The PS3 no where near makes the same amount of money than the 360 does.

The attach rate for games per console sold is 3 to 1 in favor of MS. the average 360 owners purchase 8 games compared to 2.5 for the PS3. This is most likely where the numbers come from along with Live marketplace sales.

Microsoft also make serious money off of XBL and all the micro-transactions. 20+ million subscribers x $50 is already $1 billion. That's not even taking into consideration people buying clothing for their avatars or buying games like Braid or Castle Crashers. If the average is $50 spent per year per subscriber, that could be another $1 billion.

And, as we all know, Microsoft charges way too much for their accessories, which is another great avenue of profit. Probably third to XBL & licensing fees, but every little bit helps.

BURSTIIIFIRE

I love how you pull numbers out of your arse...even if you are trying to make a legimite point. It just shows how completely objective you are...

1) PS3 attach ratio is 6.5 as of April 2009 (before some major PS3 games i.e. UC2, InFamous, etc came out). The 2.5 ratio came straight from 2006 I believe. Don't spin this, just how is the 7.5 ratio for the 360 3 times bigger than the 6.5 for the PS3?

2) The 20 million figure from MS is PR bull. It includes Silver members, who do not pay. Only about half of that is made of Gold members. Of course this is still very significant, and Live's profits completely trumps the PSN revenue almost 6 to 1. But you're still making a outright hyperbole of a lie.

Other than that, I agree with you. I almost felt that this was some sort of troll post if you haven't made your statement at the end.

Also, this projected value thing means very little. The economical analysts has been wrong since the dawn of time (and the right-wrong ratio isn't really impressive IMO.)

ok my bad with the attach ratio thing since I didn't have the updated numbers. But you are wrong about the silver members being half of that 20 mill. Do you seriously mean to tell me that out of 40 mill 360s sold, half of them don't even have silver? 20 mill is a legit number out of 40 mill consoles.

Read my link on the word "half', as of CES 2010, only 20 million 360 owners have a Live account. 50% of them used the apps that are only available to the Gold service. I think every Gold member probably used them. If not, then they shouldn't be above 60-65 % of the total subscribers. Meaning there is probably (this is totally guestimating) 12-13 million at the most of the 20 million Live users.

I'll remind you that the 360 does not lead very well (or not at all) outside the USA and the UK. Many 3rd world countries also almost exclusively play pirated games on their 360s. These machines do not have access to Live once banned. I think 12 million Gold members is very reasonable. (In 2008, it was about 7-8 million I believe)

i dont understand how each console(ps1,ps2,ps3,xbox,xbox360) is its own brand.

i thought there was only one brand of microsoft's consoles - xbox.

and one brand of sony's consoles - playstation.

That is a huge difference lol. I figured the XBOX 360 division would be more profitable than the Playstation 3, but not by this much.

But it actually makes sense. Microsoft did great by making sure the 360 was profitable after 2 years on the market. Plus XBOX Live fees help tremendously. It took 3 1/2 years for the PS3 to become profitable. Now Sony should be making much more money. Good to see them doing well.

The Wii... Oh my goodness, oh my goodness 8).

I wish Microsoft would send a bit of that my way. I'd use it to buy 360 games! Maybe a few Wii games, but mainly 360..

Microsoft could very easily afford to buy Sony anytime they wanted to. They could either just buy the company out right or buy 51% of stock and easily afford either way. They would not do it because why would the largest software company want Sony? Besides for the consoles they have nothing in common and Microsoft is already ahead in the consoles area. Also there are laws to prevent larger company just forcing buying any company they want.

Before trying to debate someone on the topic research the difference between revenue and profit. It seems you are confused on the difference.

You clearly do not have any understanding what both companies are worth and what type of profits Microsoft makes. Why not do some researching on Forbes to find out. Also just last year Microsoft almost bought Yahoo for around $40 billion which is more then the market value of Sony. The deal did not go through but MS had the money clearly to do it.

No they could not simply buy out or forcibly take control over Sony any time they wanted.

Also Sony and MS have many business deals together(ie. Sony Vaio runs windows) Not to mention any companies that Sony or MS may own likely work together as well.

As for this whole topic, Are lemmings now praising MS for milking then for all they're worth? Is it seriously to cool thing to do now? MS is cool cause they took more of my money then Sony, SO THERE! WTF is going through some peoples heads when they say this kinda stuff?

You cant buy a company unless the major investors are willing to sell it. You are making it sound like it's as simple as having enough money and BAM!

And the net worth of the business is not necessarily "the market price of shares x total shares". There's alot more to it, many people value a business much higher than that...

In order to MS to buy Sony they would have to pay the Shareholders enough money that they would be willing to sell. Since we have no idea what that figure is, you cant say that MS could easily do it. If each share was worth $1 market value, that doesn't the shareholders would sell for that much. You have a lot to learn young grasshoppa.

The last paragraph wasn't for you, it was for the lemming who seem to think it's cool to be milked for all they're worth so that MS can post high figures...

As gamers, what we should take from this is that microsoft is overcharging us, and that we get a great value for buying a PS3?

Well, considering all PS3 exlusives are short and linear games which i only rent, i can 100% understand why 360 is 10x times ahead, because i buy almost all 360 exclusives, which are usually huge titles than last months, and not a few hours and can be visitied again and again

the difference makes me want a detailed analysis ...... it's unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sony has been having surges in sales, Hardware and Software, and it's believed now it's profitable from the PS3 ............. if this study was 1 year old, i would belive it ....... but now, i need a detailed explaination.

