Meet The Guy Who Got The Xbox One Early

From the Kotaku article:

"After hooking up the Xbox One and powering it on, Weingarten was prompted to connect to his home Internet, and then set up his Kinect 2.0. There didn't appear to be any way to back out of that. After connecting to the Internet the console began pulling down a 500-megabyte day-one update, which will be necessary to play games."

Since the out-of-box Xbox still has DRM enabled, you must have an internet connection to boot up. Then, you are required to download and install a 500MB update to get rid of it.

May seem trivial to some of us, but a large amount of customers are going to be confused by this.

Won't be able to play games out of the box? Reminds me of this:

This is pretty much the definition of first world problems. If you find this a big problem, you should probably sit down and consider your priorities in life.

Sums it up nicely. You got a day 1 patch with the ps4 as well, or otherwise you are missing out on some features. I'd much rather have everything on day 1. So if that means connecting to the internet, then I'll do it. Simple as that. If you don't have internet or can't afford it and you have a ps4 or xbox one, then something is wrong with that picture.

We have an internet connection to complain about this issue. Chances are will have an internet connection when we're booting up the system.

I don't have a problem with it, but people who don't have an internet connection available to them will buy this, expect to be able to play games on their brand new Xbox, and will be upset.

Do you know if this happens when you don't have an internet connection connected to your X1 on first boot?. Edit: Nvm, reread your OP, but it that is the case they have to add a "requires active internet connection" disclaimer somewhere on the box, by law.

Btw, Rikusaki?.

I agree. If someone doesn't have internet though, for whatever reason be it due to money or just due to moving or something and being without internet for a bit. I'm sure they'll know someone with internet that will let them download the patch and if they find that to be a problem, refer back to my first post. Is it ideal? No, is it a major problem? Also not a problem in the grand scheme of things. There's also the option of just hooking up your phone to your console and buying some data if you're not on a plan. If you can afford a brand new console, you should be able to afford to buy a few hundred Mbs of data.

Both require a day 1 patch. None of the PS4s features will work either without the update.

Research before you make another childish attempt at celebrating "bad news"

Why do you give shit about people who can't ask simple questions when they buy something at the store? If you are dropping 500 bucks on something you should probably have a decent idea of it's capabilities. If not then it's your fault.

@delta3074: you could see it coming a mile away too, unfortunately... The closer the consoles get (they've never been more identical than they are now) the fanboys have to start again the finer (an laughable similar) topics... Here's one...

Did I read that that the ps4 has 2 USB slots and the XBone has 3? Tchbo

funny actually, that someone with access to the internet is bitching about needing access to the internet

internet is pretty much standard utility these days, that's like bitching about the washing machine you bought or a dishwasher or a toilet or shower not working because one doesn't have a water supply

heaven forbid I should need electricity for my TV to work

@navyguy21: PS4 will still be able to play games without the day 1 patch. Xbone is just a brick without its patch. Not the same thing at all unless you lack reading comprehension.

So this is something small.? Wait didn't MS drop the whole 24 hour requirement because people complained that online was need it.? Didn't they drop it because there is a big sector of the xbox 360 user base who doesn't have online.?

Yet the system force you to update online doesn't that just beat all.?

hell they could have pack the firmware upgrade in all games as extra data, like many xbox 360 and PS3 games do,that prom you to upgrade your system before been able to play the game.

How is that small, any one who buys an xbox one and has no online connection has a problem.

Let me guess every one on this world is like you and have internet connection,if this is such a no problem at all why MS dropped 24 hour check ups and online require.?

Not every one has online the xbox 360 is a testament to that 46 million live account with 80 million units sold almost 50/50.

Now this is sad beyond anything the PS4 allow for games to be play without the day 1 update the xbox one doesn't even allow you to set it up,so while you may think it is the same this units are primary games machines so yeah, without online you can still play the PS4 probably until the patch is included software wise by games, but on xbox one you have to mandatory connect you can't even set it up period.

Some angry costumers without internet could take their xbox one back to store after failing to play anything on the console, and those who don't have internet are the least likely to know about the day one online mandatory update by the way.

That sucks pretty damn hard if you don't have internet. I think MS would / should deliver update discs per request to those who don't have internet. That's what Sony is doing right? Or allow them to install the update via USB drive. That way, they'd be able to get it from a friend, relative, or public library.

This news may be old, but the prospect of it all has me scratching my head. To literally not be able to play games? At all? The f*ck. I reckon many people will find a way around it, some may not unfortunately. This goes to show that both Sony and Microsoft have their final hardware ready to ship, though the necessary software for critical OS features were not complete by time of mass production.

They're both really trying to get these consoles out as soon as possible, lol. But video game support not available on launch? Woah. I hope nothing is rushed and we get funky OS errors and bugs.

Totally right. But you're speaking for people here. I'm sure everyone here will be able to get the update (unless they don't have connection the day of launch, possible). That said, there are millions of people who will buy these consoles at launch. I'm betting there may be some of them who don't come to System Wars or even research games online :P. They could be left out.

I think consumers should definitely ask questions when buying expensive hardware. People should know what the deal is with this expensive tech. Though, there has been a standard when acquiring home consoles in the past. The general knowledge by just about everyone is, "I can play games right away when I buy my console". Over the past 20 years that's how it has been and that's how the vast majority of consumers will, and probably should, think.

I agree with your post. I think day one patches are silly irregardless but to have one JUST TO PLAY GAMES is absolutely ludicrous. At the very least Microsoft should have put said patch on all of the launch title discs.

Yeah, it's what I was mostly referring too. I see it as a non-issue.

But yep, you do need a connection for this, and there might be some that won't know. As you said, they should ask. Or maybe the clerk can inform them about it. I don't know through what lengths Microsoft is going to make sure people know. I assume they're not, seeing as how it's just an update, not related to their change in policies.

Pretty much this. Christ, how cheap is a simple DSL connection now? It's dirt cheap. You need a similar day one update to watch movies on PS4. For the few people who do have a Xbone, but no internet, strange as their priorities are, I'm sure that near term Xbone's will ship with this update already on it, and some games could come with the update on the disc. Christ, people who work at our store who are on welfare have at least DSL.

Not a problem for any us here in SystemWars, might be a problem for those without internet in 2013... which... if you can't afford internet in 2013 then you might not want to purchase a next-generation console.

I find it hard to believe that people in this day and age don't realize that most electronic devices that connect to the internet will at some point HAVE to be on the internet. Most mobile games don't work at all if you don't have an internet or cellular connection.

They've had this entire generation to see that this is the direction that things are going in and that the new systems will have even more of a dependence of an internet connection. If you want to play Blu-ray disks on your PS4 guess what? You need to activate it over the internet.

It's just a sign of the times. Tech companies are front loading more and more of their hardware and software with forced internet connectivity..I'm not all that cool with it, but I really don't have any sympathy for people who buy shit without any research. As for the people who live in regions that have crappy internet or none at all, Playing a X1 or PS4 is the least of their electronic issues. What about all of the other shit they can't do?

You guys sure love making big old mountains out of them molehills. I'd imagine if this was the case for PS4 it would be a different story.

No doubt. It would be "seriously, who buys a PS4 and doesn't have internet these days?"; they told you there would be a day one update. Did you think they'd message you and ask are you ready for the update?

I'm kinda thinking the people who don't have a constant internet connection, aren't worried about next gen quite yet. Doesn't the PS4 need a day 1 patch to open up features?

Kinda defeats the purpose of consoles being stand-alone appliances.

Why would I use an Xbox One when it has most of the properties of a PC with none of the advantages?

I'm not understanding who the "market" is for this type of device.
