well if they are going to use blu-ray then they will need to pay a licence fee to the blu-ray consortium (though im nto sure if thats for using the tech, or only if they want to use the drive to play movies). i dont think that, legally speaking, sony can actually deny them the rights to use it. as long as MS and ninty pay the necessary fees and the drive meets all necessary blu-ray standards then all would be well. its like MS who cant stop sony from using windows in their PCs as long as sony pays the necessary fees (do remember that although MS and sony are slogging it out in some areas, in others there good business partners).
will they use it? well MS probably will. they will want the 360 to be able to play HD movies so its another tick on the box. the only thing that might stop them is if the download service on live really takes off movie wise. however games will need more storage space next gen so a blu-ray dirve capable of reading multiple layers would probably be up MSs alley.
as for ninty? i havent get a friggin clue to be honest. you kow nintendo, they always do their own thing. i heard that they have invested into R&D in holographic storage so perhaps we will see elements of this research appear on a new disc technology optimized for high speed loading of fragmented. the technology can also hold a crap load of data but i doubt ninty are too concerned about that. or maybe theyll basically make a blu-ray or HD-DVD version of the GC drive. who knows?