I think they meant the 360 is only worth 4.5 billion yen while the PS3 is worth 426 million British pounds.

Btw, really... I think this has to do with Microsoft milkage the most. XBL yearly subscription, extremely overpriced accessories, cheaply produced games that sell like they're going out of style(Halo 3/ODST, Gears 2, etc...), gimmicky avatar clothes... etc.

Not only legally could they not do it (you did mention this), but buying SONY, a HUGE conglomerate company as it is, would bankrupt Microsoft....they couldn't easily afford it like you claim....nothings that easy I'm afraid.

But there's also another issue.....Microsoft doesn't have the know how to run Sony.

Microsoft can't even manage run game development studios...how would they run a company that makes MOVIES, TV shows, MUSIC, GAMES, TV's, Clock Radios, etc.

Microsoft would not only just mess it (SONY) up, just like they did with FASA, ENSEMBLE, ACES, RARE and now BUNGIE....they'd hurt and ultimately end up bankrupting themselves trying.

Microsoft is incompetent when it comes to dealing with creative entities.

Lady Gaga and justin beiber make more money per minute than Between the Buried and Me make in a year, but the only winners are the true music fans who dont let the overproduced pop garbage on par with the quality of a pepsi commercial jingle ruin there perception of the amazing quality of real art and talent in music. This same idea can be used to understand how not nintendo, but the true gamers who avoid the Wii like a plague are the real winners.

Well, considering all PS3 exlusives are short and linear games which i only rent, i can 100% understand why 360 is 10x times ahead, because i buy almost all 360 exclusives, which are usually huge titles than last months, and not a few hours and can be visitied again and again

chrion133

OH SNAP SON! thats a good point, theres probably been more well enjoyed hours of gaming just on halo 3 online, than all the PS3 exclusives added together. Thats a strong but true statement. What really matters is how much enjoyable high quality gaming we get for our money.

WOW...I had no idea MS was this successful with the 360. Hasn't the PS3 been doing really well for the past couple of months?

"Millward Brown Optimor, a "global brand strategy" analyst firm, just stepped into a heaping pile of fanboy doodoo with its latest rankings of the 100 most valuable brands in the world, pegging Sony at 94th. Nintendo is 32nd, Microsoft fourth."

That's behind Marlboro (at No. 7) Budweiser (No. 38) and Colgate (No. 47). Considering that Microsoft and Sony make more than games and games consoles, Millward Brown decided to make things worse and break out brand rankings by platform and it doesn't get any better.

Nintendo has the No. 1 and 2 positions with the Wii and DS respectively ($9.9 billion and $7.8 billion "estimated value," respectively), followed by the Xbox 360 ($4.5 billion) and then the PlayStation 3 ($426 million) PSP ($155 million) and PS2 ($49 million).

"The dollar value of each brand in the ranking is the sum of all future earnings that brand is forecast to generate, discounted to a present-day value."

No surpise here. Sony has lost money this gen. Microsoft hasn't.

Did you actually pay attention that the xbox 360's number is 10 times bigger? Does it still not surprise you?

no, am not the 360 is much more recognized today than the PS3, and it's somewhat of an icon. ten years from now people will remember the 360 and the wii not the PS3

If anything the Wii will be remembered the most. But I highly doubt in ten years that the 360 will be remembered more than the PS3.

[QUOTE="SilentlyMad"][QUOTE="glenn2709"] I know you're just joking with that statement of yours, right ? :|

Gambler_3

Microsoft could very easily afford to buy Sony anytime they wanted to. They could either just buy the company out right or buy 51% of stock and easily afford either way. They would not do it because why would the largest software company want Sony? Besides for the consoles they have nothing in common and Microsoft is already ahead in the consoles area. Also there are laws to prevent larger company just forcable buying any company they want.

OMG did I just hear that? Someone TELL ME I DID NOT hear that?:?

This fellow thinks that sony is a small company only protected by law otherwise it could be "forcibly taken over" by the "larger' companies. This is too gud.

you understand that MS is worth in excess of 172 billion dollars, that's more than 3 times the value of SONY, you are talking about a company so powerful that the US gopverment cut it in half under anti monopoly laws, MS has been in the gaming business a hell of a lot longer than SONY, SONY's first games where in 1995, MS where making flight simulators for the PC as early as the 70's, you seem to think SONy where one of the first company's to enter the gaming arena, the truth is that SONY are the Baby company when it comes to gaming, NItendo, MS and even Sega where making games many years before SONy first entered the game in 90's

of course the 360 won't be remembered as well as the Ps3, the Ps3 will be remebered for nearly putting SONY out of the game, and this gen will be remembered as the gen SONY fell from first place to third, and lost most of there market share to a last gen console and an unreliable console, the irony is just too delicious, but that's what happens when you arrogantly bully your way around the industry the way SONY did the last two generations, somebody bigger comes along and stomps your backside, make no mistake, MS are a far bigger company than SONY.

Funny how this thread centers only around the PS3...when Sony has a +150 million consoles all around the world that still sell extremely welleven today and a handheld that's sold 60 million all around the world plus 30 to 40 million PSN users out there (PSP + PS3) constantly gorging anything PSN throws at 'em, and thats not including the revenue/profit Sony makes from software sales or accessories.

Agh, but who uses obvious logic in SW :P
