Considering the recent surge in PS3 sales, do you think it's possible for it to catch up/overtake the 360 in installed users. Yes we already know the wii is dominating both in terms of sales (I'm sure soccer moms and grandparents everywhere are rejoicing). But I'd like to know your opinion.

If the 360 stops selling, then definately. Right now, it will no doubt close the gap, but who knows if it will overtake.

It doesn't really matter anyway, as the install base is so close this gen.

i doubt it. ps3 is in no position to make another price cut.

microsoft can pull off another one anytime they want right now,

they're just waiting for the right moment. during gow3 release perhaps?

It's possible, but I'm not seeing it happening, maybe a close tie but that's about it.

probly, people that are buying systems rite now really dont care about video games(if it took you that long to get a system this gen its safe to say your not really into video games) and you get a free blu-ray player with one of the two.

I predict in 3 or 4 years ....... its know that when Sony releases a SLIM version of there console, sales dramatically increase year to year. Sony said it aimed for 13 million PS3's sold in 2009 and according to Sony's official reports .... Q1 2009 to Q3 2009 = 10.8 Million. Sony's Q4 2009 ends in March 2010. Q4 2008 = 1.6 Million PS3's sold .... with the SLIM out and GOW3 about to release, they'll surpass there goal of 13 Million PS3's sold in FY2009.

That's a real quote from them? :|

But like its been said. For PS3 to overtake the 360 within this generation cycle (before any of the next gen consoles are released, thus beginning the new generation) the 360 would have to stop selling completely. And that's just the wishful thinking of all those "360 is dead" threads we saw in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Nothing more than futile "projections".

Well the tide seems to be turning in Sony's favour in Europe at least. I looked on Wikipedia and the sales for the PS3 and 360 are both pretty much equal at 10 million each. Considering that the 360 was out almost a year and a half earlier,I predict the PS3 overtaking it this year, over here anyway.

I don't think so. Not while this gen is still relevant at least. They have almost 3 years until the end of 2012 when the new consoles are rumored to come out.

why don't people understand ..... its basic economics, if your competitor's price's go down ... your prices HAVE to go down if you want to remain competitive which Sony wants to.

I can't see it happening for a very long time. I think this year the 360 will extend the gap even more so because of games like Alan Wake and Halo: Reach. EDIT: Forgot about God Of War so I can see the gap staying the same. :P

MS can go much further down in price than Sony can with the PS3 at this stage.

Even if the PS3 becomes even more competitive and starts outselling the 360, MS still has to make a judgment call whether or not they can remain competitive against the PS3 at the current price. If they do lower the price, yes sales will increase but Sony can also lower there prices to fight back. Sony would be losing money but they would increase there user base and increase the abillity to buy there 1st party games which Sony is very good at making which ultimately makes them money. The PS3 itself doesn't need to be profitable for Sony to make a profit off it because the PS3 has PSN which generates a lot of money while remaining free. If Sony announces an optional online fee, there PSN profits could easily double and even triple once PSN is extended to other platforms like BRAVIA TV's and Walkman MP3 players which Sony is starting to do. This is also hypothetical ... I have no internal knowledge of MS or Sony so I'm making a general assumption.

The general concensus among cows was that the PS3 would pass the 360 in early 2010. Didn't happen. To be honest, I don't see the tally changing by more than 1 million units in either direction by the end of 2010.

It's getting a little late in the game for Sony. They really have no option for a price drop this year. MS does.

I see MS throwing the 360 away like they did with the Xbox. PS3 is like the PS2, it gonna have support for a long time and my guess, will continue to sell way after 360 is gone. Over time, Sony will make a profit.

it might. but even if it takes over in 2011 will it really matter that much since the next gen will probably start 2012? it wouldn't be by much.

and since they are competing for 2nd it matters less.

Price cut is not the only way a console can sell more. And from what I know of M$,I doubt they will have a price cut.The only reason the Elite went to 299 is because the PS3 also went to 299.If the slim never existed, probably the elite would still be 399.

