Dota 2 is one of the highest rated games of the year so far. CS:GO is the most competitive FPS we've seen in years (released last year). Portal 2 is one of the best games of this generation (released the year before).
But Valve don't make games anymore... Nope :)
most people dont care about Half Life, jsut a really loud internet minority

Yet, original H-L and H-L 2 were the best-selling FPS games on the PC, with millions of sold copies. ;)
I don't know....Maybe to run one of the most successful Digital distribution platforms in the world. They don't NEED to do anything, they do what they want and the most interesting things that they are doing aren't on any console.Â
So you're basically saying, at some point, Valve is gonna abandon console development? For what??? Â

Â
Maybe it's YOU who just doesn't get it. Steam is a huge success and so is Valve. They are releasing PC made games to consoles (ports). So YOU are getting the ports and it has NO impact on the PC side except it gives Valve more money to make QUALITY PC games that will also go to console. Anyone knows the PC version is supremely better of all those games you listed. L4D sucks on consoles and a big reason is that it is made with the PC in mind; including the UI. So they just port over the best they can to make more money to make PC games. It's not that they are abandoning PC by going to the consoles..it is actually the opposite. And if you had a PC and actually used Steam and saw the user statistics you would not be speaking this ignorantly.Â

Steam is only successful in the fact that it hasn't failed... But nowhere near as profitable as the console and mobile market; I don't care if their games are ports or not, I'm just simply pointing out why, companies like Valve see the necessities of console development and gaming;
Â
That statement made absolutly no sense... So you're basically saying, at some point, Valve is gonna abandon console development? For what??? As long as there are consoles and a mobile market, and as long as those markets are making up 40, 50, 60, 70 percent of the gaming market, they won't be abandoning anything; Unless you have a link of Gabe saying anything like that, you should probably just keep that nonsense to yourself... Because it's stupid!
Â
Â
All I see is consolite trash.Â
Then perhaps you might want to invest in a better computer monitor...
They should release a steam box with half life 3 exclusive to steam at launch.sweeten16
Â
I only agree with it being exclusive to Steam.
They don't need to make a console, there's enough high-end PCs out there to warrant making a PC-exclusive shooter.
And the next-gen consoles could just get a tonned-down PC port, like it was supposed to be.
All I see is consolite trash.[QUOTE="clyde46"][QUOTE="MoneySha"]

Listen consolite trash, Steam has revolutionized this industry. Whether you like the model or not, they have provided a service for gamers, developers and publishers. Gamers get great games whenever they want, day or night. Developers and publishers get their content available to a massive audience and are paid for it. The fact that you say Steam is only successful because it hasn't failed is laughable and shows how little you know of this industry. Steam made the DD model what it is today and guess what, the big 3 are following in Valves footsteps.[QUOTE="MoneySha"][QUOTE="clyde46"] All I see is consolite trash. clyde46

Yeah but at the say time they could damage the god like status of the brand if they didn't release something groundbreaking and world class. Wasn't there a rumour away back that they wanted the animations to adjust better to the player's posittion and they waited for tech like that or something.SushigluttonYes, and that was the most stupid rumor ever. The person who said it was a voice actor of a character that died in HL2. And from what he said it was obvious that he had no idea what he's talking about.

[QUOTE="percech"][QUOTE="Consternated"]If you look closer you'll notice that Valve didn't actually make those games. They published them. :) I thought they only published CS:GO outta the three? Dota 2 was a free Warcraft mod and they hired the guys behind it to make the game. Portal was based off Gary's Mod. :)

Sure but they hired the guys that came out with the concept and then made the game. Portal was nothing else but a crude concept before Valve decided to make it a full fledged game.Â

And actually made it. A publisher only gives money to a developer house and manages marketing. Valve hires those guys that came up with a concept and and merges them with the internal teams.Â
Portal was an early concept by 3 people for example. You don't believe the full game, the end product was made of only 3 pople do you? They did the same with L4d, CS and Dota.Â
In 2004 it was much easier to blow the minds of gamers, im not even sure they can out-do titanfall in 2014.

Maybe the next-gen version of Source and "brainstorming" is taking longer than thought.
They could also make a new IP that would be a "spiritual successor".
They also mentioned several times now how they're displeased with today's consumer hardware so that may lead back to point one.

Titanfall? Really?
Of course. Futuristic shooter with mechs and wall running, but still limited to assault rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Evolution, yo!
It's not just about money and the requirements for a half life game is beyond just the story and characters in it. There's the expectation of the game to blow everyone's minds just like the first 2 games did, and its not as achievable as it used to be. That's because you have to take what is already seen in the best games out there today, and then go way beyond that technologically and in design. Valve is a rich company but they don't have that kind of human resources to do that.
Considering they're already bathing in money, and Valve is a privately held company, they don't have to prioritize making an even huger profit.
They'll put focus on HL3 whenever they deem the time right. Hopefully sometime this decade.

They have great ability in seeing potential where no one else does. If it wasn't for them most of these games would just stay in limbo or as mods that would quickly be forgotten. Apart from Dota, that kind of game was already popular when Valve decided to step in.Â
Is kinda funny acussing them on not releasing enough new franchises on this very thread, that is about them not milking more their existing franchises.Â

L4D was based on a CS:S mod, and Portal was based off of Gary's mod. :)Both of the first 2 installment, Half Life 1 & 2, accomplished remarkable achievements during their time. Our standards of what we expect out of a FPS has also changed, so I don't think a mere Half Life expasion to Episode 2 would suffice. In a way, unless Valve think of something truely innovative or amazing, I think we're all setting ourselves up for dissapointment.Â
