I'm sure most of you spend more money on McDonalds, cigarettes, and alcohol than $60 a year on xbox live. Don't complain if you get the lesser, "overpriced" subscriptions instead of just getting a year sub. I mean what do you expect a comapany to do about that? I get my money's worth out of xbl. I get hundreds of hours of gameplay playing with some of my friends on xbl that I've known for years.
Yeah and I get the same on PS3 and PC without having to pay to connect online :)I'm sure most of you spend more money on McDonalds, cigarettes, and alcohol than $60 a year on xbox live. Yes, I hate paying for xbl. My best friend has a lauch ps3, with faster psn service and less lag, no ads ever.
What am I paying for then, exactly? More ads?
I still like my xbox and play it almost everyday , but microsoft is really holding themselves back with this, I mean how much money do they need? They should be practically giving us games! Paying for live is major turn off to new console buyers.
Another buddy of mine who did not have a current gen console and was pretty poor, was deciding between xbox and ps3. His cousin ended up getting him an xbox and now he stuck with no live because he can't afford it.

me and my wife pay more for gas for the week than i do for Live for an entire year, so i really can care less. this argument over xbox Live is so stupid. you either pay it, or dont. pretty simple. i have a ps3 and PSN is pretty good for free, but its not Live. you really are paying for a superior service. i dont think anyone with a ps3 can argue that. Live is superior. whether or not you agree to pay for it or not is your decision. as far as advertisments go on xbox live, i can care less. they dont interfere with my experience at all on the 360. you dont have to watch them, and the majority of the time they have something to do with the 360. for crying out loud, you cant even go to a movie without seeing ads play before the movie. but i cant skip those. im forced to watch that crap. at least with Live, i dont have to.
So what's your take on 3dTV? Since I own 1 movie that was 3D that was actually worth see in 3D (Tron:Legacy) I would say 3DTV is a total ripoff....me and my wife pay more for gas for the week than i do for Live for an entire year, so i really can care less. this argument over xbox Live is so stupid. you either pay it, or dont. pretty simple. i have a ps3 and PSN is pretty good for free, but its not Live. you really are paying for a superior service. i dont think anyone with a ps3 can argue that. qFT the only people that constantly complain about the price seem to be Sony fanboys. Seriously, if you don't want to see the ads, you don't go to them, Simple as that. I also pointed out that if you paid for all of the extra online features Sony offers, you would pay more per year then XBL and get less.[QUOTE="bryn8150"]
cant believe you COWS have the gall to climb out from under your rocks and take a shot at XBOX LIVE after the PSN fiasco which comprimised millions of subscribers....i mean the Stones on you guys.
i pay for xbox live because its a far superior service and thats just the end of it. i HAVE A JOB so the 49 bucks a year isnt an inssue to continue palying online in a secure infrastructure.
cant believe we are still having this conversation??
KevinnButlerNPK
The ONLY ripoff I see on live is HuluPlus,
I don't see anyone complaining about the price? I'm not a Sony fanboy neither, but I still haven't, and probably will never pay for XBLA gold.People make such a large deal about LIVE advertisements. I honestly never even notice them - unless I'm specifically looking for them that is. I don't find them anymore intrusive than the ads on Steam or D2D. Wouldn't know how PSN fares because my girlfriend orders all the content on her profile.

The difference between Live and those products is that advertisment is how those products make money. The miniscule price we pay for a newspaper doesn't cover the cost of the copy you hold in your hand, let alone allow them to profit. Magazines are similar, though they are more expensive.
Cable is actually similar to Live in that you pay the owner of the infrastructure, and not the content providers. The difference here is that, in the case of cable, content providers use advertising as their main revenue source, while with Live MS, the inrastructure owner, is also the one profiting from the advertisments.
There are tons of free, ad-supported apps and websites. When you pay, the ads go away. If Live is so ad heavy, that model would be the only way to justify it.

My point is that it's a trivial matter to argue about. $60 dollars for a year is not a lot of money at all when put in perspective. I'd rather pay for xbox live over deal with what is PSN any day, and most people don't have the money to "overpay" for a gaming PC that makes gaming experiences even enjoyable in the first place.
I can't believe we are back at this. Aren't we beating a dead horse here? The bottom line is people pay for it because they want to play online. I pay it because I want to play online as well. Now I understand that there are other services out there that provide a similar service for free, but those other services don't have my friends on there and they aren't my system of choice. I'm not saying I don't like the PC or PS3 because I do. Would I rather not pay to play online? Of course, but thats not the case so I own a 360 it cost to have online so be it. Not a big deal to me. Why must we have a 100 page topic on if it is jusitfiable or not?
Ads being okay just because cable and newspapers have them is a weirs stance to take, considering that neither the Wii or PS3 handles ads like that, they are usually in the store where they are supposed to be.
It really should just boot up straight to the My Xbox section like a gaming console should, the first thing I should see is not an ad about "Xbox Live Gold for 2$, Just for YOU!!" Or an ad about buying a Verizon phone.
How funny is it that the only console that rakes in billions from live fees is the one with ads, you'd think PSN woulld be the one doing crap like this.
I like Xbox Live but at the same time I can see why some people think it's a rip-off. As a gold member I'd be lying to you if I said that paying for subscription fees for Netflix and Hulu plus on top of the annual Live fee is not a big deal. It also doesn't help matters if someone goes into Hulu Plus to look for some of their favorite shows only to see some of their shows labeled "Web-Only". Seriously now....

I don't get why people claim they get their moneys worth in the services provided, you still have to pay for XBLA games and addons and expansions so where does the money go? All i see is MS capitalizing on advertising and then charging you to view these ads, then adding free website access like Twitter and Facebook and calling them features of XBL.JohnF111Enough with advertising its not like its a commercial on tv and you are forced to watch it. There is a channel on xbox live that has advertising on it and it only pops up if you go to it yourself. Sometimes it has some cool stuff worth looking into. People are making too big of a deal of it.

Bringing up newpapers and cable is a perfectly good analog here considering the strengths of the Wii and PS3's online services... Wii online being practically non-existant and non-viable for effective advertising; PSN being, well we've all seen the affects of Sony's lack of investment in the service in areas they should have invested in.
I am cancelling my xbox live account when it expires later this year. I've traded in most of my xbox games. I'm switching completely over to PS3 now, primarily because I don't want to keep paying for xbox live. I also don't like Kinect very much and the idea of interactive ads sounds terrible.
Once Bungie left M$, there wasn't much reason for me to stay. I will probably rent Gears 3 since it comes out during the final month of my membership. That will be swan song to 360.

Where does the money go?
Well, it goes to security for one. Data security for one(hi Sony), but policy enforcement in terms of tools and personnel that have been vocal and accessible to its entire userbase.
There's the community personnel that handle groups like the GamerChix (which my wife and daughter love), not to mention the events like the game-with-devs and community play dates.
Or what about the stuff the end user doesn't necessarily see, but indirectly benefit from... like MS's work with groups like the LBGT community and other minority groups to make sure their concerns are addressed in policy. Or MS's work with parent groups and legislators to stop them from demonizing videogames and online gaming.
Or how about all those videos they put out and stream from the dash?
I know there's plenty more that we're just not privy to, but I'm not going to assume that MS execs are bathing in sold gold bathtubs because of Xbox Live.
