Daniel Ahmad (ZhugeEX), Niko Partners analyst, has reported to absolutely NO one's surprise that Xbox One sales have fallen behind the 360 in the same amount of time. While still ahead of the 360 in the US thanks to holiday spikes, the global picture is a different story.

What does MS do from here? They're looking at two different models of the console currently on the market. The S, the bargain model which is frequently fire sold in the US, and the X, the current $500 premium model. Both are currently being sold at a loss. The Xbox One S is currently selling (and that's without the constant sales) at an MSRP that's below the 360 S when it debuted. Is this sustainable? Is this why there's a new focus on Game Pass?

That already happened in 2016. That's the last time when MS said Xbone is outpacing x360.

We already knew this along time ago when MS refused to release Xbone sales numbers to us. It was quite obvious they had a flop on their hands.

I have no horse in this race but that thread title is BS and misleading....

It fell behind pace in the same amount of time since launch. The 360 did not outsell the x1 in 2017.

"On May 28, 2009, Microsoft announced that sales have surpassed the 30-million unit-mark"

Which means Xbone could be below 30 million, TLHBO.

I think everyone that's not a complete chromosome-deficient moron realizes that the 360 itself didn't outsell Xbox One in the year of our lord 2017 and that the title refers to "launch aligned". Good grief.

Microsoft just needs to keep doing what they are doing with their services and work on their exclusive lineup. I am pretty sure Microsoft understands that they completely fucked up this gen and Sony will remain the king this gen. The funny part is they don't need to compete against Sony to still have a successful product. By the time the Xbox One stops selling it will still crack the top 10 of best selling consoles of all time which isn't bad.

They just need to create ways to make money which they are trying to do. They can build off of this next generation and show gamers that they have changed for the better, which Spencer has been doing since taking over. The X was never a product that was going to give them a huge increase in sales. You don't create a product that focuses on a small niche of gamers and expect it to take over in sales. What they did was create a great product that focuses on the hardcore Xbox fans and it is the most powerful console on the planet today.

They just need to continue building on what they’ve been doing which has been quite good and consumer friendly in my opinion. I really don’t think that Microsoft or anyone else is under the illusion that the Xbox One can “win” this generation, it’s all about repairing the damage and building up goodwill for the next generation.

The fact that Microsoft executives thought people would actually accept DRM, no second-hand game sales and mandatory Kinect makes me wonder how they even got to those positions? Let this be a real lesson to MS that first impression is last impression. When you focus on too much media BS and NOT investing first content exclusive games for your own console, your not gonna last very long. At least Nintendo understand this lesson after there Wii U failure.

Lol... the old adage of cows not liking their console so much, just hating the other is as true as ever it seems.

@BenjaminBanklin: Yeah I was thinking this happened in 2016. There's no way they are reaching 80+ million like the 360... Unless they start making defective units that fail right after the warranty is up lol.

This is System Wars. Do you really want Cows to put on the "Lems made a Playstation thread" defense? You'd kinda lose that bet. In fact, we all would, because System Wars has enough weaksauce canned arguments as it is. Please think of the children.

I really hope they’ve learned their lesson because the release of the S and X makes me think they haven’t. They seem to think the problem with the Xbone is a hardware problem and not a software and messaging problem. If they keep ignoring the main problems with the Xbone they are doomed to repeating the same mistakes again next gen.

According to the link I provided in another response, it has sold over 30 million. Could that be better? Of course - but it's not horrible. Also, the 360 did just fine without international acceptance. So, your argument is a wee bit weak.

You might... but most on here don't give a sh*t. They're just trolls.

And are they not doing better? They're arguably doing better than Sony in every area, except "exclusive" content... which they're working on now. What else can they do to "do better"?

360 sold over 85m

There was no way the Xbox One was going to sell that well given how they screwed up the design and the launch.

This isnt (or shouldnt be) news

Funny part is when the Xbox One/X is done selling it will be in the top 10 of best selling home consoles of all time. Sales are not best but not terrible as people like to portray here. Yes, Sony is kicking ass and no one will catch this this gen, but that is okay. All of the console makers seem to have record breaking sales of some kind this holiday which is awesome for the industry!

It already passed it and chances are it has passed 30 million also. The thing is no one actually knows because Microsoft will not release the numbers. In 2016 it was believed to have sold between 25-30 million according to analyst at that time. The thing is honestly no one will ever know how many it has sold until Microsoft releases that information period.

