[QUOTE="Chutebox"]Story has never been the series strong suit. That's okay and all.Of course lol

I stated with the workings of Karen Travis, she's a phenomenal author and wrote the Gears books. Coalitions end the recent one was a 5/5 out for and she's creating Gears of war 3s story. Now I'm wondering, will the story for Gears of war 3 flop with the workings of Karen Travis? I've already read all her Gears of war books and can safely say they were awesome. So, what do you think?

If the game proves me wrong then great but I still have my doubts. This is GEARS...I barely even remember the story for the first two games. Now I'm wondering, will the story for Gears of war 3 flop with the workings of Karen Travis? [QUOTE="TheUnchartedFan"] My personal opinion is the stereotype will continue that Gears has a terrible storyIronbashLooking at your name i'm not surprised I've got an X-box 360 you know? Just bought it. Never played Gears but read the novels and am anticipating three. Heard stories previously flopped though.
I've definitely noticed a more serious and less comical tone in Gears of War 3, and I heard Epic has better writers working on Gears 3.
Even if the story was bad, it'd be fine because Gears has never been about the story, but I actually think Gears 3 will have a pretty good-decent story.

They didn't flop but they weren't cohesive enough, were presented crudely and emotional scenes were cringable. The plot was a great premise though.
Both Gears and Uncharted's stories are predictable and bland. Play the games because there fun, not for the stories.
At least the leads in Uncharted have personalities and emote realistically. Both Gears and Uncharted's stories are predictable and bland. Play the games because there fun, not for the stories.

I'll agree with that. Gears characters have been designed so overly bad-ass they've become a parody (not the humorous duke nukem kind... the annoying kind where you're laughing at them, not with them.).
First one was a bro story about killin them big bad subterraineans by way of chainsaw. Simple premise that worked because it was'nt trying to be too ambitious.
Second one had the ambitions and was a mess as a result.
Third one seems to continue the tradition of Gears 2 and good authors don't necessarily make good game writers imho.
I recall Crysis 2 having an acclaimed writer as well.
I disagree, I just looked up the cut scene footage for "Dom finds Maria". And thought it was utter crap compared to the books writing. Like I said, just failed execution. But good voice acting at least.i enjoy gears' story, i cannot wait to find out what happens. there is a myth around that just because there isn't a lot of talking, it means the story is crap. the ruined buildings, the stranded, the equipment and weapons all tell the story.
if people think the story is rubbish, maybe thats because their mummies and daddies are still reading them bedtime stories and they need to hear words to work out what is happening and what is driving characters etc. or perhaps they expect too much.
during gears 2 i felt really sad when you find doms wife, if you actually have a wife and put yourself in his position, you feel emotion. if you laugh at that scene or think its rubbish, perhaps you are just to young to understand.
look i am not saying its the greatest story, its an action game after all, of course it wont win any prizes for literature.

I mean, one wasn't bad. I just didn't feel it was fleshed out enough, Gears of war 2 was horrendous. They ruined any positiveness the franchise had story wise. Now I'm wondering, will the story for Gears of war 3 flop with the workings of Karen Travis? I've already read all her Gears of war books and can safely say they were awesome. So, what do you think? My personal opinion is the stereotype will continue that Gears has a terrible story, though three will put it at a good point.TheUnchartedFan
What are you talking about? Gears 2 story was just fine but I am sorry, if you are playing Gears for the "story" you might want to sit back reconsider gaming as a hobby.
I don't play Gears for the story.
Though Karen is working on it, and her books were fantastic. I like the new "We're not an army anymore, we're just a couple of humans tring to survive" approach for Gears 3 as well. :)
Makes it seem more original.I don't play Gears for the story.

The writer apparently is good, so perhaps not this time.Stevo_the_gamerI hope you're correct. IGN stated the story was apparently much improved in the first act and beat of Gears of war 2 as a whole. Though it's IGN.
Gears is about gameplay and graphics, I don't think anyone cares about the story. If I want a good story I read a book or watch a movie, I sure as hell don't play a video game.Miketheman83
Maybe a game can have Great gameplay and graphics, plus a great story.
A great story is always a welcome bonus. :)
Looking at who's writing it, and her record would be a good start. Here you go.How in God's name are we supposed to know?

She is usually a good writer. But it could still fail. All of these thrreads saying stuff like "will (game x) win GOTY?" "Will this game fail?" There is literally no way of knowing until the game comes out.
There is literally no way of knowing until the game comes out. There is no inherent guarantee, but that doesn't mean you can't reasonably speculate.turtlethetaffer

Gears never needed to be serious.
