So I was right... they performe the same in gaming benchmark?

Bebi_vegeta

It depends on the game. Some are 10% faster, some are slower. Most of that is just due to the newness of the operating system. Overall performance when everything is looked at as a whole (application, networking, gaming, etc.) windows7 is much faster.

Well... you said this " It outperforms Vista by a considerable margin ", which isn't true at all...

Well it does, I didn't mean specifically in gaming. But I'm sure it will in gaming as well a couple months from now after all the kinks are worked out in the os and games become more optimised for the platform through patches.

Some application are better, some are worst... it's not like you said " It outperforms Vista by a considerable margin ". If it gets better with tweaks and patches, then i'm all for it... but as it stands now, and if we go by the contexte of this topic, it's not a better gaming OS then Vista.

[QUOTE="Brownesque"]Windows 7 is a failure AS A PC GAMING PLATFORM because it uses a new version of the DirectX API that NO DEVELOPER, read zero, is supporting, and it currently stands at the smallest market share out of the three dominant Windows versions. To take advantage of DirectX11 you need DirectX11 compatible videocards and either Windows Vista or Windows 7. Are you prepared to make that upgrade? I know I'm not. The problem here is that means developers have to code across 3 different operating systems (although Vista and 7 are similar) with 3 different hardware/software feature sets and limitations just to take advantage of Windows 7 when Windows 7 isn't even exhibiting superior game performance in DX9 over XP or Vista. There's no point for consumers and there's no point for developers, it's a self-perpetuating cycle of fail.

FarCry PC uses DX10.1 and NVAPI (with NV's DX10 extensions) features. Note the work balance shift.

LOL

I used to be anti-Linux too. Once you get used to it, it really is a better world.

How does it coop with gaming?

I don't PC game much anymore, but there's always WINE and a few native Linux supporters (Like ID). Regardless, the fact of matter is if you want to game on your PC, you almost have no choice but to have a Windows installation if you want the full PC library available to you.

And that's fine. My original recommendation wasn't directed to you anyway :)

Clearly, if there's a clear reason someone would remain bound to Windows, then by all means they should continue using the software.

W7... I'm still on Vistas, but my laptop is powerless for Crysis graphics :(

Also, the new Mac Ads are very clever. Apple tries to steal consumers when they know they are planning on change. The ads were pretty good, but it's so mean (for lack of a better term).

I gotta say, I love watching them :D Not since Nintendo vs. Sega have I known such a personal war.

If only Playstation vs. 360 was more like that. Then again, we have enough fanboys for that

Official Games for Windows website says absolutely nothing about it.

No info about DirectX 11 games. No info about the gaming advantages of Windows 7. Absolutely nothing about gamers should get interested into getting Windows 7.

I mean, way to go Microsoft. It's no wonder consolites cast the death of the PC platform.

With this kind of support from the company which should be the biggest advocate of the PC platform, I'm really not sure just how bright the future of PC gaming actually is.

IgGy621985
Microsoft is focusing on marketing to the big audience right now, not PC gamers. Developers will support DX11 as it makes sense to - at some point the console market is going to upgrade, at some point DX9-era development will die. - The real push with Windows 7 seems to be to put it on the devices that matter. For example there are tons of cheap Windows 7 netbooks, and starting Sunday Staples has a dual-core, 3gb ram, 250gb hard drive, 6-cell battery, 15.4" widescreen notebook packing Windows 7 for $350. Best Buy already has the single-core version for the same price. - The real "marketing" occurs at Retail still - you have stores like Target, Staples, Walmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, etc and that's where you have to sell your computers to the general public. You can't bet on the PC gamers of the world to provide the migration you need to get business people, students, mainstream users, etc onboard.

Windows 7 is nice, I think that will replace XP in most of PC gaming systems in the next two years, but at the same time I think that the most anticipated PC games has bit relation with W7 and DX 11, since Starcraft II and Diablo III and Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 aren't focused in DX 11 -Blizzard titles will be DX 9-.

[QUOTE="Next-Gen-Tec"]MS tried and failed. Now a decent PC is not getting any more expensive so they would rather people get a 360.

If thats true then why do they keep producing a console with such a high failure rate. Microsoft makes me laugh they make an inferior O.S. and faulty console hardware and yet Bill Gates is the richest man in the world, what the heck does that say about the average consumer ?

I'm not really planning on upgrading to Windows 7 for a while. I know that people have been saying a lot of good things about it, but I can't justify spending so much money for a such a small upgrade. Indeed, people have been saying W7 runs much faster, but I know of many good DYI tweaks for Vista.

Even though DirectX 11 is new, it is also available for Vista. So, really, what are we paying for when we upgrade to Windows 7? A non-annoying UAC? A faster UI? Windows XP mode? Which, by the way, can easily be done with VirtualBox.

I have Windows XP on my gaming PC and I would install vista or Windows 7 on it if I got a copy for free. I'm not one to go out and spend $200 on a new OS. If it ain't broke don't fix it! There's nothing wrong with my copy of Windows XP.

