Man, I remember such a similar event. The year was 2006, and Jack Tretton (then a part of Arrogant Sony) was going on about how the PS3 was a successful launch, and he would pay people if they could find a PS3 at retail. Several pictures later (and a hilarious post on Penny-Arcade) and the amount of egg on Sony's face was embarrassing.
I won't pretend I know anything about the retail side of the biz - not any high enough colleagues to know the going ons at that point. Clearly, something isn't adding up about their claims that they are "sold out at most major retailers", when people are reporting that just isn't true. I see two scenarios going on here with these wide spread reports of being sold out, while pictures are showing up proving otherwise:
Theory A) MS sold over a million, they just produced way more and over saturated their demand with quantity. Depending on how well their production yields actually were, this could be a possibility. Considering they reduced the amount of countries they would ship to from 21 to 13 over the summer, I think that might not actually be the case. It could be they weren't ready to support the online + CSR needed for those territories, but considering all those areas are places the 360 is readily available, I don't see how they don't have a system already in place for them.
Theory B) MS might be doing some magic math involving unfulfilled preorders. Okay, it has been our understanding for awhile that the first batch of pre-orders were going to be 'Day One Editions', while the green boxes are standard. I find it interesting that so many units of Day 1 editions are turning up in these photos, particularly in major metropolitan areas. One thing to note is that it is now past Sunday, and on Sunday most retailers were told to free up their unfulfilled preorder allotments so they could sell to customers and advertise in the Sunday adverts.
Now, this all depends on how many D1E's MS produced for preorders vs. their standard edition, but i'm curious as to why we're see so many of a supposed pre-order sku that we were told was sold out months ago.
The other, and I say most damning thing about something being up with MS' claim really, is that they made their announcement in the early-afternoon (or late, if you're on the East Coast) on friday. There was simply no WAY to know how your retail sales in your biggest market, NA, was doing at that time. Especially if we were seeing reports on friday that there were retail chains that WEREN'T sold out.
Something fishy is up. Nothing fans should worry about of course; If you got an Xbone over the weekend and are enjoying it immensely, I am very happy for you. I can't wait to rock your world in March with the game i'm working on ;)
