You have a PC. Why not upgrade it, instead of buying a console?

The majority of people on this forum are posting on a PC. If so, why not upgrade it, instead of buying a console? I know a lot of people will say "but a gaming PC is too expensive", but that is no longer the case anymore. For only $250 USD (or even less), you can buy an Geforce 8800GT, which can produce graphics that can beat the PS3 and 360. Thats right people, the 8800GT costs the same as a Wii, but beats the graphics of any next-gen console. How can we say that PC gaming is expensive if this is the case? Yeah I know that the graphics card is not the only thing that matters, but apart from that, all you need is 1-2 gigs of RAM along with a mid-range dual core processor in order to compliment a Geforce 8800GT, nothing major. Oh, and don't forget the mouse and keyboard advantage you have over consoles. Not only does PC gaming offer better graphics, better controls, better pricing, but also better online in many situations.

Heres a friendly tip for people who feel that PC gaming is expensive: You don't need to buy a top-of-the-range PC to play Crysis, because this game can have its graphics downscaled to meet your PCs hardware. And guess what? If you play Crysis on "medium low" settings,, the graphics CAN still beat Gears of War on the 360, as well as Uncharted on PS3 :D

As for me, I have been a PC gamer since childhood, but unfortunately I am stuck with a laptop for now, so I cannot upgrade it, although I am saving my money to customise my own desktop for gaming :)

Also, as I said earlier, it's best to have the best of BOTH worlds than just one.

I'd say the reason is because they'd rather buy the console.

I myself would rather upgrade the PC though.

Play a shooting game on a console, then on the PC, and you will never want to touch a gamepad for shooting games again. After playing FarCry on my laptop just 30 minutes ago, I felt so comfortable with the keyboad and mouse. You lose so much accuracy and control with gamepads.

Gamepads are better for racing games, fighting games and Platformers. However, you still can buy a gamepad for your PC if needed :D

Because of these :

Lack of Fighting Games

Lack of Adventure/Platform games

The ability to easily play on my Giant HDTV

My favorite games missing from PC development

The lack of multiplayer without another PC for most games

The Western styled games push, not enough Eastern Developers

That's just a few, there you go.

Lets see. I like to enjoy gaming, eg. playing with mates, playing guitar hero or rockband, playing fun non fps sitting down on a chair with a controller, eg skateboarding, fighting, driving, platforming adverture thingies. trivia and inovative games(like wii)... Playing the best game ever (final fantasy X) imo... To each there own, everyone prefers different types of gamings. Lots of reasons

I was a PC gamer before actually. :| Ever thought that some people may just like consoles more than gaming PC's? and eventhough kb/m are better, gamepads are pretty good actually, I doubt that some of you PC gamers ever tried a gamepad to play a FPS...

PC's are only superior in these 2 genres imo, and only because of the Kb/m.

Because MGS4, FF13, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, GTA4 and host of other games arent coming to the pc. And no a 8800gt isnt going to beat the graphics of a console on all games. Good luck running Assasins Creed or DMC4 as well as a console with that card.

PS3 uses a Geforce 7 series card with 256mb VRAM. I don't see how it beats a Geforce 8800GT with 512mb VRAM.

Nothing better than buying that 8800 gt and finding out that you can't put it in your pc because you don't have pci-express. That's the best part of PC. You can play old games with a new computer but you can't put new parts into an old computer.

I have an upgraded PC, but i don't feel like playing it most of the time. I only play RTS games and sometimes a mmorpg(WOW) on my PC(my dad is hooked into it, so i use his account:D), I also don't like playing FPS games on my PC any more, they make my head spin and after Half-life 2, all of the FPS's are generic and very boring to me, and i have more fun with console fps's. I was a once a hermit, but after a PS 1, console games appealed to me more and i have more fun playing halo 3 on the 360, than crysis(which i can run on mid settings). I felt very bored with far cry, and i think it was the last FPS which i played before i took fps gaming on the console(360). Crysis was good, but SP finishes very quickly and the MP is very boring.

My laptop was cheap and is portable and does a great job for me while I am working.

When I am relaxing and want to play a game I will use one of my consoles. Life is good and I have never had to fiddle with any settings on any of my machines except to turn the sound up or down for years :)

Exclusives are much better on a console. Especially when you consider that most of PC's library is already available to the average forum poster. Upgrading your computer will probably only give you access to 5 or 6 new games that are worth buying.

That's my point. Upgrading your computer to play newest games isn't as easy and cheap as buying 8800 gt and sticking it into your computer. If you know how to post in gamespot forums, it doesn't mean you have a computer good enough for the upgrade or that you would know how to do it. Compared to that, buying a console and sticking the cords to places where they fit is child's play.

Lack of Adventure/Platform gamesSolidTy

Okay, let's get one thing sorted out. Adventure games AREN'T on consoles, at all. What you are referring to is the "action adventure" genre, which is completely different. PC owns the adventure market through and through, and saying "Lack of adventure games" is merely wrong.

When I say adventure I mean games like Myst, Broken Sword, Monkey Island, Zork, Sam and Max - these are adventure games, and there's really nothing on consoles that resembles an adventure game at all.

For a graphics card that powerful most of the users on here would have to buy a new power supply, including me, as well as a few other accesories such as fans and so on. Those add up. And as my current case can't fit a new power supply because of an oddly placed metal bar I would have to buy a new case.

I like my setup as it is. My PC can output to either my 20" monitor or the 32" TV, and the sound outputs to the same speakers. Ironically, it's a lot easier to run games like Crysis when they're at 720P. :( It's also nice to play strategy games like Sins of a Solar Empire while sitting in bed just using the mouse, though the lower resolution sucks at that point.

Cases cost NOTHING you can find them online for as little as $20 NZD which is like $16 USD. Sure that'd likely be a second hand case but its still good.

Oh and even a pretty piss weak PSU will run a single 8800 perfectly fine.

The 8800 GT uses a 65 nanometre manufacturing process, so it is VERY power efficient due to the small size of its transisters. The card is not physically large either. You must be thinking of the 8800 GTX, which uses a 90 nanometre manufacturing process and is thus much larger than the 8800 GT, while giving minor perormance increase.

Upgrading their PC is something every gamer should at least consider, even a small upgrade can open up a huge library of games. Unfortunately if you're behind too much, building a whole new PC is pretty much required.

TAKE. THAT. BACK.

That holds true to the crazy ones who will never touch a console because it isn't elite enough for them. But that over generalization hurts my secular heart like nothing else.

If a hermit looks through the same kaliedoscope that you and your consolite friends use we see almost the same picture... except its one of a crazy communist who denounces something that they can't attain themselves.

I think it's because they have to share their computers with other people. If anyone approaches my PC I hiss and glare, and people go away. So I don't have to play on consoles :) However, I do like to take a break for a bout of Tekken or super smash if any opponents are in the house :D
