Capcom's famous Resident Evil franchise finds itself in familiar territory- almost a decade ago, the series was growing stagnant after three quick releases, the old formula growing thin, the dated premise and the obsolete development and game design sensibilities beginning to show their age. This was mostly becoming apparent with the release of Resident Evil 3, a game which fans felt was the weakest entry in the series. Adding salt to the wound was the fact that its immediate predecessor, Resident Evil 2, was widely regarded as the best game in the series, and one of the best game sequels of all time.

History indeed repeats itself. The reboot of Resident Evil hit gamers with the superbly reimagined Resident Evil 4, which is now held to be one of the best games of last generation. However, the formula seems to be growing stale, and Capcom seems to be losing its grip, as the recently released Resident Evil 5 was criticized widely for dispensing with the scares altogether, and for becoming a poor man's action game. And yet again, the game held on to some design philosophies that simply have no place in modern gaming. With series like Dead Space becoming the standard for survival horror, Resident Evil is fast losing relevance. Can Capcom reinvent the series yet again, to ensure that one of gaming's oldest mainstays can be enjoyed even today? And in doing so, will we get yet another brilliant masterpiece like we got the last time the series was reimagined with Resident Evil 4?

The topic becomes more relevant when one considers that Capcom recently teased Resident Evil 6, stating that they want the game out as soon as possible. That's all we know about it, though. Which platform? No idea. Release date? Nada on that. All we can speculate on is that the game might be unveiled at TGS later this month. But that's all.

Just what is Resident Evil 6? Does it even exist? And if so, what can we expect from it?GamingBolt

Check out the entire article here!

Thoughts? Personally, I think they make a point. I would certainly like to see a Resident Evil game like they describe in the article. What about you guys?

The article is talking about Resident Evil 6 though, not Revelations. Although I must say, Revelations looks like it might be the truest Resident Evil game in a long, long time.

Eh no, I don't want RE6 to be anything like Dead Space at all.

To make RE6 succeed, they need to merge what made RE1/2/CV great with what made RE4/5 great. So back to Racoon city please.

God would that not just be absolutely fantastic? I would love to have the game take place in Raccoon City
before it was nuked at the end of Nemesis.
I want the damn horror element back. 5 was not a bad game at all, but it was a joke trying to pass off as Resident Evil.

Yeah well I still want a new RE game to be set there. If RE6 has to take place in a time period after RE5 and when Racoon city is dead, then screw the number 6.

I would like a reboot. Drop us back in Raccoon City, bring back zombies and lickers and tyrant, but especially bring back the "survival" portion of survival horror. I understand that it's just a game, but why did every villager I killed have high caliber sniper ammo on him?

Oh, yeah, and bring back the "horror" portion of survival horror too.

Ahh yes the survival aspect. I almost forgot what that feels like. I really miss that and it is amazing how much that aspect can add to a horror game.

They need to bring back the zombies, but not in Racoon City. New outbreak, new city. Let us play as Leon and Chris, sent in to deal with the undead. Make the game take place all in one night, starting at sundown and ending at sunrise. Also: Zombie Crows. Sound good?

Make it like RE2 with RE5 graphics and gameplay. Mix it in with more zombie count on screen, rare ammo supplies, intriguing puzzles and a good story and level design and i'll pretty much cream my pants.

Man I really love what some of you are coming up with. I would love a new outbreak, new city, bring Umbrella back and have them in full swing again. I personally really like your idea of starting at sundown and ending the next day at sunrise. I also have to fully support infected crows.

I don't have thoughts either way, on account of not knowing a single goddamn thing about RE6 (y'know, like everyone else).

On the other hand I *do* have an opinion about that article: it's turrible.

Erase the third person shooting mechanics and go back to the darn horror, Code Veronica style.

I want them to go back to Claire Redfield and focus on her story. Couple of years have passed and she wasn't even mentioned in RE5. We only sae her in Degeneration and that was it. Bring back the taser, knifes, and everything nice. These are the ingredients to create a perfect little girl.

I have a question, would anyone else like to see the old camera perspective return? I know it was kind of pathetic at times, but I also felt it really intensified things. I mean I like the third person over the solder view, but that just gives them too much temptation to turn in right back into an action game.

They could just keep it the way it is. Dead Space pulled it off amazingly.

RE5 gameplay just felt slow and behind times....and so repetitive. In Outbreak you could walk and shoot at the same time and that never intefered with anything. I actually think Outbreaks gameplay were the best imo. But I agree with the camera thing. In RE5 the camera it too close to Chris and you can't see whole body, thus canceling the ability to see your surroundings. They sure need to add better animations though.

Yea I love Outbreak's gameplay. I agree Dead Space did pull the third person view off nicely. I guess I just have grudges against it due to the fact that the Resident Evil series lost its luster to me after going 3rd person. Now thinking back on how well DS pulled it off, it could work.

This is what I want(Resident Evil 3.5). I want the Resident Evill we saw before they went in a totally different direct with 4. I know it would feel weird with ghosts and such, but it adds a nice psycological thrill to it. I for one would love to see this be made.

I would die the day Capcom returns to its old roots. That video is so good. Just add in Zombie, mutated trolls, crows, zombie dogs, zombie animals sort of like Outbreak and Zero, and an amazing story with fun gameplay mechanics and you have a 9.5 game that will sell like hot cakes.

Those were the days when Resident Evil was the scariest game on the market.

Such a nostalgic video. Nice find.

I don't think it was the formula of 4 that was getting old I think the issue was that there wasn't any horror element to it and it was a co op game, that ruins the whole thing. It wasn't the old that was bad it was the new that was bad about 5.

I felt that lickers were nowhere near as aggressive or agile as they were in the old games. I reckon that's why they just buffed up their numbers in 5.

You make a great point. One new thing I hated was the cover system (if you can even call it that, probably not). I also am not a fan of the co-op, however it could be done one simple way and that is not to force the garbage. If I could have the option to play the game without a partner it would had been much better, not great but better.

Maybe because the old games look untouchable compared to the crap that the new ones are. I mean Resident Evil was a survival horror and they transformed it into a boring generic TPS. Why would a fan of the series not look back on the older games? Those games are/were fantastic and deserve all of the praise they get. Funny thing is the new ones are not really that great in GP, I for one would much rather have something like the old games, or like Resident Evil 3.5.

Why do people talk about the old games like they were untouchable? The truth is that the gameplay was extremely dated even before the ps2 came out.

That may be but they still provided a great survival horror feel unlike RE4 and especially RE5.

Im not sure how the resident evil movies fit into the Resident evil canon, but a game set in the Hive from the 1st movie would be awesome. Like you wake up right at the bottom, and have to make your way to the top and escape. Wandering around Umbrella laboratories and seeing all the experiments and stuff was always my favourite part of the resident evil games.
