just noticed the below article, and was wondering the loss of which brand would be a bigger loss to gamers.

MS freezes hiring at Zune and Xbox group

"Robbie Bach of Microsoft has reportedly sent out at an e-mail which denotes that the Entertainment and Devices section of the company, which includes the Xbox and Zune are no longer hiring.

However, MS seem in denial and say they are optimistic about their growth prospects"

Well, at this point, it would probably be a bigger loss if we lost SONY, as they have so many 1st party studios...it's a tough call. Any loss would blow, though.

Despite my HUGE dissapointment at Sony last 2 attempts of gaming hardware, (PS3,PSP) it would be a much bigger loss for the PlayStation Brand to die out, it's the brand everyone knows and respects.

Despite the recent defection of many former PS2 owners to the Xbox360.

You do know they aren't the only ones making PC games. When was the last time MGS did an only PC game (not just published)?

I would rather have that both joined in partnership to create the one console standard and after that just focused on software.

Though the death of Sony would be a bigger loss to gamers, if you go by what Sony has contributed to the gaming industry.

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH XBOX BRAND. Please fully read before replying. If you still feel it would be most tragic to lose XBOX Brand, then say that, don't let the PC add in comment rule your decision making, as it's part of the XBOX BRAND.

Microsofts role in PC gaming is not as significant as Xbox's, if Microsoft disappeared developers would just start using OpenGL and develop for Mac/Linux/whatever replaced Windows.

Which are these major ports you speak of ?

Mass effect? Gears of war? These are IP's owned by 3rd party studios.

There's hardly any Xbox to PC Ports (Many games like DMC4 would have been on PS3/PC still, which is why there are hardly any), but if that's why you feel that way, as PC gamers would miss out on XBOX PORTS, then say that. If anything, the CONSOLES get more ports from PC though.

That means nothing. Due to the actual crisis, almost every big company has stopped hiring. Banks, petrol companies, etc etc.

No, he's saying THOSE GAMES ARE NOT OWNED BY MICROSOFT, and therefore wouldn't be LOST to gamers.

Because where would PC gaming be today without Xbox's handouts for the past 20+ years:roll: oh wait, PC gaming has survived for decades without Xbox.

If you think we don't have many exclusives; then you need to check one of the many lists out there. Even if the Xbox brand exploded one day; developers won't stop producing cross platform games.

You are really ignorant and egotistical about your platform if you think it is the only thing keeping PC gaming alive.

I think losing Nintendo would suck even more

That would be the end of console gaming I think.

I can't see Microsoft and Sony surviving on their own.

So when a brand dies, so does the people who make the games? Oh...they are still alive? In that case, I couldn't care less.

By spread, i mean it's system and the like. LIVE started on the Xbox, but spread to PCs, for example. PSN has also spread somewhat, but not in the same matter. PSP owners and PS3 owners can't play against eachother.

Oh, so the only aspect you would be worried about is ONLINE. That's fine. You aren't worried about the games, but the connectivity.

Of course i'm worried about the games. But luckily, alot of games are multi-plats. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be a shame if the PS brand went out.

Right, but when it comes down to it, ONLINE is more important than the GAMES you play Online or off, I gotcha. You play a lot of multiplats, and ONLINE is the biggest feature for you. That's fine.

i think the playstation brand because it's been out longer and it has a lot of well known franchises, but then again the death of xbox would hit halo fanatics pretty hard. 3rd party games wouldnt take affect to this...only 1st party games would, and i think the 1st party quality games of sony would be a bigger loss than microsoft game studios.

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH XBOX BRAND. Please fully read before replying. If you still feel it would be most tragic to lose XBOX Brand, then say that, don't let the PC add in comment rule your decision making, as it's part of the XBOX BRAND.

and who are you to dictate what is talked about in this realm of dicussion? no one thats who. As for that its only logical that if Zune and Xbox groups are going under in the realm of Microsoft then isn't something else majorly wrong in microsoft?

as for that I see no problem, so they aren't hireing any more? um maybe cause all positions are filled right now? or are we to believe that any company that stops hireing people is about to die?

P.S: possbly stop using so much bold and caps.

Definitely the PS brand, its probably the most recognised in gaming. Without the PS brand there would only be the XBOX and PC, and they pretty much have the same games anyway. Without the XBOX brand however, you get the best of Microsoft and Sony. Obviously, having all three is better though.

Excellent job not answering the TC's question. Obviously you would say Xbox Brand, so we will all just assume you said that.

The Xbox brand hardly offer any great first party games in my honest opinion so I definitely won't be missing them at all. Playstation on the other hand has such a great first party lineup, well compare to Xbox, that it would be ashamed for it to just go away like that unless they did what Sega did. Anyway this is just theoretically so I don't have to worry about it.:P

Definately the PS brand, it's much more recognized and has a bigger/better history. And because of all of Sony's 1st party developers.

Playstation on the other hand has such a great first party lineup, well compare to Xbox, that it would be ashamed for it to just go away like that unless they did what Sega did. Anyway this is just theoretically so I don't have to worry about it.:P-DarthMaul-

But you would be voting for a slower ONLINE revolution, you realize that, right?

So, effectively you are choosing Games over Online, correct?(I know PS3 is online, but features aren't caught up quite yet to LIVE, and if LIVE isn't there to set the bar, Sony would slow down.)

Not saying that your choice was bad, just asking if you realized you were Choosing Games Over Online.

I think this is a little unrealistic that either would fail as they are both corps back by millions of dollars in revenue from other departments.

But for sake of discussion, probably Sony, especially becuase the PS3 is the leading driver in blu-ray sales.
