Let me set a precidence here...
Every nextgen gamer makes it a priority have money for their game console. At $60 a game neither system is cheap.
Now lets get down to the niddy griddy.
1. Xbox 360 owners now spend at least $200 for their game console.
2. To get wifi they will spend another $100 for the hardware from microsoft. (note: that is the retail price. you can probably get the component cheaper on ebay but I'd bet that the majority of sales of that compenent are purchased at retail from microsoft) I'm sure there are a few of you out there that don't have the wifi component. That said, I'm sure, if given the choice, all of you would rather have it.
3. How many of you have bought a computer or laptop since you bought your 360? A good laptop of desktop is going to run you about $750. Where am I going with this? Well, if you didn't already know, PS3 owners have the ability to run Ubuntu Linux on their PS3. So long as your not into image software Linux on PS3 will have all the computing power you will need. I currently use open office for all my office needs and firefox for browsing.
4. Now let's talk about the BluRay player. For a decent one your talking another $300. By the way, saying that your not that into bluray's is like saying that you'd rather watch cable tv then HD on a satalite.
5. Xbox live costs $50 a year. Lets say that the 360 some how makes it 10 years. That's another $500. I admit that points one through four can be debatable given that one doesn't NEED wifi, a computer, or a bluray player. That said, you can't get around point number 5. The undisputable truth is that by the time a the next console comes out you will have $700 for your Xbox 360 ALONE! Is a 20GB Xbox 360 worth $700?
360 = $200
Wifi = $100
Computer = $750
BluRay = $300
Live = $500
Total = $1,850
The question people need to be asking themselves is not "is the PS3 worth $440, (add $40 for a wireless keyboard and mouse for Linux)" but "is the 360 worth $1,850?"Let's also note that the standard harddrive the for $400 PS3 is 4 times bigger than the standard hard drive on the $200 Xbox 360.

First off I'd like to say, if you didn't have a computer yet coming into this generation then you're way behind the times, its people like you that keep dial up companies alive and you should feel ashamed of yourself. Also you are complete fool if you think you can use a console in the same manner as a PC, a console will never rival what a PC can do and if you are throwing a PC into this debate you need to throw yourself out of the nearest window.
Wifi has never been needed, I for one have my cable modem on my TV stand and an ethernet cable works just fine, plus its a more stable connection and won't DC me out of no where unless Comcast is being dumb.
You don't need a Bluray player, I have a 52 inch Sharp Aquos LCD HDTV and I get by just fine without Bluray, its even on my list of things to get right now since there aren't even enough movies I think would truly be worth it to own in Bluray. Please stop lumping in something that most out there can't even use because most homes in America don't have an HDTV in them yet and SDTVs are still selling at a decent rate last time I heard. The idea of facting in nongaming items into the cost of a gaming CONSOLE is absurd.
Right now at K-Mart you can buy a 12 month (+1 free month) Xbox Live card for $20, that's right, $20. I bought 2 today and I'm set for the next 3 years and 3 months now (already had a year sub on my account). If you look around and know where to shop, getting a deal on live isn't hard and no its not needed for gaming. I went almost a year without Xbox Live and here's the crazy part, my console and games worked just fine. I didn't have multiplayer but not all of us out there have to have it. In fact some games are pretty much single player driven.
Also in case you completely failed to realize but the standard size for a 360 hard drive is 60 gis, and this is on a console where YOU DON'T HAVE TO INSTALL GAMES. I've been using a 20 gig since it launched and I still have plenty of room left having 1 game installed right now and a few Xbox Live Arcade games as well as alot of DLC for several games (GTA: Lost and Damned, all Halo 3 map packs, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 stuff, Mass Effect, Burnout Paradise City, Fallout 3, Rockband 2, ect).
So come to terms with it, here's the pricing order:
Xbox 360 Arcade - $200
Wii - $250
Xbox 360 Pro (60 gig) - $300
Xbox 360 Elite (120 gig) -$400
PS3 (80 gig) - $400
PS3 (160 gig) - $500
That's it right there, that's it. You spend that much (not including taxes) and you'll have the console and be more than capable of playing games. So get the console you want, buy the games you want, and you can play them to your hearts content. You don't need anything extra to play them, you don't have to have a PC to play a game on the 360, you don't have to have a Bluray player to play any games, you don't have to have Xbox Live to play any games, you don't have to have a Wifi adapter to play any games, you don't have to have an HDMI cord to play any games, you don't have to have over $1,000 to play any games on any console unless you yourself want to go all out and buy all kinds of needless things and waste your own money.
So in short:
PC - Not needed for console gaming (you should already have one in this day and age)
Bluray Player - Not needed for console gaming outside of the PS3
Xbox Live - Not needed for console gaming (unless you want multiplayer)
HDMI cord - Not needed for console gaming
Large capacity hard drive - Not needed for console gaming
Now shut up about this pointless topic and for the love of god argue about something abit more meaningful than facts you are making up as you go along.
