Honestly, what they need to do is revive the Outbreak series instead of bringing this co-op play into the main series.
The main series was supposed to be survival horror. Even with 4 you were still stuck in there fending for yourself, granted they did manage to overpower you to a point where the horror part was lost.
Throwing in co-op really helped ruin 5 I think. It just became a complete action game which rocked for maybe two-weeks then just grew stale. I actually played 4 MUCH more than 5, just getting lost in the greatness that the game was replaying it over and over.
Instead of putting multi-player in the main series they NEED to keep it single player and make it scary again. RE was never about some great story or in-depth characters, it was about the horrifying atmosphere and the whole idea of being trapped in this situation ALONE. Yes there might have been other survivor characters but they weren't there fighting alongside you. The whole reason it was scary was because of how bad the odds were stacked against you. Every single enemy could be potential death if you didn't play it right.
What they can do instead of ruining the main series with multi-player is revive the Outbreak series. In this gen where online gaming is absolutely dominate, a multi-player focused RE like Outbreak would sell like freaking hot cakes. I personally loved both Outbreak games, but they really did seem to come too soon. I mean there was no voice chat and the PS2 online set-up just plain sucked.
Now that we have XBL and PSN at the levels they are now a new Outbreak game could be amazing. Of course they need to go and re-do the series with the new gameplay, but the effort would be worth it. It would make for a great game and I hate the idea that this will likely never happen. After all, this is the same company that let the Dino Crisis series rot after ONE bad entry....
