Yep Microsoft did indeed disclose this months ago nothing new it just got buried in all the DRM backlash and confusion, they always said it would need a day one patch to boot up.
People defending this saying stuff like deal with it are complete anuses. What if Microsoft's servers go down day one? ever thought of that? what if your internet connection goes down?
At least the the PS4 it isn't a requirement to update, and even then you can download the patch to a USB memory stick in advance or from somewhere (torrent, friends house, mobile phone, newsgroups) and patch it, I'm pretty sure with the Xbox One if anything fails you are boned.
I am so tired seeing the amount of ignorance when talking about broadband penetration. So many people like to pretend that it is ubiquitous, when it is not. It has nothing to do with price, you can live just outside a large city and still struggle to even have it offered to you.
Microsoft had to do something like this remember how badly the original XBox was when it came to piracy and modding and also the 360 had that problem too. The PSP was the same so Sony made overpriced vita memory that you were forced to use to help prevent it. You should be happy that this update is the only thing they did to counteract it and it's the year 2013 not 2003.
Sucks for the guys who don't have Internet connections. They can always use someone else Internet to make a complaint or a rant. Launch will be glorious

This. I just dont understand how anyone can STILL defend the practices of MS and the 'bone. How many non gaming forum users will buy the thing expecting to throw a game in and start playing only to be told they cant without a 'net connection, my prediction is there will be ALOT of disappointed gamers over the holiday season until word gets out and people drop the bone en masse.

the below bold....was your first post. That was the issue. You went to extreme measures to damage control xbox on this to the point of posting false information and then had the nerve to bash the person who posted valid information.
You went full ret@rd on that post in foaming at the mouth fanboy mode. Telling the TC to do his research when you actually DON'T have to connect to the internet to play games on the PS4 shows how desperate you were when you made that post...or either you were just ignorant and YOU were the one who needed to do research before calling people out on anything.

funny thing is i think that both consoles had drm enabled and had patches to disable it. either way, if you got a slow internet connection or heaven forbid... dialup... you will spend hours or days downloading updates before being able to play. 500 mb on dialup, fun times.

PS4 is getting a day-one update that will probably be required to play some games online. And given PSN's history on the PS3, expect to wait a lot longer than a boot check on the Xbone.
I install cable and there are a lot of people without internet. Tons of people get tv only and have PS3's and Xbox's. I'm willing to bet a lot of those people will have an Xbox one soon. I can't wait to hear the stories!

People without internet are not technology early adopters. They get gaming consoles when they are 249.99, not when they are 399.99-499.99 US Dollars.
The arguments represented on this thread are some of the worst I've heard in a while. You're complaining about the inability to play something without an internet connection, on the internet. Obviously, this doesn't affect you.
Chances are VERY high that people who are spending 400-500 on a launch console also have internet access. None of you have bitched when you had to activate your iphone to a computer with internet access. The PS4 also requires a day one patch to work properly. And a PC often requires you to download proper drivers the day you assemble it. Most connected devices now days require an initial connection.
But, yes, I know. This is just another reason why you're going to cancel your Xbone preorder and purchase a PS4 and PC (both of which will be connected to the internet at all times)...
You have to look at the big picture. The average consumer, not us. Isn't discussing the potential success of a platform part of what we do here?
Absolutely. But is the Ipad or Iphone not popular because they require an internet connection before you can set it up on Itunes? I honestly don't know any console gamer who doesn't have an internet connection. And I definitely don't know one who's so into gaming that they're going to get a launch console at this price, but don't have an internet connection.
