console ever made, it certainly has its fair share of good games as well. In fact, I find it hard to keep up with all of it. In fact, IMO, this gen wouldn't be so appealing to me if it wasn't for the Wii. Not just the Wii, but the whole combination of consoles and handheld. And yes, the Wii is a big part of that. We wouldn't have as many unique niche games that we have now if it wasn't for the Wii, and they bring a unique flavor to a generation that would otherwise feel old (albeit still great). But if you take everything that the 360 has, mix in the Wii, DS, PSP, and PS3, including each of their respective download services, and Backwards Compatability, and that is what I consider gaming heaven, and that's why I plan to stay with this gen for a long time.

I think the market has grown too big to "crash" in a similar fashion, games like CoD4 sell so much that no matter what happens someone will keep making them on some platform.

I wish just once, one of these threads would make a good point instead of the same wrong argument everytime. Someone make an "HD is killing gaming thread". It may be incorrect but we might actually get a worthwhile debate out of it.

No. 1. The shovelware on the Wii is not even comparable to the Atari's. 2. PC, DS, PSP, 360 and PS3 3. Industry growing healthy.

The industry is too large to crash. The only way I can see this happening is if things become stagnant. Graphics get to a point were they can't get any better and companies run out of revolutionary ideas to mix up and change gameplay. Of course this will never happen as technology and new ideals keep getting introduced into the world at a rapid rate.

Conjuration

Umm...the crash of '83 was mainly Atari's fault and the fault of way too many Arcade machines being made...oversupply. When people grew bored of Atari 2600 games, Atari still made really terrible business decisions. E.T. sure didn't help the situation. More cartridges were made than there were Atari 2600s in existence. That is the type of stuff Atari did. Really popular arcade games at the time like Pac-Man were made into the worst version imaginable on Atari 2600. People were getting fed up and bored of using one stick with one button. Atari wasn't willing to change. And with a bunch of games on store shelves not selling, 2600 games soon plummeted (some new games even sold at a dollar or less). People overestimated Arcades and thought they'd remain just as popular as ever. It was soon discovered though that there were just too many machines on the market. And they were expensive to manufacture. Those 2 things are what mainly cause the crash...Atari and Arcades.

No company is nearly as stupid now as back then. There might be a tiny crash eventually, but never as big as 83. Why single out Wii? Why not say "PS2 sold 120 million...oh noez! A crash may happen." See how silly it sounds?

I'm pretty sure that in the crash of '83 there weren't a strong pulse of quality games to blot out the shovelware.

TAKE_IT_BACK

Actually there was. The problem was that the market got flooded with the crap games, which didn't sell, which got discounted heavily, which killed sales of the more expensive quality titles. The flood of crap snuffed out the good. The same could happen again. We all know nintendo went after the nongamer and the lapsed gamer. A LOT of its userbase is these people, and these people are the ones who flocked to games back in the late 70's and early 80's and left the hobby partially responsible for the crash. IF these people make a similar mass exodus again, the Wii has a MUCH higher portion of its userbase that could suddenly disappear. The 360 and PS3 have a smaller foundation, but the entire foundation is of "core" gamers. The Wii has a larger foundation, but the strength of that foundation is a huge question mark. I personally know of at least 10 wii owners who bought the system, bought several games for it within weeks of getting it, who haven't touched their systems in months/sold it out right.

It was the crash of all VG systems in NA. Nothing happened in the home market from early - mid 83 until the NES released in the US in early 1986. It also led to companies taking more responsibility in what comes out for their systems.

Oh man, there are SO many reasons thats not true. With the internet and other forms of quality control, its easier for people to avoid garbage, some people obviously still buy shovelware, but its not the only thing on the market..