Why? When just about everything is better for MS this gen. The sales of 360 have long surpassed the sales of the first Xbox, and is continuing to sell excellently. On top of that, MS is making a small fortune from Xbox Live and in royalty fees, considering the 360 is much more popular this gen.

Hence why they are moving away from PC gaming, due to making less money, and focusing more on the 360.

Maybe MS will limit LIVE usage on the 360 when their new console comes out almost forcing users to purchase the new system, i dont know, its my guess. Same with Natal. They will boost about a feature that can only be done on the new xbox and everyone will flock to it. MS will slowly abandon their 360 but it wont be as fast as they did with the original xbox. Overall, PS3 will outlast it in terms of support.

You clearly don't understand the differences between the generations. Before, MS was continuously losing money on the Xbox1, as well as being too far behind its competition in market share. They had to take drastic steps to turn things around. And turn things around they did, where now they make a profit on every 360 sold, have a much stronger market position against Sony (now only trailing behind Nintendo) as well as continuously getting robust game support with developers.

They simply have NO reason to abandon the 360 like they did with its predecessor, and will have every reason to have overlapping support when the next gen Xbox releases (when ever that is).

You just make flawed assumptions based on past events, where the circumstances behind those events are no longer the same. You simply expect history to repeat itself, yet if that were true, why doesn't PS3 have a 70% market share like its predecessor enjoyed?

360 is broken. I bet the user bases are near identical by now with all of the 360 rebuys people are making.

LOXO7

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. If we were to apply that logic, then the PS2 user base is also only 1/3 of the purported 120+ million, what with the DRE and other issues it had in its day. The only difference being, Sony didn't offer a warranty for broken PS2's, forcing people to either pay the repair cost or just buy a new system. MS on the other hand had a 1 year warranty for the RRoD and then later 3 years for that and E74, the 3 year coverage being retroactive.

So really, which is more likely of sales numbers being padded? PS2 with no coverage by its maker, or 360 with 1 and then 3 year retroactive warranty allowing users FREE repair? ;)

I fail to see why people care about this... Does the enjoyment you get out of your console depend on how many people buy it?

That pic I just have to shake my head to. The disk tray! lol. Comon MS is in last gen with that disk tray.

360 is broken. I bet the user bases are near identical by now with all of the 360 rebuys people are making.

PS2 with no coverage by its maker, or 360 with 1 and then 3 year retroactive warranty allowing users FREE repair? ;)

Suuuuuuuure. Then lets apply this logic as you allready did. That is right! Woot woot GOAL!!!! PS2 has padded sales numbers for two reasons. PS2 life span isn't 9 years(rebuys) and it has been out 9 YEARS. This is typical that PS2 would have that many sales. We shall see when 360 reaches 9 years ( )and see's how many sales it has only when we can compare fairly. Oh wait what does this have anything to do with the 360 v PS3...?

I know, not heard of, Know many people who bought more than one 360. I didn't ask why they did because it would get the sense that I am taunting and I'm a superstitious person, if I pry then I would get the same happen to me. My assumtions are just as good as yours. But one bought the pro and then traded it in for an elite. So that counts for two sales. Am I saying this happend with 5 million people?... YES. With other variations in dealing with failures.

Edit: Oh yes. I thought that Megan Fox comercial was hilarious when it went to "her" hand part. ...her thumbs don't look like that? :D

You are completely missing the point of my post. I was illustrating how ludicrous "theories" of sales padding are when you don't factor in all the circumstances. Like 360 having long time free repair support. You trying to claim 5 million people rebought instead of using a free alternative is nothing short of irrational, and indictive of desparation when you grasp for straws. You don't have a shred of evidence to sopport your claim except maybe a "gut feeling". Problem being that feeling would be slanted by a bias you display with every word of your post.

And speaking of grasping for straws, the disc tray is a "last gen" feature? Really? So somehow, how the disc gets into the machine makes a difference in the complexity of the code data, or how its processed by the CPU and GPU? Last I checked, the only actual qualifiers for next gen from a technical standpoint (keep in mind from a marketing standpoint what ever model replaces its predecessor is the next gen system) is the CPU and GPU architecture. That's after all what runs the games, not the method of inserting the media.