Chances are it will not, but it will still be one of the top 10 best selling home consoles ever. Sure Microsoft wished it would sell more, hell that is business. They could still make the product a success with the services they offer. Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson from how they started this generation out and Spencer really seems to have them on a better path for success. Will his gambles payoff, only time will tell.

Its not a flop no matter how many times you imply or explicitly make the claim. You and your fellow Sony fannies seem to spend more time talking about the system than the PS4. If its a thread about the PS4, it quickly turns into an Xbox thread. Its truly entertaining. The Xbox has you all mesmerized. Keep it up, we need entertainment that is more interactive than movies. ;)

I actually think is good that Xbox now is offer something different compare to PS4 9with things like game passes and such.) Makes it an easier choice for people rather than the exact HD twins with a few different games.. I still wish MS kept scalebound alive. It would have been the game that push me to by the console like the Bayonetta 2 with the Wii-U. Oh well!

I got a ps4 slim last month, as there were a number of games i wanted and it was within my budget.

In a couple months i’ll be in a position to upgrade into either a ps pro or one x (if they both come down in price a bit)

I was thinking about it and if all things were equal, the x is enticing because of it’s hardware superiority and the fact it would extend my collection outside of sony’s offerings. For a split second, i was thinking “maybe i’ll get the x if the prices are similar by then”

So i started looking into what games i’d get. Lol. I could think of absolutely no reason to justify it.

I’m a very graphically impressed gamer but i honestly think i’d end up getting a switch if i wanted to diversify outside of sony. There is just such lack of content avail around the xbox right now.

With all of that being said, a friend of mine owns an xbox one x, a ps pro and hundreds of games. He told me he rarely plays his PS at this point.

Honestly, i’m a bit confused right now because of that. I just don’t see a need to have both consoles to split content between when there is such a lack of exclusive content for the x.

I think that the one thing MS could do at this point (aside from miraculously pulling dozens of new good games out of their asses) to win me over to their side, would be to start cutting the hell out of their game prices. Until then, an x box is just not in my future. With the types of games i like, it just wouldn’t make sense.

Well you have to buy what makes sense to you and the X simply doesn't. Now if things were pro gamer and less anti gamer you wouldn't have to ponder what games you are missing out on because instead of buying more redundant hardware you just buy the hardware of your liking and simply play the games you want.

@open_lane: This is the same song and dance that also plagued the 360. Basically, if you are an XBox fan, your choices of exclusives are either Halo, Forza, or Gears of War. Microsoft's problem has always been making great exclusive franchises.

With the PS4 we have so much diversity and when you look at those exclusives you can easily see why the number of PS4s sold around the world is basically double to the amount of XBox Ones sold.

We have Bloodborne, the Uncharted franchise, the Last of Us franchise, Horizon Zero Dawn, the God of War franchise, the Killzone franchise, the inFamous franchise, The Gran Turismo franchise, the Until Dawn franchise, and the list goes on and on. I would imagine that a list like that is tough to compete with, but if they announced Knights of the Old Republic 3 or Fable 4 on the Xbox One then I would buy an XBox One X in a heartbeat.

How many did the original Xbox sold? Can the Xbox beat the first Xbox?? I hope so!

The first Xbox sold about 25 million consoles, so Xbox One is beating that, but I have a feeling it will be a similar financial loser in the end. The original Xbox ran about a 5 to 7 billion loss for MS according to the first head of the division, Robbie Bach. Likely because they were selling a console that was a Pentium III machine in a box that they had to drastically discount, and they were probably already taking a loss on that from the get go too.

The One may not lose as much as OG Xbox because Live fills in the hole some, but they've been a lot more aggressive with this box and not coming out ahead and I know that's costing them heavily.

@mecha_frieza: i think the hardest part for me is that i WANT to want an xbox. I want to expand the amount of good gaming experiences i have. Unfortunately, there just doesn’t feel like there’s much i’m missing out on over at the MS camp. I feel like i’m missing out on more by not owning a nintendo system. As far as i see it, xbox should become either a budget based option or they should get some good games, maybe even a mascot. Make it feel like i’m missing out on something. As i said from a hardware perpective they got my attention, just failed to retain it with content.
