They seem to be making Windows 8 really cheap. Too be honest what do people hate about Windows 8 so much that isn't about the Metro UI and unconfirmed rumors. It seems metro UI is the only reason most PC users hate it Windows 8 still has a desktop mode so I don't see what's to complain about. I also think Metro UI is great for people using their PCs in their living rooms/home theater setups. I think it also supports Xbox controller support but I think that's only for XBL.

My main interest in Windows 8 is that it seems to have performance boost over Windows 7. One game I noticed had a huge boost according to this benchmark,

shogun-100006885-orig.png

If Rome 2 Total war and other games get significant performance boost like this I'd upgrade to Windows 8 before upgrading to a new GPU.

This article is from oct 4 not sure what build they're using http://www.pcworld.com/article/2011088/pc-gaming-performance-on-windows-8-a-hard-data-analysis.html

I'm just disappointed that there will be no new directX on the launch of Windows 8.

When its been proven that Win8 performs better compared to 7 and doesn't have these unconfirmed limitations then I'll leave 7.

From I've seen its Windows 7 thats been souped up with the horrible Metro UI plastered on the front. But you can remove the UI from what I hear.

You can switch to the traditional desktop. I wouldn't mind the new UI if I can easily access my Videos folder from it. Easily booting up my TV shows would be great.

I'm already using it with no problems and it's the price of console game. You rarely if ever have to look at the metro interface after you boot it and the boot time is super fast. Not really getting the hate for it, but whatever.

I like Windows 8. On desktop and laptop it's bassicaly improved and optimised Windows 7 and on top of that it has whole separate kick-ass touch interface. Seems like for once Microsoft is most forward thinking company around.

Sticking with 7, Win 8 looks like a side-grade, instead of an upgrade...

Oh there are some more graphs in the TC's link. That specific result shown by TC is by far the best win for Windows 8, overall there seems to be a 5-10% improvement at best. 3D Mark Vantage performance, Crysis 2, Dirt 3, these showed Windows 7 to be superior.

Quite interesting thanks Noodle Fighter you jolly good fellow.

it has a desktop but all the important settings are hidden in the metro and to make things worse M$ is blocking every app that allows you to have a start button or to start right away on the desktop. So no matter what you do M$ is forcing you to deal with the metro.

For every task that takes half a second on Windows 7 it takes you like 2 seconds on Win 8. Every time you install a new program you need to keep customizing the main metro window over and over again. Dude, the OS UI is a fk mess and having 2 of them makes it worse. I used Win 8 for almost 3 months and just last month I went back to Windows 7 because even if it appears slower at benchmarks in analog inputs and without having to keep switching between 2 totally different UIs all the time you accomplish tasks on Win 7 much more faster than on Win 8.

I get Win 8 for free because I'm a computer science student but I will skip it and evade it like the plague. It's not worth it so to wait 2 more years for Windows 9 and hope that they come to their senses and if not then I'm jumping ship to MAC because I used Linux Ubuntu and really didn't like it either.

Why? It's amazing even on desktop if you're not experienced with Windows. It's a lot easier to learn than traditional desktop UI. And if you're already know desktop then you're knowledgable enough to remove the metro on your own anyway (altough why..no idea, start menu is much worse than metro start)

This. And it 's had the most stable pre-release versions I've seen from any Windows OS. I have had very little issues with it since I downloaded the developer preview months ago. And the customer preview was even better. It's been the OS for my gaming PC for months now, with virtually no issues as far as gaming goes.

Windows 8 is one of those products that is going to take a while before it catches on. The major complaint is that it's not as easy or intuitive to get to files and such, but in reality it is much quicker using the Metro than using the Start menu once you're used to it. The problem is, Windows has had essentially the same layout for 20+ years, and people don't like change of any kind. Once it's out there for a while and people start buying new PC's with it pre-loaded, the hate will stop.

I'm mainly sore because I just got a Windows 7 PC last year.

Well, hopefully it'll work decently on the games for a good long while before I have to upgrade.

I actually like the Metro user interface, especially considering Microsoft can now have a unified system across all their platforms (Phone, Xbox, Tablet, Computer). I will not however be upgrading to Windows 8 unless numerous trials show that it offers a performance boast in games over Windows 7, I just don't see the need to upgrade when I have neither a Windows Phone, Xbox, or Tablet. In addition I am far more interested in Valve's work to get Steam and the entire Steam Library of games running natively on Ubuntu/Linux. Which if that happens I can almost entirely forget about Windows.

I was gonna use that article but seeing as how its from August it made me think that it's using an older build which may affect performance compared to the oct article.

That price is only if you buy a prefab computer Over the last 6 months I believe. It's $40 if you own any version of windows dating back to xp. Otherwise I think regular price is like $150 or something.

Granted I haven't gone indepth in finding out specifics about the OS. But having just watched surface reactions, no one seems to appreciate the changes and additions W8 is bringing. Game developers are actively opposing it. The most praise I've heard about it is that it still has Windows 7 in it. So you know, why should I be positive, or even care about this thing?

Another thing that makes me apprehensive is the Xbox Music service. Not only is it for Microsoft products only, it's for the most recent Microsoft products only. Software exclusive to the most recent Windows version. No thanks. Getting certification, restrictions, exclusivity, proprietary, synergy closed platform vibes from everything going on with Microsoft nowadays.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro on my laptop and it's been nothing but smooth sailing. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a start menu, but even that's far from a big deal for me.

I know some folks are afraid of change but quite frankly, there's not much to hate about Windows 8 other than the Metro UI, which I don't particularly care for but I don't dislike it either.

I'm sure it works with mouse and keyboard but that doesn't change that it was designed for touchscreens.

Also I don't hate W8, this seems like a great OS if I ever get a tablet. I like the fast boot up times and improved task manager too.

Well of course it's designed for tablets, but not so much that it isn't easily navigable with traditional input methods.

And I wasn't saying you did hate it, just throwing my opinion out there.

This ridiculous UI is the reason why I won't be buying Windows 8.

This is made for a touchscreen, not keyboard and mouse. And since I'm using a keyboard and mouse on my PC I have no use for this.

I use a keyboard and mouse on my laptop and it performs well. If you've got a scroll wheel on your mouse, you're fine. The Metro UI is smooth and easy to navigate with a KB/M.

And if you only want to use the traditional desktop it's only one click away. Click on desktop and boom, you are done. I rarely, if ever use the Metro. although I hear it's rather cool with dual screen setups. (I'll check that out when I switch over my PC in my den)