I have Vista on my laptop and it works great. I don't see the need for Windows 7 on either of my computers. Both operating systems allow me to do what I want to do.

The fact that there are zero DX11 games out might be a problem.....

Fizzman

That's because DirectX 11 is brand new and I believe that the only video cards supporting it that are released are the ATi Radeon 5750 and 5770.

dx10 patch for xp and things would have turned out very diffrently for dx10 and since dx11 automatically churns out dx10 code dx11 would have been adopted even faster as u code game in dx11 for vista and win7 and still get a game for the xp users. but as it stands most people still have xp so yeah...

Look at the benchmarks...

Bebi_vegeta

Read the article..the benchmarks are just one page of 5.

Why is it so hard to just look at the benchmark and understand that it's has about the same performance in gaming then vista? Which is the whole point of this topic...

Because it's not? It took them a lot less time to perform all the benchmarks on 7. Just look at the charts, a few slower results doesn't mean the whole os is slower on the whole. It also performed higher in the majority of the gaming benchmarks and all but one of the dx10 benchmarks.

What? Are you looking at the same benchmarks? I'm nothing talking about XP here, but Vista vs Win7...

Oh yes, 1% better for Win7... are you serious, I'll repeat, they perform about the same in gaming performance and not way better like you seem to think...

Alright fine, would it be better if I said windows 7 outperforms vista in gaming by a "small" margin for now? On a different note, 1-2% isnt a bad boost in performance for 30$

.... What games are DX11? And some one has posted benchmarks, Windows 7 at best produces a whooping 3% performance increase or less in most tests so far.. For gaming there is no reason yet to why someone should upgrade from Xp to Windows 7 if its mainly for games.

The only reason I did was for the 64bit support other then that, XP would still be my OS.

Pc gamers and makers need to move on the Linux distros... Ubuntu works faster than windows... out of 2gb of ram it only uses 105mb for OS and all background stuff.. It boots in 2 seconds and has a "REAL 3D DESKTOP" with the cube... you also get unlimited control to tweak every thing and recode what ever you want. Plus the servers are better....We could only dream though, devs aren't going to do that, not with the monopoly in place. :(Midnightshade29
ive been alpha testing Karmic and yes it is faster, better looking (if you care), etc. BUT you still cant plug in a mp3 for example and expect it to work. Karmic by default is butt ugly and basic. Not everyone knows how to spice up ubuntu/linux due to its lengthy, boring process. Linux/Ubuntu needs to make things more simple for the advantage joe, until then, its marketshare will continue to be low.

Well any ATI 5000 series supports it.

The 5800 series doesn't arrive until November 30. Also, DX11 is already been confirmed for a few games, such as STALKER Call of Prypiat, the new Lord of the Rings Online expansion, and Aliens vs Predator. Also, Battleforge already supports DX11. So, DX11 is already becoming what Microsoft hoped DX10 would be.

You will and this thread is kinda pointless. There have been DX 11 games out for months. People here , while browsing through the thread, say otherwise which is false. Windows 7 > Vista and XP. The performance speak for themselves.

.... What games are DX11? And some one has posted benchmarks, Windows 7 at best produces a whooping 3% performance increase or less in most tests so far.. For gaming there is no reason yet to why someone should upgrade from Xp to Windows 7 if its mainly for games.

BattleForge has been out and uses DX11.

And some other games that will support DX11 are DiRT 2, STALKER Call of Prypiat, and Lord of the Rings Online.

That's because DirectX 11 is brand new and I believe that the only video cards supporting it that are released are the ATi Radeon 5750 and 5770.

Phoenix534

Well any ATI 5000 series supports it.

The 5800 series doesn't arrive until November 30. Also, DX11 is already been confirmed for a few games, such as STALKER Call of Prypiat, the new Lord of the Rings Online expansion, and Aliens vs Predator. Also, Battleforge already supports DX11. So, DX11 is already becoming what Microsoft hoped DX10 would be.

Umm what, 5800 series has been out for a little over a month now.

Wow. NewEgg is a little late to the party then. None of the 5800 series cards are avaliable through them yet.

The fact that there are zero DX11 games out might be a problem.....

aaronmullan

I was thinking the same. I don't want to jump straight to Windows 7 when it's just out.

Not only that, but it's brand-new, so there will still be glitches to fix, not to mention the software guys not working for Microsoft will discover Windows 7 exploits before Microsoft does: this actually gets them fixed faster.

It was a bit unnerving to read that something as simple as a buffer overflow could allow someone to take control of your PC.:o

That's one good thing about XP: just about all of those are fixed.

What the heck? I had them notify me when they had some in-stock. I've been checking the site every few hours for the past month.

You can't expect everything to support DX11 rgiht when it comes out. Hell, DX9 didn't have that kind of support.

As I have said. You can't expect DX11 to be incredibley supported on Day 1. Give it some time.
